Monday 23 January 1911 was a typical grey, damp morning and seemed like any other to the passengers who hurried on to the 9.10 train from Treherbert. But approximately forty minutes later the train collided with a stationary mineral train and the scene became one of devastation. The train disaster which occurred on that fateful day in January shocked not only the mining communities of both valleys, but also a large area of the South Wales Coalfield. Many of the passengers from a nearby train offered what assistance they could by helping people from the wrecked coaches and cranes worked all day to clear the wreckage, but twelve people died that day, and many more were injured.
King Lucius of Britain

King Lucius of Britain

David J Knight

While everyone knows the story of King Arthur, few will have heard of King Lucius, a figure who has been consigned to myth and largely forgotten in the annals of British history. Examining the primary sources as well as the archaeological evidence for this second century king, David Knight convincingly refutes the generally accepted view expounded at the beginning of the twentieth century that identifies Lucius as King Abgarus of Edessa. King Lucius of Britain reconstructs the story of this fascinating figure, who applied to the Pope for formal baptism in AD 177, making him the first Christian King in Britain, and traces the history of the story of Lucius, separating the myth from reality and attempting to restore this King to his rightful place in British history.

The smelting of the first iron in Scunthorpe in 1864 from local ironstone resulted in the development of an iron and steel industry and rapid population growth. The town is perhaps best-known for its steel industry but, despite its youth, it has a surprisingly rich and varied past. This fascinating selection of over 220 archive photographs drawn from the archive of North Lincolnshire Museum, the majority of which have never been published before, traces some of the architectural, industrial and social changes which have taken place here over the last century. All aspects of everyday life are also recorded, from shops and businesses, churches and schools, to images of work and leisure, day trips and days of. Life in some of the surrounding villages is also featured, including Burton-upon-Stather, Burringham, Keadby, Messingham, Normanby and Winterton. This volume will appeal to everyone interested in the history of Scunthorpe and the surrounding area.

Much of Roman Chester has been lost through post-Roman dismantling and 'recycling' of building materials, though excavations over recent years have added substantially to our knowledge of the town known as Deva. In this companion volume to Chester: AD 400-1066, David Mason traces the early history of this military stronghold: the construction and early years of the fort, and the development of the garrison town and the surrounding civilian settlement. This is essentially the first study to focus solely on Roman Chester, other than excavation reports, and it represents a well-written informative history of the rise, burgeoning and decline of the Roman town and its inhabitants. In this latest edtion, updated in the light of the many new discoveries made since the first edition appeared in 2001, the author provides a comprehensive account of Roman Chester. The buildings are described in detail and the fascinating everyday lives of these early Cestrians are illustrated by the details provided by tombstones and other objects.
Uniting Africa

Uniting Africa

David J. Francis

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2006

Plagued by bloody wars and armed conflicts, political instability, communal violence and displaced persons, and at the mercy of natural catastrophes such as drought and famine, it is not surprising that the Western press has long dismissed Africa as the 'hopeless continent'. In the face of these challenges, Africa today is faced with a stark choice: either unite or perish. The debate on why and how the continent should unite in terms of co-operative peace, security and development is more urgent than at any other time in Africa's post-colonial history. Moving forward from the failure of the earlier, typically idealistic Africa unity project, David Francis demonstrates how peace and security challenges have created the imperative for change. He argues that a series of regional peace and security systems are emerging, and that states that have participated in practical experiments in regional peacekeeping, peace support operations, conflict stabilization/management and preventive diplomacy are building de facto systems of peace and security that could be institutionalized and extended.
Eucharistic Sacramentality in an Ecumenical Context

Eucharistic Sacramentality in an Ecumenical Context

David J. Kennedy

This book explores the epiclesis or invocation of the Holy Spirit in the Eucharistic Prayer, using the Anglican tradition as an historical model of a communion of churches in conscious theological and liturgical dialogue with Christian antiquity. Incorporating major studies of England, North America and the Indian sub-Continent, the author includes an exposition of Inter-Church ecumenical dialogue and the historic divisions between western and eastern Eucharistic traditions and twentieth-century ecumenical endeavour. This unique study of the relationship between theology and liturgical text, commends a theology and spirituality which celebrates the presence of the Holy Spirit in the Eucharist as present and eschatological gift. It thus sets historic, contemporary and ecumenical divisions in a new theological context.

The first aspect of this guide is a resource that provides a basic understanding of mental health from both psychological and spiritual perspectives. It offers readers a deep understanding of the value of both perspectives and shows how they work together for the care of souls. Also included are guidelines to help the congregational community become a center for wellness. Christian Concepts for Care gives readers a unique understanding of the spiritual basis to mental health and to the development of mental and emotional disorders. The second aspect of this book is a detailed guide of mental and emotional disorders. It offers explanations on how one can work with such disorders in a healing community, on when referrals should be made to professionals, and on how pastors and congregations can work in positive ways to support members during and after treatment. This book equips pastors and congregations to become a part of the member's wellness. While Christian Concepts for Care offers descriptions of mental health issues and disorders, it is not of a textbook on various illnesses and clinical prognoses. Rather, it is a unique resource that shows the spiritual nature of these disorders. As a result, readers gain a new perspective that gives hope and a practical way to apply faith. Christian Concepts for Care engages pastors, parish nurses, and professional church workers who are called upon to offer care and counseling, as well as lay congregational leaders who support the "professional" staff of the congregation. It equips workers (and those preparing to work in these fields) with the tools they need not only to better understand mental and emotional disorders but also to offer effective spiritual care. Features: Provides basic understanding of mental health from both a psychological and spiritual perspective.Gives valuable insight into the development of mental and emotional disorders.Shows how psychology and spiritual perspectives can work together for the care of souls.Supports pastoral care as an essential part of supporting members with mental and emotional disorders.Offers strategies for referral to mental health professionals in the community.Assists pastors and church professionals in understanding the role of pastoral care and congregational support in the care and life of those with mental and emotional disorders.

The myth of Bigfoot has captured the popular imagination since the creature's first public debut in 1958—numerous citations of 'evidence,' newspaper articles, books, hysterical personal accounts, and even Hollywood movies illustrate the American public's enduring romance with the Sasquatch. The scientific community on the whole, however, has stubbornly refused to comment on what it views as a very tall tale, though Bigfoot's existence continues to be hotly argued between proponents of the beast and its skeptics. Now, biological anthropologist and primate physiology specialist David J. Daegling enters the fray to offer both sides of the dispute benefit of objective scientific study. A well-crafted read, Bigfoot Exposed will prove to be as much a model of scientific method for anthropologists and researchers as it is an engaging and persuasive debunking of the myth of Bigfoot.

In Classrooms and Barrooms, David J. Jackson recounts his experiences during a semester-long Fulbright Fellowship in Poland where he taught classes at the university level and learned more about Poland and himself than he expected. From the trepidation associated with learning he was assigned to teach in a city considered by most to be an unpleasant wasteland to meeting American and Polish colleagues for the first time, Jackson's worries vanished as he quickly learned to accept the challenges Poland presented. Halfway through his time in Poland he stumbled into a bar populated with an ever-changing cast of eccentric locals who welcomed him into their world. Each visit led him to another revelation about Polish history and culture. Alternating among hilarious, somber, and uplifting, Jackson's experiences in the classrooms and barrooms of Poland aim both to inform and entertain.

Throughout the early years of the 20th century, Virginia was viewed as a Republican state. Citizens in the Commonwealth had not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964. In 2000, the GOP had just won the governor’s race, held both U.S. Senate seats, and had majorities in both the House of Delegates and the State Senate. By 2020, all of that had been reversed. During that period, Democrats won four of five governors contests, elected two US senators, and voted for Democratic presidential candidates in every year since 2008. In 2019, the House of Delegates, where Republicans maintained a 68-32 supermajority in 2011, flipped to Democratic control. With it, the state became a Democratic trifecta, where the party controlled all of the state’s levers of power. Bellwether tells the story of how this happened from someone who was “in the room at the time.” David Toscano began his service in the House in 2006 and became the Democratic Leader of the body in 2011. He examines the special nature of Virginia politics, the demographic changes that underpin much of its shifting political fortunes, and the policies and personalities at the center of the state’s dynamics for the last two decades.
