In this collection of over 1,100 pithy quips, puns, one-liners and zingers, humorist Dwayne James records observations on the wonders and the absurdities of his daily life over the last six years. You'll laugh as you read about the author's efforts to balance a creatively-driven career with the demands of his busy domestic life, puzzle at his clever wordplay, and giggle at his phrase turning. If you're new to the story, let me catch you up on the journey already in progress... I'm Dwayne. I'm an artist and writer, but it wasn't always that way. For many years, I was a single-father for a precocious young girl while I worked from home for a large computer company. Then, things changed. Literally overnight. I met an amazing woman and fell head over toes in love. Long story short: in a matter of a year, we were married and expecting twins, but it's the precise manner in which it happened that continues to boggle the mind. As the story goes (and I am NOT making this up), my wife and I found out that she was pregnant with twins the day after I was laid off from the aforementioned good paying job in January of 2009. The months and years that followed were equal parts challenging and rewarding as I balanced my new role as a stay at home Dad with the excitement of establishing myself as a fledgling artist and all-around creative type. During this dramatic period of my life, one of the things that helped keep me sane was my ability to provide a running commentary on Social Media about the insanity of it all. In 2012, I gathered up all of the posts that I'd made to that point, composed a narrative to link it all together, and self-published it as a book called "Gingers & Wry." In the months and years since G&W came out, my ginger kids have grown quite a bit. The twins have gone to grade school, my daughter has gone to University, and all three continue to delight and amaze me. As for my wife and me, she's well respected at her job, and I've carved out a comfortable niche in the local arts community. Through it all, I've continued to post irreverent commentary about life's wonders and absurdities on Social Media. I'd been toying with the idea of gathering them all together again like I'd done for G&W when a chance encounter with two different friends in the same week, both who told me how much they enjoyed my irreverent comments, and both who said they would make a funny book, gave me the impetus I needed. I immediately sat down and began to put this publication together. This collection differs from G&W in that it doesn't have the running narrative. It focuses primarily on roughly six years' worth of the quips, puns, one-liners, and zingers that I've come to call "amuzings." As an added bonus, I've also included two short-stories that I composed originally for two separate iterations of the CBC Non-Fiction story contest. Although neither one was recognized in their respective contests, "Lies I Told My Father" was later noticed by a producer on Stuart Mclean's "Vinyl Caf " on CBC Radio. She had wanted to include it on a future show as a part of the "Stories from Listeners" segment, but it never happened due to Stuart's untimely death in 2017 (Um. Just to be clear. I did not mean to make it sound like I'm complaining that another person's death was inconvenient for me. That's clear, right?) I'm not convinced that there's a good way to read the content of this book. It's not necessarily designed to be read from start to finish. I've broken it up into sections and sub-sections with the idea that you can flip to any part of the book and read a few pages and walk away amused as well as satisfied that you can do the same thing all over again later. With over 1,100 amuzings and stories to choose from, I'm confident that you'll be hard pressed to repeat yourself anytime soon Happy reading

The first full-length, authoritative, and detailed story of the iconic actor's life to go beyond the Hollywood scandal-sheet reporting of earlier books, this account offers an appreciation for the man and his acting career and the classic films he starred in, painting a portrait of an individual who took great risks in his acting and career. Although Lee Marvin is best known for his icy tough guy roles--such as his chilling titular villain in "The Man""Who Shot Liberty Valance" or the paternal yet brutally realistic platoon leader in "The Big Red One"--very little is known of his personal life; his family background; his experiences in WWII; his relationship with his father, family, friends, wives; and his ongoing battles with alcoholism, rage, and depression, occasioned by his postwar PTSD. Now, after years of researching and compiling interviews with family members, friends, and colleagues; rare photographs; and illustrative material, Hollywood writer Dwayne Epstein provides a full understanding and appreciation of this acting titan's place in the Hollywood pantheon in spite of his very real and human struggles.

Plains Indian ledger art grew out of the Native tradition of recording and chronicling through art important exploits by warriors and chiefs, among them images of war and hunting, that would adorn tipis and animal hides. These were seen as historical markers. But Native life on the Great Plains underwent tremendous change following the American Civil War, when the American conquest of the West was in full gear. In just a few decades, access to the hides of diminishing herds of bison, deer, antelope, and elk became more difficult and eventually impossible with reservation life. Native people creatively turned to the easily available ledger books of settlers, traders, and military men as their new canvases. The ledger art drawings of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are revered today for their depiction of Native life during the difficult transition to life on the reservation. The ledger drawings thus became a singularly important way for Native artists to preserve tribal history and to serve as a new kind of personal socio-political expression. Dwayne Wilcox, who grew up on the Pine Ridge Reservation and is a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation, became interested in ledger art at an early age. He was influenced by the work of Lakota ledger artists such as Amos Bad Heart Bull (1869-1913), but he always sought to defy stereotypical notions of Native life and history and create his own artistic vision. Dwayne eventually focused on humor as his way to comment on the objectification of Native Americans. Skilled as an artist beyond measure, Dwayne’s ledger art drawings win major prizes and are sought by museums and collectors who see in him a true artist. Visual/Language is Dwayne’s first book, and it was created as a collaborative effort with curator Karen Miller Nearburg, who provides an enlightening introduction to his work. This book will surely penetrate the heart and soul and mind of all who read it.

This book is a poetic memoir of the Robert Lewis and Jessie Pearl Cole family. Saint Augustine said that God loves each one of us as though each is the only one to love. My parents never read Augustine's Confessions, but they lived the truth of this faith statement. They daily loved each of their thirteen children as though each was the only one to love. This book is dedicated to them.

This book is dedicated to my good friend, George Wilbur Reid. For the past decade he has sent me inspiring photos taken on his daily walks through beautiful Florida. These dragonfly photos magically flew to Alaska on angel wings, bringing Florida sunshine to Alaska, often on dark snowy days with total darkness. Darkness blooms and sings. Life is more luminous and filled with meaning when dragonfly gems are glimmering. I returned the favor by sending him ekphrastic wonder poems inspired by his art. All the photos are Wilbur's creative work.

We all are the sum of our choices. This book details my choices as well as the hand I was dealt to begin with. Since a small child I always had dreams of being famous through the channels of music but as we all know, you have a better chance finding a needle in a haystack than to make it big in the music business Growing up in Baltimore City is a challenge all by itself and adding a damn near impossible dream to the mix, makes the challenge even greater. This is the story of how a young inner city kid willed his way from the hood to being featured on a platinum selling single, a two million dollar record deal and touring all over the world. There's no road map to superstardom so the path was unpredictable and a lot of times chaotic but the mission was accomplished. Or was it? Loyalty, betrayal, kidnapping & questionable murder mixed with bright lights, money, women, personal relationships, sacrifices, failure & success all are pertinent ingredients in the pot of gumbo I refer to as my life. This is the ugly truth of how I almost became famous.

Clouds can stir the imagination. These puffs of air laced with water crystals take on mysterious colors and shapes. it's no wonder clouds have been given mythological and folkloric qualities by many cultures. In the Bible clouds are symbols of God's presence and guidance. The people were inspired to lift their eyes to heaven and walk in faith. In ancient Greek myth, clouds were seen as a group of young nymphs called Nephelai. These cloud spirits, depicted as beautiful and transparent, spent their days collecting water from the rivers in cloudy pitchers, then floating up to the heavens to pour water down from the sky, nourishing the earth and feeding the streams. Nephelai sailed through the sky in billowing white robes, looking like swans. Hindu tradition reflects the belief that elephants brought the rain, and that clouds themselves were the celestial relatives of the white elephants that roamed the earth. An elephant's body was thought to be representative of a cloud, and they would use their trunks to shower the earth with rain.Native Americans also created myths and folklore around clouds. Some saw clouds as the clothing of the gods of heaven. A god spreading arms would cause the clouds to move across the sky.Even today, cloud myths endure, often associated with honoring the dead. The Pueblo, an agricultural people, believe that the dead become the Cloud People and send them rain, thereby nourishing their land. There's no doubt about it- There's just something about clouds that is utterly magical. And it's not just you and I that have that feeling. It's a universal phenomenon throughout history.
