A City Divided: Race, Fear and the Law in Police Confrontations
A City Divided tells the story of the case involving 18-year-old Jordan Miles and three Pittsburgh police officers. David Harris, a resident of Pittsburgh and the Sally Ann Semenko Chair at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, describes what happened, explaining how a case that began with a young black man walking around the block in his own neighborhood turned Pittsburgh inside out, resulted in two investigations of the police officers and two federal trials. Harris, who has written, published and conducted research at the intersection of race, criminal justice and the law for almost thirty years, explains not just what happened but why, what the stakes are and, most importantly, what we must do differently to avoid these public safety catastrophes.

Wilderness therapy. What is it? How does it look, and how did it look? Written in a conversational tone, this book recounts a Summer spent in the high desert lands of southern Utah, working for one of the first wilderness therapy programs. Described between the covers are stories that really happened on the trail. Eating bugs. Falling in a cactus patch. Getting lost and digging three feet down for water. Finding petrified dinosaur bones on a mountain named Death Ridge. And building bow drill fires. Yes - the fires This same area that we roamed in, slept in, defecated in, ate in, and grew in, later became the Grand Staircase / Escalante National Monument. Or, at least most of it did. And since then, some it has been 'un-monumentized.'But this isn't about the monument, or the change in the land. It's about a change in heart; the change in the hearts of those who called this land home for 9+ weeks of their life. This is a brief glimpse into the life that we lived, the primitive survival skills we learned, and the civilized relationship skills that we attempted to make into a part of who we were and are. And it's a glimpse into the three-month evolutionary journey that we all found ourselves on. Together Alone. A journey that started then, and continues to this day.The first part of this book details some interesting, fun, and occasionally painful experiences that the 'Abos' (participants) had in the program. Read about a teen killer who was a gentle good person at heart, feasting on sheep, eating ants, and a swollen testicle. The second 'section' of the book recounts some of the successes, and abuses, that have occurred in wilderness therapy programs. There is an abundance of good 'wilderness therapy, ' or 'outdoor behavioral programs, ' now available. Read about some of the major players in these programs, as well as some of the major players in the primitive skills arena. You will also read about the experiences of three individuals who completed a wilderness survival / therapy program in different eras. The most recent account is from a young man who came back less than a year ago. He spent nearly three months in the western desert of Utah, and found this experience to be life-changing. A few years ago there was a student at a college who went on a 'final exam' as part of her college course work. Though brief in her account, the 'flavor' of the experience comes through. Then, back in the 1970's, when BYU and Larry Dean Olsen first started the outdoor survival and primitive skills movement, there were dozens of individuals who went on a 30-day course experience, hiking hundreds of miles. Read the fascinating and fun diary of one of these individuals. He shares his experiences as well as his thoughts in both a fun and insightful read.Though written by a psychotherapist, this isn't a textbook or a book of 'cases.' It's meant to be 'readable, ' and not boring. None of this textbook stuff, with ten-dollar words meant to impress. Rather, it's meant to catch and keep your attention.Lastly, included is a chapter from the book "Ruminations From the Burr Trail." A book detailing a trip along the Burr Trail, by the author with his sons. It sets onto pages the inner dialogue of a trip through this ancient, sacred land. Musings about ranchers, tree huggers, the government, and values are all addressed.Without spending $24,000 tuition to see first-hand what wilderness therapy is all about, buy this book and take a front-row seat and see how one of the earliest wilderness therapy programs operated.

A History of Three-Dimensional Cinema chronicles 3-D cinema as a single, continuous and coherent medium, proceeding from 19th-century experiments in stereoscopic photography and lantern projection (1839–1892) to stereoscopic cinema’s “long novelty period” (1893–1952). It proceeds to examine the first Hollywood boom in anaglyphic stereo (1953–1955), when the mainstream industry produced 69 features in 3-D, mostly action films that could exploit the depth illusion, but also a handful of big-budget films—for example, Kiss Me Kate (George Sidney, 1953) and Dial M for Murder (Alfred Hitchcock, 1954)—until audiences tired of the process; the anaglyphic revival of 1970–1985, when 3-D was sustained as a novelty feature in sensational genres like soft-core pornography and horror; the age of IMAX 3-D (1986–2008); the current era of digital 3-D cinema, which began in 2009 when James Cameron’s Avatar became the highest-grossing feature of all time and the studios once again stampeded into 3-D production; and finally the future promise of Virtual Reality.

At last, a book on therapy which is easy to read and jargon-free, yet manages to convey the richness of the group experience.'- Penelope Campling, British Journal of Psychiatry'It is vitalising reading - and should be on the shelves of any psychotherapy department and of any therapist with an interest in groups.'- Chris Evans, British Journal of Medical Psychology'The purpose of this short, highly readable and extremely informative book is "to provide the reader with a practical insight into the group-analytic method of group therapy". The book achieves this goal through a format that is interactive with the reader.'- Jerome S. Gans, International Journal of Group PsychotherapyA Workbook of Group-Analytic Interventions is designed to complement the academic and experiential training of therapists. Written by experienced practitioners, it gives trainees a practical insight into the ways in which group analysts may tackle difficult situations, allowing them to understand more fully the nature of intervention right from the beginning of their training.Eight situations drawn from real psychotherapy groups are presented in detail so that readers may exercise their own skills in taking decisions and judging appropriate interventions. Each situation is then analysed in depth by one of the authors, who describe and comment on the thinking behind the interventions suggested by a panel of group analysts. The book gives the trainee a wide and informed appreciation of different situations arising in groups and appropriate ways of handling them. It provides an excellent base from which to start to practise.

A mission of consequence: To find a mountain with their name on it. At risk: A part-time father's last chance to be a Dad to his coming-of-age son, their future relationship, and the dignity of fatherhood. In Ascending Namesake Mountain, author David A. McGuire chronicles a pair of father-son road trips, each 4,000 miles. They go for broke to penetrate a primitive and roadless 3,698 square mile designated National Wilderness-by foot and hoof-in the northern Rocky Mountains. This book is part journal of unguided exploration into wild lands populated with lions, wolves, and bears (Oh My ), and part memoir of adventures and calamities on the road, while crossing the trails of the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery of 1803-1806. Along the way they encounter battlegrounds, gold mines, tourist traps, white water, and historical factoids, all while experiencing the grandeur of The Great American Landscape and National Monuments in the West. Ride along while considering compelling, short side-stories of semi-famous, yet influential personalities of the past, judge saints and sinners, notice errors and omissions, rediscover a Code of Honor, and inquire into new possibilities of being a hero in the world of today.

Traditional science holds that everything that exists starts with matter, but this undocumented belief must be false, according to Quantum Mechanics. It has to be QM demonstrates that - There is no such thing as matter or space or time - A conscious observer is a necessary condition for anything to exist. - There is only subjectivity without any objective truth. - The world we experience, therefore, must be an illusion, like a holodeck program or a virtual game. And no one disputes the conclusions of this mysterious science-Quantum Mechanics underlies all of reality. This virtual experience we are having is nevertheless alive and conscious and deliberately makes choices. Life has always been latent in the universe; every species is aware, intelligent, and chooses; and existence-according to spiritual and scientific conclusions alike-is one unified evolving and emerging intelligent being, purposefully partnering with the universe in influencing what it is to become. Sound strange? What is far stranger is the materialist notion that existence burst forth out of absolutely nothing That's why this book "matters." The life we live is not based in some mindless and mechanical machine. The life we live is filled with purpose and meaning, and we humans have work to do to bring our world along. Join in on this astonishing unfolding journey which we participate in fashioning: The Greatest Story Ever Told

What occupation we should pursue, whom we should marry, and how we might best secure our retirement may all be important questions, but the bigger questions are these: Who really am I? What is the purpose of my life? What is the end and goal of my life? The Christian faith draws on the Biblical Word of God to answer these bigger questions. Sin has left us orphaned in the world, but God is the heavenly Father who is seeking to bring us home again. To accomplish this, God sends his eternal Son into the flesh, and Jesus, this Son of God, contends against sin and the curse of death. The holy Son of God bears our sins into his own dying and is raised from the dead as our living Lord. As the Holy Spirit works through the Word of God, he leads us to believe that through Jesus Christ, our Brother, we are restored to the family of God. Now we are able to know that we are God's own dear children. We also have a holy purpose, which is to love and to serve even as Christ has served us. As children of God we also have the blessed inheritance of eternal life in heaven. This is the meaning of our baptism, through which God himself declares us to be his own beloved sons and daughters. With this Gospel truth as his underlying theme, Pastor Atrops provides a basic and introductory understanding of the Christian faith. He integrates these teachings into ten sections. After each discussion, Scripture portions are provided to represent the source for these teachings. He presents the Christian faith from a Lutheran perspective, since he has been trained as a pastor of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. After serving congregations in Idaho, Washington, and California, he is retired and living in Pismo Beach CA. His desire is that those who study these teachings may better know and value their Christian faith or even become the children of God through faith in Christ.
