Elizabeth Meeke’s The Abbey of Clugny
The Abbey of Clugny itself is a formulaic novel, using misattributions of identity, disguises, and alternative identities to make up for an often-lackluster plot. While such a description is hardly a glowing endorsement of the text, one corrective a critical edition of the novel could offer is to provide a character list to help readers track these various character names and identities. The novel centers around a young man alternately known as Alexis de Wielbourg, the Marquis de St. Cernin and Alphonso, who as an infant was mysteriously delivered into the care of the Baron Wielbourg. On the eve of marriage to his adopted sister, the Baron’s niece Alphonsine, Alexis’s supposed father, the Duke de Longueville, discovers he is still living and brings him back to Paris. Over the course of the novel, Alexis’s true parentage is revealed, through a series of coincidental encounters with various parties who slowly unravel the mystery of his birth. In the intervening sections of the narrative, Alexis and his compatriots visit the eponymous Abbey of Clugny, located just outside of Souvigny, which is supposedly haunted by the ghost of its recently-deceased Abbess. Borrowing the popularity of Ann Radcliffe’s “explained supernatural,” the ghosts that appear in the novel are almost immediately revealed to the reader as fraudulent, suggesting Meeke’s discomfort with the idea of true belief in ghosts. The narrator’s attitude toward religion—particularly Catholicism—and French politics and culture more broadly are ambivalent and complex throughout the text. The critical introduction will offer some context based on what is known about Meeke’s travels in France to help situate the reader within the text.

In the first book-length treatment of Elizabeth von Arnim's fiction, Isobel Maddison examines her work in its historical and intellectual contexts, demonstrating that von Arnim's fine comic writing and complex and compelling narrative style reward close analysis. Organised chronologically and thematically, Maddison's book is informed by unpublished material from the British and Huntington Libraries, including correspondence between von Arnim, her publishers and prominent contemporaries such as H.G. Wells, Bertrand Russell and her cousin Katherine Mansfield -- whose early modernist prose is seen as indebted to von Arnim's earlier literary influence. Maddison's exploration of the novelist's critical reception is situated within recent discussions of the ’middlebrow’ and establishes von Arnim as a serious author among her intellectual milieu, countering the misinformed belief that the author of such novels as Elizabeth and Her German Garden, The Caravaners, The Pastor's Wife and Vera wrote light-hearted fiction removed from gritty reality. On the contrary, various strands of socialist thought and von Arnim's wider political beliefs establish her as a significant author of British anti-invasion literature while weighty social issues underpin much of her later writing.

On the centenary of her birth, The Essential Elizabeth is a delightful, intimate new portrait of the late Queen from bestselling biographer and royal commentator Robert Hardman, which is full of fresh details about this extraordinary woman. As daughter, wife, mother and Sovereign, Elizabeth II lived fascinating parallel lives, both in private and in public. But she remained something of a mystery – beloved, even revered, modest yet daunting, naturally shy but globally recognizable, inscrutable and also authentic. She was grand but so familiar that we felt we knew her. Yet we would always be left asking the same question: ‘What’s she really like?’ No one has written more authoritatively on Elizabeth II than Robert Hardman. Who better to answer that question? The only biographer to have interviewed all the senior members of the Royal Family, some of them several times, Hardman has crafted a gripping story of drama, devotion, triumph, tragedy, humour and conflict; of an outwardly stoical, inwardly complex woman whose love of family, love of country and duty to the Crown might pull her in different directions but never derailed her; a global stateswoman who wielded her great authority with charm and understatement. Authoritative, poignant and gloriously entertaining, The Essential Elizabeth will explain why she was not merely the most famous woman in the world. She was one of history’s all-time greats.

'A riveting take on an extraordinary relationship' - Richard Eden, Daily Mail'A fresh and original approach' - Hugo Vickers, Royal BiographerShe was 'sugar pink' innocence; he was a handsome war hero. Both had royal blood coursing through their veins. The marriage of Britain's Princess Elizabeth to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten in November 1947 is remembered as the beginning of an extraordinary, lifelong union but success was not guaranteed. Elizabeth and Philip: A Story of Young Love, Marriage and Monarchy plunges us back into the 1940s when a teenage princess fell in love with a foreign prince. Cue fears of a flirtatious 'Greek' fortune hunter stealing off with Britain's crown jewel and Philip's supporters scrambling to reframe him as a good fit for the Royal Family. Drawing on original newspaper archives and the opinions of Elizabeth and Philip's contemporaries, historian Dr Tessa Dunlop discovers a post-war world on the cusp of major change. Unprecedented polling on Philip's suitability was a harbinger of pressures to come for a couple whose marriage was branded the ultimate global fairytale. Theirs was a partnership like no other. Six years after Elizabeth promised to be an obedient wife Philip got down on bended knee at the coronation and committed himself as the Queen's 'liege man of life and limb.' Published 75 years after their marriage, this deeply touching history explores the ups and downs, the public appeal and the private tensions that defined an extraordinary relationship. The high stakes involved might have devoured a less committed pair - but Elizabeth and Philip shared a common purpose, one higher even than marriage, with roots much deeper than young love. Happy and Glorious, for better or for worse, how did their union succeed? Monarchy was the magic word.

Victor Kloss’s Elizabeth’s Legacy is the first book in the Royal Institute of Magic series—a thrilling adventure for young readers who love fantastical stories, spellbinding worlds, and unforgettable heroes. Can Ben discover the truth before it’s too late? ______________________________________________ Praise for the Royal Institute of Magic series: ? ? ? ? ? a cross between Harry Potter and Percy Jackson in that the characters are always on the move at a sort of breathless pace. ? ? ? ? ? … you don't have to be a magical creature to use magic. Cool. ? ? ? ? ? Wonderful Read! Not just for kids, adults will enjoy it just as much! ? ? ? ? ? … a great sense of adventure, the story line never lagged, and his characters are well defined. ? ? ? ? ? It's kind of like a steam-punk version of magic… ? ? ? ? ? … original with diverse characters and enough action and mystery to entertain teens to adults. ? ? ? ? ? It is honestly one of the few books that I have enjoyed as much as Harry Potter.
