Martin Luther King’s policy of non-violent protest in the struggle for civil rights in the United States during the second half of the twentieth century led to fundamental shifts in American government policy relating to segregation, and a cultural shift in the treatment of African Americans. King’s 1964 book Why We Can’t Wait creates strong, well-structured arguments as to why he and his followers chose to wage a nonviolent struggle in the fight to advance freedom and equality for black people following ‘three hundred years of humiliation, abuse, and deprivation.’ The author highlights a number of reasons why African Americans must demand their civil rights, including frustration at the lack of political will to tackle racism and inequality. Freedoms gained by African nations after years of colonial rule, as well as the US trumpeting its own values of freedom and equality in an ideological war with the Soviet Union, also played their part. King dealt with the counter-argument that civil rights for blacks would be detrimental to whites in America by explaining that racism is a disease that deeply penetrates both the white and the black psyche. His reasoning dictated that the brave act of nonviolent mass protest would provoke the kind of thinking that would eventually eliminate racism, and give birth to equality for all of ‘God’s children.’

The mid-fifties were a challenging time for all African Americans. Especially in the Jim Crow South where author Thomas Mann, Jr. grew up. Even though slavery had been abolished with the 13th Amendment on December 6th, 1895, blacks were still enslaved in other ways-such as the unspoken rules his grandmother reminded him of before he was allowed to venture out into his segregated community. The author writes, "The tension created by the oppressor and the oppressed was so tight, at times, I felt it would snap. My family and I tried not to disobey these rules, because we knew that you could be beaten up, jailed, spat upon, or hanged with just one wrong move that defied the unspoken code of deference to the white man."In The Call to Serve, the author reveals what it was like to grow up during this oppressive time in our nation's history and how he chose to rise above this oppression by earning a law degree and serving as a state senator and civil rights attorney. In the pages of his book, he shares the struggles and successes of a decorated career that spanned more than four decades.

THE COLLECTED WRITINGS OF LEON SNOW JR.Ever so often a book comes along that rings true as a bell, this is that book. A mixture of universally themed poetry and timely articles that speak to the current state of this nation as well as it's convoluted and often distorted history. Over the years we've had quite a number of books focused on giving a comprehensive analogy of social justice, and man's inhumanity to his fellow man. However, only a few of these works possess the desired realness which is the truth needed to make the work authentic."THE COLLECTED WRITINGS OF LEON SNOW JR." is a perfect example of that authenticity. This is seen in the perfect illustrations of the hurdles blacks in this country have to navigate on a regular basis and their contribution to making it what it is today. The book is well-crafted and well-researched, making it undoubtedly convincing and expressive. It is phenomenal how visible and true-to-life his writings become. One other remarkable thing about this work is the fusion of an autobiographical touch, making it intellectually invigorating and highly original. The book has great pace and depth, plus a concise pattern that makes it appealing, easy to read and digest. It is hopeful that with all that this book contains, it will help give us all a better perception of who we are, and the roles expected of us.
