This book promotes process design strategies and methods to chemical engineering students and encourages experienced engineers to reflect on - and perhaps challenge - their daily approach to process design.The production facilities and supply chains of the chemical industry represent complex, global systems built on sophisticated technological processes. While process design of the past could rely on steadily growing economies creating a predictable framework of product demand, raw material availability, and technological progress, today global competition, shorter product cycles, unreliable raw material supplies, and emerging, disruptive technologies create new challenges to the design of efficient, flexible, and sustainable processes. A holistic design methodology has to take care of these challenges.Process design can build on many excellent chemical engineering textbooks focusing on unit operations, process intensification, or process integration. Only a few books address the creative step finding an initial process structure. Process design mehodologies constitute the main topic of this book. A special focus is given to the search for an optimal process structure (process synthesis), since an inferior process structure cannot be "upgraded" into an optimal process during later extensive optimization of process parameters regardless of the effort. The design methodology illustrated in the textbook first outlines alternate strategies to find an initial process structure (hierarchical approach or superstructure concepts with heuristic rules or mixed integer non-linear programming). The role of design targets to guide a process designer is shown for energy integration and capital investment.In a next design step, process intensification and integration are used to improve the initial process structure with respect to unit operation efficiencies (heating, cooling, and mixing) and process synergies (heat-power integration, reaction distillation, dividing wall column, etc.) resulting in superior processes. The last step of the process design methodology introduces the concept of "no-regret"- solutions. These "no-regret"-solutions aim at process designs offering a robust performance in different, future scenarios (fluctuating or unexpected product demand). Modular designs offer a powerful tool to esatablish highly flexible, chemical processes.The design methodology is demonstrated in a comprehensive design case dealing with 6 chemical processes integrated into a production site. The design procedure to derive process and plant structures is illustrated in a step by step approach.To a large extend, this book on process design builds on experiences of the author at Bayer Technology Services. The book includes the input of many Bayer people - technical contributions, exciting suggestions, and enlightening discussions. The book summarizes courses on "Process Intensification" and "Process Design" given by the author at the Technical University Dresden (TU Dresden - 2008), East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST Shanghai - 2012-2014) and Ruhr University Bochum (RUB - 2014-2015).

This book pioneers a nonlinear Fredholm theory in a general class of spaces called polyfolds. The theory generalizes certain aspects of nonlinear analysis and differential geometry, and combines them with a pinch of category theory to incorporate local symmetries. On the differential geometrical side, the book introduces a large class of `smooth’ spaces and bundles which can have locally varying dimensions (finite or infinite-dimensional). These bundles come with an important class of sections, which display properties reminiscent of classical nonlinear Fredholm theory and allow for implicit function theorems. Within this nonlinear analysis framework, a versatile transversality and perturbation theory is developed to also cover equivariant settings. The theory presented in this book was initiated by the authors between 2007-2010, motivated by nonlinear moduli problems in symplectic geometry. Such problems are usually described locally as nonlinear elliptic systems, and they haveto be studied up to a notion of isomorphism. This introduces symmetries, since such a system can be isomorphic to itself in different ways. Bubbling-off phenomena are common and have to be completely understood to produce algebraic invariants. This requires a transversality theory for bubbling-off phenomena in the presence of symmetries. Very often, even in concrete applications, geometric perturbations are not general enough to achieve transversality, and abstract perturbations have to be considered. The theory is already being successfully applied to its intended applications in symplectic geometry, and should find applications to many other areas where partial differential equations, geometry and functional analysis meet. Written by its originators, Polyfold and Fredholm Theory is an authoritative and comprehensive treatise of polyfold theory. It will prove invaluable for researchers studying nonlinear elliptic problems arising in geometric contexts.

This book describes our current understanding of the navigation of birds, their methods, capabilities, and achievements. Our knowledge of this field has progressed immensely in the last fifty years, due to the availability of miniaturized tracking and positioning devices, which now allow us to know when and where a specific bird is located and where it is flying. The book is written for a general readership and requires no more of the reader than a true interest in the topic. The text provides accessible overview of the relevant geographic and geophysical basics (latitudes and longitudes, geomagnetism) and of the neural faculties that allow birds to identify these features. The author surveys a variety of striking avian achievements, ranging from trans-ocean and pole-to-pole flights to circumnavigations of the earth. Readers will also learn how the required knowledge is provided and passed on to future generations, through instinct as well as through experience. Our understanding of such information transfer is today much deeper than it was fifty years ago. Nevertheless, many open questions remain. How an albatross leaving the coast of Brazil can find the way to its nest on a rock off the coast of New Zealand—this is a question still waiting to be answered. The discoveries of the last decades have opened new perspectives for the old field of Hamiltonian systems and led to the creation of a new field: symplectic topology. Surprising rigidity phenomena demonstrate that the nature of symplectic mappings is very different from that of volume preserving mappings. This raises new questions, many of them still unanswered. On the other hand, analysis of an old variational principle in classical mechanics has established global periodic phenomena in Hamiltonian systems. As it turns out, these seemingly different phenomena are mysteriously related. One of the links is a class of symplectic invariants, called symplectic capacities. These invariants are the main theme of this book, which includes such topics as basic symplectic geometry, symplectic capacities and rigidity, periodic orbits for Hamiltonian systems and the action principle, a bi-invariant metric on the symplectic diffeomorphism group and its geometry, symplectic fixed point theory, the Arnold conjectures and first order elliptic systems, and finally a survey on Floer homology and symplectic homology. These invariants are the main theme of this book which grew out of lectures given by the authors at Rutgers University, the RUB Bochum and at the ETH Zurich (1991) and also at the Borel Seminar in Bern 1992. Since the lectures did not require any previous knowledge, only a few and rather elementary topics were selected and proved in detail. Moreover, our se lection has been prompted by a single principle: the action principle of mechanics. The action functional for loops in the phase space, given by 1 Fh) = J pdq -J H(t, 'Y(t)) dt , 'Y 0 differs from the old Hamiltonian principle in the configuration space defined by a Lagrangian. The critical points of F are those loops 'Y which solve the Hamiltonian equations associated with the Hamiltonian H and hence are the periodic orbits.
Seit dem Beginn der Arbeiten zur ersten Auflage dieses Wörterbuchs sind mehr als 25 Jahre vergangen. Mein damals gehegter Wunsch, daß mit diesem Werk der botanischen Forschung und Praxis ein zuverlässigeres Mittel zur schnellen Orientierung über Etymologie, Geschichte und Aussprache der botanischen Namen in die Hand gegeben werden könnte, ist über Erwarten in Erfüllung gegangen, wie die zahlreichen Zuschriften und Rezensionen gezeigt haben. Auf der anderen Seite sind aber im vergangenen Vierteljahrhundert gerade auf dem taxonomischen Gebiet Veränderungen in einer Größenordnung von mehreren Tausenden eingetreten, die allein schon deswegen eine Neubearbeitung dieses Buches erforderlich machten. Es genügt hierfür, die von mir damals benutzte 9. Aufl. des ZANDER von 1964 mit der aktuellen 14. Aufl. von 1993 zu vergleichen, die insgesamt 27 308 Namen, darunter aber 8209 Synonyme, umfaßt. Es war also zunächst angebracht, das taxonomische Material zu aktualisieren und die Synonyme bis auf wenige, in der Forschung noch diskutierte (z. B. Pritzelago = Hutchinsia) oder aus Gewohnheit beibehaltene Relikte (z. B. Ophrys fuciflora statt regelhaftem Ophrys holoserica) zu eliminieren. Zugleich habe ich die Mate rialgrundlage durch die massenhafte Neuaufnahme von Gattungen und Arten der Bakterien, Algen, Flechten, Moose und Farne, aber auch der Gymnospermen und Angiospermen, erheblich erweitert. Aus konventionellen Gründen sind auch die mykologischen Taxa weiterhin in diesem Buch vertreten, selbst wenn nach neueren Erkenntnissen die Pilze nicht mehr dem Pflanzenreich zugeordnet werden können. Auf dieser Grundlage bietet das Wörterbuch jetzt mehr als 35 000 Taxa, die einer etymo logischen Prüfung zu unterziehen waren.
