"If there is any doubt lingering around our new man Sammy's talent, we're going to play a little game." As the Manager speaks, Sammy takes his place on the mound and Jimmy, his, behind the plate. And the entire team rotation of batters nervously waits to be called to the plate. "The rest of the team will face them via the batters on-deck circle. You'll each get nine pitches coming your way: You may hit them - fair or foul - called strike, or ball, or you will go out swinging or taking. The umpire will make each call. "Good luck, boys. Prepare to be amazed." Sammy takes his full wind-up and delivers a Knuckle-Curve. Jimmy reaches high as the ball refuses to drop. The batter looks like ol' Frank Howard as he takes a whirling, wind-breaking swing. A loud crack echoes through the small stadium. The bat breaks and flies twirling toward third base. The 3rd Base Coach catches the fat end, looks at it and throws it down. Sammy immediately collapses and drops to the ground. He is starched. Book Review: "I hung a knuckle-Curve a little too high for too long against a big hitter."As Jimmy and Sammy progress toward the big leagues, Landry provides an in-depth analysis of every nuanced pitch, from the split-finger fastball and the forkball to the screwball and slider. Without seamless communication between a catcher and a pitcher, the game does not take long to unravel. Sammy's trajectory to stardom especially his ability to pronate pitches encounters hurdles, as life is accustomed to provide on the road to success. It is a tale of a traveling musician and performer named Tony, whose undiagnosed tendencies toward a sad psychosis and schizophrenia eventually spawn action fitting for the sociopath few know, exists. Jim Landry is a native of New England, a published musician/songwriter, author and computer software architect. He enjoyed a career as a professional musician from 1966 through 2012 before settling in San Antonio, Texas to write. A busy mind, a tremendous long-term memory, adventures in music and life, years of travel, experience and meetings provide the story-telling and faction for Fool Star and provide ingredients for a reader to enjoy. While Tony reflects on his life, after a nasty confrontation leads to a beating, the reader examines the connection between Tony's stolen childhood and the man he is sorely becoming. His own thoughts corkscrew through relationships and dissect experience. Conflict, constituted by his diligence, street-smart intelligence and high emotional quotient, against the questionable path down which he trod, unwinds in the end to offer both a finish and a new beginning.

China, like many authoritarian regimes, struggles with the tension between the need to foster economic development by empowering local officials and the regime's imperative to control them politically. Landry explores how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) manages local officials in order to meet these goals and perpetuate an unusually decentralized authoritarian regime. Using unique data collected at the municipal, county, and village level, Landry examines in detail how the promotion mechanisms for local cadres have allowed the CCP to reward officials for the development of their localities without weakening political control. His research shows that the CCP's personnel management system is a key factor in explaining China's enduring authoritarianism and proves convincingly that decentralization and authoritarianism can work hand in hand.
