During the past two decades, virus taxonomy has advanced to the point where most viruses can be classified as belonging to families, genera, or groups of related viruses. Virus classification is primarily based on chem­ ical and physical similarities, such as the size and shape of the virion, the nature of the genomic nucleic acid, the number and function of com­ ponent proteins, the presence of lipids and of additional structural fea­ tures, such as envelopes, and serological interrelationships. The families, genera, or groups of viruses that have been defined on the basis of such criteria by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) will be described in some detail in this catalogue and illustrated by elec­ tron micrographs. In my present attempt to list most if not all well es­ tablished and studied viruses in alphabetical order, I have largely confined myself to identifying them only in such taxonomic terms, generally without quoting specific data reported for individual viruses. If the latter data do not at times agree closely with those given for the taxon or group, it is difficult to decide to what extent this is attributable to misclassi­ fication due to insufficient data and errors in the analytical procedures and descriptions, or to what extent this is an expression of Nature's free­ dom of choice and abhorrence of restrictive classifications.

This first volume in the series on "Comparative Brain Research in Mammals" deals with the brains of Insectivora. The importance of Insectivora lies above all in the fact that, (1) insectivore-like ancestors are regarded as the initial group for the evolution of higher mammals, and (2) the insectivore brains retained many conservative traits, though the animals have adapted to different living environments. Therefore, the study of Insectivora brains enables an insight into the size and composition of the brain structure of earlier ancestors of the higher mammals including primates and humans; in addition, it illumi­ nates the various evolutionary trends which made the successful adaptation to different biotopes possible. The alterations which the brain has experienced in the course of the phylo­ geny and the related adaptive radiation will be examined in the succeeding volumes on the brains of other Eutheria, e.g., bats (Volume 2) and primates (Volume 4). In Volume 3 the brains of marsupials will be compared with those of conservative and evolved Eutheria.

Almost 12 years have passed by since we wrote Chaos and Fractals. At the time we were hoping that our approach of writing a book which would be both accessible without mathematical sophistication and portray these exiting new fields in an authentic manner would find an audience. Now we know it did. We know from many reviews and personal letters that the book is used in a wide range of ways: researchers use it to acquaint themselves, teachers use it in college and university courses, students use it for background reading, and there is also a substantial audience of lay people who just want to know what chaos and fractals are about. Every book that is somewhat technical in nature is likely to have a number of misprints and errors in its first edition. Some of these were caught and brought to our attention by our readers. One of them, Hermann Flaschka, deserves to be thanked in particular for his suggestions and improvements. This second edition has several changes. We have taken out thetwo appendices from the firstedition. At the time of the first edition Yuval Fishers contribution, which we published as an appendix was probably the first complete expository account on fractal image compression. Meanwhile, Yuvals book Fractal Image Compression: Theory and Application appeared and is now the publication to refer to.

Washington Irving remains one of the most recognized American authors of the 19th century, remembered for short stories like Rip van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. He also accomplished other writing feats, including penning George Washington's biography and other life stories. Throughout his life, Irving was at odds with socially-approved ways of "being a man." Irving purportedly saw himself and was seen by others as feminine, shy, and non-confrontational. Likely related to this, he chose to engage with other men's fortunes and adventures by writing, defining his male identity vicariously, through masculine archetypes both fictional and non-fictional. Sitting at the intersection of literary studies and masculinity studies, this reading reconstructs Irving's life-long struggle to somehow win a place among other men. Readers will recognize masculine themes in his tales from the Spanish period, his western adventures, as well as in historical biographies of Columbus, Mahomet, and Washington. The Underground Railroad that was organized to help runaway slaves seek freedom was nothing new to many residents who lived in Ottawa, Illinois in the1850s. Several residents had established shelters for runaway slaves although they faced possible confrontations with slave catchers, law enforcement officers and trials that could lead to imprisonment and forfeiture of private property. The Northern District of the Illinois State Supreme Court became the scene of a hearing of a runaway slave Jim Gray who had been arrested in Union County in southern Illinois. The state court ruled that Gray was free of any state charges but he would have to be remanded to the U.S. Commissioner in Springfield who would have to hold a trial for Gray because of the federal fugitive slave law and would probably have to return Gray to his master in Missouri. Several citizens in Ottawa orchestrated a daring plan to free Gray while he was in the LaSalle County Court house and connect him with a nearby Underground Railroad network that would get him to Chicago and on north by ship to Canada. Several prominent citizens who participated in the escape plan were arrested and charged with violation of the federal fugitive slave law and were taken to Chicago to stand trial in federal court. The outcome of this trial surprised the defendants and shocked those who opposed the abolitionists and supported states' rights that guaranteed slavery.
