The Less Is More Linear Algebra of Vector Spaces and Matrices

The Less Is More Linear Algebra of Vector Spaces and Matrices

Daniela Calvetti; Erkki Somersalo

SOCIETY FOR INDUSTRIAL APPLIED MATHEMATICS,U.S.

nidottu
Designed for a proof-based course on linear algebra, this rigorous and concise textbook intentionally introduces vector spaces, inner products, and vector and matrix norms before Gaussian elimination and eigenvalues so students can quickly discover the singular value decomposition (SVD)—arguably the most enlightening and useful of all matrix factorizations. Gaussian elimination is then introduced after the SVD and the four fundamental subspaces and is presented in the context of vector spaces rather than as a computational recipe. This allows the authors to use linear independence, spanning sets and bases, and the four fundamental subspaces to explain and exploit Gaussian elimination and the LU factorization, as well as the solution of overdetermined linear systems in the least squares sense and eigenvalues and eigenvectors. This unique textbook also includes examples and problems focused on concepts rather than the mechanics of linear algebra. The problems at the end of each chapter and in an associated website encourage readers to explore how to use the notions introduced in the chapter in a variety of ways. Additional problems, quizzes, and exams will be posted on an accompanying website and updated regularly. The Less Is More Linear Algebra of Vector Spaces and Matrices is for students and researchers interested in learning linear algebra who have the mathematical maturity to appreciate abstract concepts that generalize intuitive ideas. The early introduction of the SVD makes the book particularly useful for those interested in using linear algebra in applications such as scientific computing and data science. It is appropriate for a first proof-based course in linear algebra.

Proverbs constitute a rich archive of historical, cultural, and linguistic significance that affect genres and linguistics codes. They circulate through writers, texts, and communities in a process that ultimately results in modifications in their structure and meanings. Hence, context plays a crucial role in defining proverbs as well as in determining their interpretation. Vincenzo Brusantino's Le cento novella (1554), John Florio's Firste Fruites (1578) and Second Frutes (1591), and Pompeo Sarnelli's Posilecheata (1684) offer clear representations of how traditional wisdom and communal knowledge reflect the authors' personal perspectives on society, culture, and literature. The analysis of the three authors' proverbs through comparisons with classical, medieval, and early modern collections of maxims and sententiae provides insights on the fluidity of such expressions, and illustrates the tight relationship between proverbs and sociocultural factors. Brusantino's proverbs introduce ethical interpretations to the one hundred novellas of Boccaccio's The Decameron, which he rewrites in octaves of hendecasyllables. His text appeals to Counter-Reformation society and its demand for a comprehensible and immediately applicable morality. In Florio's two bilingual manuals, proverbs fulfill a need for language education in Elizabethan England through authentic and communicative instruction. Florio manipulates the proverbs' vocabulary and syntax to fit the context of his dialogues, best demonstrating the value of learning Italian in a foreign country. Sarnelli's proverbs exemplify the inherent creative and expressive potentialities of the Neapolitan dialect vis-?á-vis languages with a more robust literary tradition. As moral maxims, ironic assessments, or witty insertions, these proverbs characterize the Neapolitan community in which the fables take place.

Intimate relationships play a central role in women's lives. After all, experiencing a deep bond with a loved one is critical for a woman's sense of identity and emotional well-being. Finding true love, however, has its challenges and adversities. You may, for instance, experience infidelity in your relationship, have a partner who fails to respect your boundaries, or feel deeply sad and lonely in your marriage. You may be a woman whose relationship is crumbling, or is enduring the end of a marriage. You could also be a woman who has a strong desire to marry but can't find your soul mate. In Woman to Woman you will read about women who experienced such challenges, as well as those who were able to find fulfillment in their romantic relationships. In their own words, they talk about marriage, sex, infidelity, divorce, and single life. Entwined within their stories, Dr. Granzotto discusses critical issues that characterize a healthy intimate relationship. In the same way that a woman speaks intimately to another, she provides her expert knowledge and insight that will empower you with a better understanding of yourself and your love life.

How rape has been conceptualized, placed and treated by the various components within international human rights and humanitarian law present both inconsistencies, and in recent times, innovative conclusions. In terms of the former category, inconsistencies, when rape is explicitly mentioned within, for instance, the context of international humanitarian law, it tends to be associated with a woman's honor and not as a crime of violence or it is linked to the protection of women and not with the prohibition of rape. In contrast, the well-established international crime of torture has been conceptualized as a crime of violence and its prohibition is paramount. This book undertakes a political analysis approach to what can happen when rape is subsumed into the international crimes of torture and genocide.

Poems that incorporate multiple voices to embrace fragmentation, discord, and plurality. At a time of simultaneous isolation and interconnection, this book is an inquiry into the edges of the self. Pushing back on capitalist messages of individuality, CHORUS instead seeks the multifaceted self that engages with the radical diversity that characterizes any healthy ecosystem or society. Moving between a remote canyon in New Mexico, the Pacific Northwest, New York City, the virtual world, the past, and the unstable future, the author asks, “Whose afterimage am I?” The sprawling, celebratory, mourning chorus of this book is the sum of many voices; the words of other writers, poets, and artists are interwoven with the author’s words. This is a celebration of language’s capacity to supersede bodily limits, mortality, and existential loneliness. Daniela Naomi Molnar’s chorus encompasses violence, love, empathy, fear, a burning planet, a pandemic, heartbreak, desire, joy, and grief. Rather than seeking resolution, these poems look through the lens of a fragmented self, dwelling in plurality, discord, and harmony. CHORUS is the winner of Omnidawn’s 1st /2nd Book Prize, judged by Kazim Ali.

This book develops findings and methodological work process of approaches and explorations through a 6-axis robotic arm, hybrid representations, and material conceptualizations in Latin America in the research-creation project: Programmed Materialism. This research-creation provides examples of a better understanding of history, architecture, and landscapes by creating architectural artifacts in a journey between the physical and the digital, as the agencies involved in these explorations provide lessons for students of architecture and trigger pedagogical and didactical reflections. This publication focuses on two issues associated with a technological approach and its relationship with research in the architectural discipline. First, the investigation concerns specific technological tools (software and hardware) based on interactions with a 6-axis robotic arm and deepens the scholarly exploration of design strategies that can amplify creative pedagogies for undergraduate architecture students in Latin America. Second, advanced prototyping in a research and creation process allows questioning disciplinary issues through speculative and narrative techniques or conceptualizations of architectural objects (artifacts). In this case, the research-creation objectives become pedagogical objects, examining a disciplinary reinterpretation, or reintegration, with the digital world; likewise, opening contemplation on how learning from specific stylistic or conceptual issues can generate new perspectives and promote new inflections and representations for the design process. At its most ambitious, the discussion is about the past and future of architecture and its encounter with technology, addressing with a sense of urgency the actual local conditions where it operates. This work constitutes a history of the relationships between styles and technology, between objects and artifacts, or in this specific case, hyper-artifacts, by unlocking the material capacities of the objects, establishing new qualities, arrangements, and above all, new responsibilities and interpretations of the cases studied. This research-creation points to new conceptual conclusions.

Vicente Lombardo Toledano was the founder of numerous labour union organisations in Mexico and Latin America between the 1920s and the 1960s. He was not only an organiser but also a broker between the unions, the government, and business leaders—an almost singular figure able to disentangle difficult, seemingly irreconcilable conflicts. He cooperated closely with the governments of Mexico and other Latin American nations and worked with the representatives of the Soviet Union when he considered it useful. This willingness to work across ideological divides meant that he was alternately seen as a government stooge or a communist, even though he was never a member of the Communist Party nor of any Mexican government administration. Daniela Spenser's rousing new biography of Lombardo Toledano is the first to be based on his extensive private papers. In addition to this unprecedented access, Spenser also draws on primary sources from European, Mexican and American archives, and on extensive personal interviews. Her even-keeled portrayal of the man counters both previous hagiographies and vilifications that have come before it.

Featuring full-color photos that capture the true spirit of the trees as well as in-depth descriptions of the characteristic qualities of the tree personality types, Huber’s guide explains how to determine your personal tree of life depending on your date of birth and reveals how this tree stands by your side with its gifts and talents as a faithful friend and companion for a lifetime. The 22 trees of the calendar are Oak, Hazelnut, Rowan, Maple, Walnut, Yew, Chestnut, Ash, Hornbeam, Fig, Birch, Apple, Fir, Elm, Olive, Cypress, Poplar, Cedar, Pine, Willow, Linden, and Beech. Each tree species occurs twice in the annual cycle, except for Oak, Birch, Olive, and Beech, which are specially assigned to the equinoxes and solstices. Each tree description explores the tree’s spiritual meaning, element family, essential qualities, healing effects, gifts and talents, and symbolism. The author also includes an everlasting birthday calendar to record the birthdates of your family and friends, and she looks at the birth trees of several famous people. Showing how each of the 22 trees of the tree horoscope holds great power, Huber explains how your birth tree is the guardian of your individual potential and reveals the abilities and talents available to you in your life. Recognizing and developing the gifts that your birth tree reveals can help you dissolve entrenched habits and patterns, regain inner balance, and activate the full potential of your tree horoscope destiny.
