Lee and His Men at Gettysburg: The Death of a Nation

Lee and His Men at Gettysburg: The Death of a Nation

Clifford Dowdey

Skyhorse Publishing
2011
sidottu
In this sweeping account Clifford Dowdey recreates one of the most important battles in U.S. history. With vivid and breathtaking detail, Lee and His Men at Gettysburg is both a historical work and an honorary ode to the almost fifty thousand soldiers who died at the fields of Pennsylvania. Written with an emphasis on the Confederate forces, the book captures the brilliance and frustration of a general forced to contend with overwhelming odds and in-competent subordinates. Dowdey not only presents the facts of war, but brings to life the cast of characters that defined this singular moment in American history.

The South-Korean born artist Lee Ufan made a risky wager early in his career, introducing 'non-action' into his work. This notion, which recalls traditional Asian values, simultaneously echoes the quest of Modernist and Conceptual Art. A major figure of contemporary art, Lee Ufan is also a philosopher and a poet. During the 1960s in Japan, he contributed to shaping Mono-ha, a movement similar to Italy's Arte Povera and American Minimalism. Casting an eye across the artist's paintings and his three-dimensional oeuvre, from the beginning of his career through to his current work, this volume seeks to understand how Lee Ufan, who has espoused minimising intervention since he began making art, attempts to 'receive' the world in its natural, unadulterated state.

In 1918, the Church of God established a Bible training school in Cleveland, Tennessee. Meant to be the Christian training arm of the denomination, the school grew to include a high school, music school, and junior college at its campus in Sevierville, Tennessee. Following World War II, it returned to Cleveland and took the name Lee College in honor of the second leader of the denomination and school, Reverend F. J. Lee. In Lee University, John Coats not only chronicles the history of the college but also explores the university's connection to and representation of the Church of God in the American South, offering a microcosm of an evolving evangelical denomination into the second half of the twentieth century. As a faculty member at Lee, Coats is uniquely positioned to offer an inside perspective of the institution's history, examining the people and politics that have shaped it over time. Telling the story of the school through the contributions of influential leaders, key turning points, and ongoing tensions between traditionalists and progressives within the Church of God, Lee University is an ideal resource for those interested in Appalachian religious and Pentecostal history.

Alfred C. Young III's Lee's Army During the Petersburg Campaign is an intensive study of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during the Sieges of Petersburg and Richmond from the outset of the campaign in June 1864 to the end of the year. Young bases his work on years of research gleaned from the National Archives and numerous other primary sources and provides periodic strength figures for the combat elements of Lee's army, as well as casualties on the Confederate side during each of the major battles and during siege operations throughout the campaign. His work is not a comprehensive study of the campaign; rather, it is a study of each command or element comprising Lee's army. Lee's Army During the Petersburg Campaign is a companion to Young's earlier study, Lee's Army During the Overland Campaign. In addition to a narrative that provides background information on the campaign and a selection of twenty-six maps, the book features ninety-nine detailed tables of casualty data and unit strengths. Until now, accurate information on the strength and casualties in Lee's army during the latter half of 1864 has mostly been speculative. Young's work is the first serious attempt to correct this gap in the history.
