Philip of Spain, King of England

Philip of Spain, King of England

The Spanish Armada conjures up images of age-old rivalries, bravery and treachery. However the same Spanish monarch who sent the Armada to invade England in 1588 was, just a few years previously, the King of England and husband of Mary Tudor. This important new book sheds new light on Philip II of Spain, England's forgotten sovereign. Previous accounts of Mary's brief reign have focused on the martyrdom of Protestant dissenters, the loss of English territory, as well as Mary's infamous personality, meaning that her husband Philip has remained in the shadows. In this book, Harry Kelsey uncovers Philip's life - from his childhood and education in Spain, to his marriage to Mary and the political manoeuvrings involved in the marriage contract, to the tumultuous aftermath of Mary's death which ultimately led to hostile relations between Queen Elizabeth and Philip, culminating in the Armada. Focusing especially on the period of Philip's marriage to Mary, Kelsey shows that Philip was, in fact, an active King of England and took a keen interest in the rule of his wife's kingdom. Casting fresh light on both Mary and Philip, as well as European history more generally, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in the Tudor era.
Down (But Not Out) in Beijing and Shanghai
I have for many years, like many people, harboured the ambition to write a book. For me the glass is always half full and with the experiences I have been through I finally plucked up the courage to put pen to paper. This book was written partly out of the desire to share these experiences and partly to bring a smile to the faces of the readers who may or may not have had similar experiences. It was built around a lessons learnt process of what I describe as a "perfect storm" in terms of what could go wrong when naively getting into something you are just not prepared for. It is far from being aimed at business people as day to day life is relevant to the visitor and the business person alike.Whilst this book is written about experiences in China there is a much deeper message out there of the importance of culture and business naivety and I am sure similar experiences will be relevant for others in any part of the world. China is not a unique place to do business and live, however it does come with cultural differences that many in the West have no ability to comprehend, nor the desire to.I hope you enjoy and finish this book with a smile on your face and for all of you on a long haul flight or journey, hopefully a lot closer to your destination.

Ceremony, community and connection - the poems of Once the Smudge is Lit carry the reader into deeply spiritual elements of Nishnaabe/Ojibwe culture. Co-written by Cole Forrest and Kelsey Borgford, the poetry of Once the Smudge is Lit highlights the Indigenous experience in post-colonial times through explorations of themes ranging from love to community. Bogford's and Forrest's verses seek to open a multidimensional window into the experience of being a contemporary Nishaabe. A profound sense of movement, connection, and continuity is emphasized by Tessa Pizzale's beautifully evocative illustrations, which include a line of smudge smoke that flows from page to page.

Imogen Keegen has never had a happily ever after-in fact, she doesn't think they are possible. Ever since her mother's death seven years ago, Imogen has pulled herself in and out of therapy. When Imogen's new stepsister, Ella Cinder, moves in down the hall, Imogen begins losing grip on the pieces she's been trying to hold together. Now, Imogen must resign herself to be crushed under the ever-increasing weight of her pain, or finally accept the starring role in her own life story. Before the world of Animal Crossing became a pandemic lifeline for millions, the "social sim" communication game Dо̄butsu no Mori, or "Animal Forest," debuted in 2001 on Nintendo 64 in Japan, then once again in 2002 on GameCube to critical and commercial success all over the world. An open-ended casual game ahead of its time, Animal Crossing set the stage for the series's many incarnations to come with its focus on building community and friendship, its in-game currency of Bells, and its village of Animalese-speaking friends like Tom Nook, K.K. Slider, and the mean Mr. Resetti. You could visit the villages of your friends and give them gifts--all without being connected to the internet. Video game preservationist and historian Kelsey Lewin tells the story of how a mundane-sounding game full of bug-catching, letter-writing, and furniture-collecting became one of Nintendo's best-loved franchises, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons eclipsing Super Mario Bros. for all-time sales in Japan, unlocking gaming's massive potential to tap into our desire to plant trees, find friends, and make the world a better place.
