Windows on Japanese Education

Windows on Japanese Education

The fact that Japanese students consistently outperform other nationalities on international tests of educational achievement has made the Japanese educational system a leading topic for media attention and evaluative study. This volume is a collection of essays by Japanese and American scholars in the field of Japanese education that presents a current systematic overview of this system, its strengths, and its weaknesses.Topics ranging from the history of Japanese education and its recent reform campaign to the methods used to teach preschoolers and elementary students, women, teachers, and engineers are the primary focus of this study. Each contributor writes both within his or her own specialty and with a view to those political, social, and economic factors that affect the Japanese educational climate. A look to the future of Japanese higher education, as well as guidelines that can benefit educational systems in other countries, conclude the work.

Originally published in 1996, this book is a study of two of the central themes of medieval German mythology, the Dietrich and Nibelung legends. It traces its two legendary topics form their historical roots during the last centuries of the Roman Empire to the medieval texts that make them known to us. Many of the medieval texts have never been translated into English or even modern German. A synopsis of each work is therefore included so that the reader can form an idea of the content of the works in question. The book takes a text-oriented approach. The book includes a chronological chart which puts most of the texts and literary works discussed in a European and world context.

The Psychology of Teaching and Learning Music introduces readers to the key theoretical principles, concepts, and research findings about learning and how these concepts and principles can be applied in the music classroom. Beginning with an overview of the study of teaching and learning, and moving through applying theory to practice, and reflective practice in the process of personal growth, this text focuses on music learning theories, behavioral approaches, cognitive, social-cognitive development, and constructive views of learning. It includes culture and community, learning differences, motivation, effective curricular design, assessment, and how to create learning environments, illustrated by practical case studies, projects, exercises, and photos. Showing students how to apply the psychology theory and research in practice as music educators, this book provides a valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate music education students and faculty.

Gabriel Faure

Gabriel Faure

Edward R. Phillips

Routledge

First published in 2011, this research study includes a biography section as well as the works of Gabriel Urbain Fauré born on 12 May 1845. Much of Fauré’s music, especially the late pieces, remain little played and little known—as a result, his reputation as a salon composer of pleasant music continues even among educated musicians. The author suggests that it is more likely that the difficulty of much of Fauré’s music for the listener and the demands it places upon him or her are the principal reasons for its omission from concert programs and for a misunderstanding of Fauré’s place in the history of French music
The Importance of Pi-Interactions in Crystal Engineering

The Importance of Pi-Interactions in Crystal Engineering

Edward R. T. Tiekink; Julio Zukerman-Schpector

sidottu
Crystal engineers aim to control the way molecules aggregate in the crystalline phase and are therefore concerned with crystal structure prediction, polymorphism, and discovering the relative importance of different types of intermolecular forces and their influence on molecular structure. In order to design crystal structures, knowledge of the types, strengths, and nature of possible intermolecular interactions is essential. Non-covalent interactions involving p-systems is a theme that is under extensive investigation as these interactions can be inductors for the assembly of a vast array of supramolecular architectures. The Importance of Pi-Interactions in Crystal Engineeringcovers topics ranging from the identification of interactions involving p-systems, their impact on molecular and crystal structure in both organic and metallorganic systems, and how these interactions might be exploited in the design of new materials. Specialist reviews are written by internationally recognized researchers drawn from both academia and industry. The Importance of Pi-Interactions in Crystal Engineeringprovides an essential overview of this important aspect of crystal engineering for both entrants to the field as well as established practitioners, and for those working in crystallography, medicinal and pharmaceutical sciences, solid-state chemistry, physical chemistry, materials and nanotechnology

Gustav Mahler and Guido Adler

Gustav Mahler and Guido Adler

Edward R. Reilly

Cambridge University Press
2009
nidottu
In this book Edward Reilly provides the essential documents connected with the friendship between the eminent Viennese music-historian Guido Adler and the composer Gustav Mahler. The nature and extent of that friendship has been the source of a number of questions for some years. Although Adler was the author of one of the important early studies of Mahler, he was reticent about speaking of his personal connection with the composer, and for many years the single available published letter from Mahler to Adler was one that was sharply critical in tone. A few somewhat disparaging references in Alma Mahler's recollections also raised questions about the degree of friendship between the two men.
