First Published in 1986 Eastern Europe 1968-1984 has been written in response to renewed interest in Eastern European events in the 60s and 70s. In writing this work the author concentrated on changes in the system in the post-Stalinist period, which were intended to reduce the political, economic, and social contradictions but have often accentuated them instead. The book brings themes like balance of power; Eastern Europe’s new economics; patterns of normalization; the CMEA’s economy and world recession; perception of Eastern Europe in the West; and East-West German rapprochement. This is an important read for students and researchers of East European Politics, East European history and International Relations.

Santi Gucci Fiorentino, Artist and Entrepreneur in Early Modern Poland
The original research in this book analyzes the artistic activity of Santi Gucci (1533– c.1600), a Florentine sculptor active in Poland in the second half of the sixteenth century, and his workshop.Chapters examine the organization of the artistic workshop (sculpting and masonry) and the model of the artist’s functioning as an entrepreneur in Renaissance Poland, using Santi Gucci’s activity as an example. Gucci shaped the image of Polish sculpture in the sixteenth century for more than 50 years, even though his work has not yet been fully examined. Women in the First World War and the Russian Civil War
Women in the First World War and the Russian Civil War explores how Russian literature and autobiographical writing portrayed nurses, women soldiers, and commanders who served in the First World War and Russian Civil War. Simonova’s research challenges the traditional perception of war as a masculine domain, introducing the concept of military femininities, particularly ‘expanded femininity’, which combines traditional feminine traits such as consolation, care, and inspiration with bravery, militancy, and leadership. The study focuses on lesser-known texts from the 1910s to the early 1930s, encompassing both well-known and underexplored writers like Boris Pilnyak, Boris Lavrenev, Eduard Bagritsky, Veniamin Kaverin, Zinaida Chalaia, Tatiana Dubinskaia, Sofia Fedorchenko, and Liusia Argutinskaia, as well as the diaries of sisters of mercy. With this comprehensive range of literary sources, this book demonstrates that representations of women are crucial to shaping and understanding the reception of these wars. Offering a fresh perspective on gender, war, and memory in early twentieth-century Russian literature, this monograph will appeal not only to scholars of literature and gender issues, but also to anyone interested in cultural and military history.
