DIVAN OF SARMAD Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Sarmad (d. 1659) or Hazrat Sarmad Shaheed, whose name 'Sarmad' derives from the Persian word for eternal or everlasting, was a famous and infamous Persian dervish poet of Jewish and Armenian origin. Anabaptist History- Class Notes: Class notes from Dean Taylor's lecture on Anabaptists history, given January-February 2012 at Faith Builders.
Ok.... I really didn't want to publish these class notes. These notes are unedited and pretty raw. I usually put them together a day before the class simply for the purpose of supplementing my lectures. I am sure these notes are full of typos and grammar mistakes. I really do apologies for this. I have included these notes with these lectures simply due to the constant request from people listening to the lectures. This series has been surprisingly popular. Preparing for this class was actually very good for me. I agreed to teach this series during a difficult time in my life. Studying these saints of old helped to solidify my foundations and acted as a guide for future decisions. My class was unexpectedly small. Because of this, and because I had invested so much time into the lectures, I decided to record them so that others could benefit from these messages. And wow, this proved to be truer then I could have imagined. I have received feedback from believers all over the world, from local churches to foreign missionaries. I even received a report from a persecuted Mennonite pastor in Vietnam. He was meeting with a converted kick-boxer from Thailand. They were watching the lectures night after night in their tiny apartment. It has been a blessing to get this kind of feedback. So...if you can forgive the sloppy notes I hope the lecture will be a blessing for you too as you listen. For those more grammatically gifted feel free to make the changes in grammar, format or in citing sources. Any time a significant change to these notes are made I will make the changes and replace the old file with this new one. I will also credit the people at the beginning of these notes. We have tried to stay within copyright law with the understanding that all things contained herein constitute "fair use" for educational purposes. There is enough material here that if it was organized could make a very nice accompaniment to the lectures. Perhaps someone could even end each section with questions and answers. Hey, let's consider the file an "open source document." If significant changes are made I will keep updating the notes and reprint the book. But for now.... I apologies...all you get are these scattered notes. Thanks

In May 1896, residents along the Philadelphia Main Line organized a meeting on the lawn of the Devon Inn inviting friends and neighbors to effect an organization for the purpose of holding a Horse Show at Devon. In the aftermath of World War I, the Devon Horse Show incorporated a country fair in 1919 to support a local charity and selected Bryn Mawr Hospital as its beneficiary. Devon Horse Show and Country Fair follows the organization from its humble beginnings as a one-day show for local breeding farmers in the Philadelphia countryside to its rise as a premier international equestrian event. While it draws top competitors from around the world, the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair remains uniquely rooted in tradition and community. More than 2,500 volunteers return year after year, generation after generation, to ensure its success for the benefit of Bryn Mawr Hospital.

DIVAN OF GHALIB Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Mirza Asadullah Beg (1797-1869}, known as Ghalib (conqueror) was born in the city of Agra of parents with Turkish aristocratic ancestry. When he was only five his father Abdullah Beg Khan died in a battle while working under Rao Raja Bakhtwar Singh of Alwar and his uncle Nasrullah Beg Khan took charge of him. But he lost his uncle also at the age of eight. He then moved to Delhi. He lived on state patronage, credit or the generosity of friends. His fame came to him posthumously. He had remarked during his life that although his age had ignored his greatness he would be recognized by later generations. History has vindicated his claim. Although he wrote many more ghazals, qit'as and ruba'is in Persian he is more famous for those written in Urdu. Before Ghalib, the Urdu ghazal was primarily an expression of anguished love but Ghalib expressed his philosophy and cynicism. In keeping with the conventions of the ghazal, in most of Ghalib's couplets the 'beloved' could be a beautiful woman, boy, monarch or even... God or the Spiritual Master as in his many Sufi poems.
