Bourdieu and the Journalistic Field

Bourdieu and the Journalistic Field

Bourdieu and the Journalistic Field is an exciting new text which builds on and extends Pierre Bourdieu's impassioned critique of our media-saturated culture. Presenting for the first time in English the work of influential scholars who worked with or were influenced by Bourdieu, this volume is the one and only book for Anglophone scholars seeking a more detailed elaboration of field theory in relation to the mass media. In his short book 'On Television', Bourdieu provided a powerful critique of the 'journalistic field', but what exactly does he mean by this? How does the journalistic field relate to external economic and political pressures? And what kind of autonomy can, or should, journalists expect to maintain? Such questions are taken up in case studies of such diverse phenomena as media coverage of the AIDS-contaminated blood scandal in France, U.S. youth media activism, and political interview shows on both sides of the Atlantic. Chapters by both American and French scholars also demonstrate methods for measuring field autonomy and spatially mapping journalistic fields, or discuss the similarities and differences between field theory, new institutionalism, hegemony, and differentiation theory. Rejecting all forms of dogmatism, the authors in this volume demonstrate why field theory remains a "work in progress," and indeed, a research paradigm whose promise has only begun to be tapped. The book includes an important and hitherto unpublished text by Pierre Bourdieu, 'Fields of Journalism, Social Science and Politics', and contributions from Rodney Benson, Patrick Champagne, Eric Darras, Julien Duval, Daniel Hallin, Eric Klinenberg, Dominique Marchetti, Erik Neveu, and Michael Schudson.

Big Bang Big God

How did the universe begin and how has it evolved? Does a scientific explanation mean that we can do without God? Why are the laws of nature so special ('fine-tuned') as to produce a universe with intelligent creatures like us in it in the first place? Can the existence of a multiverse, a vast or infinite collection of universes, explain the specialness of this universe? This book argues that only God provides an explanation for the universe to exist at all, and that design by God provides the best and most rational explanation to adopt for the fine-tuning.

By the time he was forty, Lorenzo Da Ponte had been a poet, priest, lover and libertine, a friend of Casanova, collaborator then enemy of Salieri, and ultimately the librettist for three of Mozart's most sublime operas - "The Marriage of Figaro", "Cosi fan tutte" and "Don Giovanni". After losing all his money and the woman he loved he started afresh in New York, and by the end of his life he had founded its first opera house and become a university professor. "Lorenzo Da Ponte" is a fascinating and entertaining biography of a larger-than-life character, and a vibrant portrait of four cities and four changing eras of history.

Swamps and marshes have traditionally been regarded as places of horror and ill health in western culture - places to be feared, drained and filled. In this wide-ranging study, Rod Giblett examines the swamp from a cross-disciplinary standpoint. Using material from fiction, films and popular culture and drawing on literature, cultural studies, philosophy, social theory, critical geography and medical history, he criticises the urge to drain swamps ('the project of modernity') as masculinist and imperialist.

Islamist political parties have enjoyed unprecedented election victories in recent times. The Islamic Revolution in Iran, the election of the Justice and Development Party in Turkey and the coming to power of Islamists, albeit briefly, after the Arab Spring, has changed the political landscape in the Middle East and has ramifications for the entire Muslim World. Yet the continuing success of these parties depends on their record on economic development and employment creation. Are their economic policies different from those of their autocratic predecessors? Have they been influenced by the writings of academic Islamist economists? This book looks at the impact of Islamic teaching on public economic policy and asks how Islamic economics differs from mainstream micro and macroeconomics.

This book explores whether public policy in Muslim majority countries has been influenced by Islamic economic discourse. It looks at how Islamic values can influence choices made by businesses and governments. It asks whether Shari'ah teaching affects taxation and social welfare policies. It assesses the potential of Islamic economics to provide an alternative to a capitalist economic system and looks at the implications for international economic relations. It's individual chapters evaluate the economic successes and failures of OIC member states (Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, Tunisia and Turkey) and their changing status in the global economic order.
Infrastructure for the Built Environment: Global Procurement Strategies

Infrastructure for the Built Environment: Global Procurement Strategies

Rodney Howes; Herbert Robinson

Throughout the world there is a growing demand for high quality public services to support socio-economic development. Infrastructure is central to improving the level of public services and the quality of the built environment. But in key areas such as transport, energy, water, healthcare, education and communications, public resources are not sufficient to keep pace with this demand. As the public sector struggles to keep up, the private sector is increasingly involved in the procurement of economic and social infrastructure. Until now procurement strategies have often concentrated on the mechanisms and the ‘bricks and mortar’ without a thorough analysis of the processes and their implications for services. The result is that all too often infrastructure projects are implemented in an ad hoc and fragmented way. In this ground-breaking book, Rodney Howes and Herbert Robinson provide a holistic approach to infrastructure provision that facilitates infrastructure delivery aimed at continuously improving the level and quality of services. Critical issues of policy and strategy, implementation, and operational aspects are examined within the context of sustainability. By emphasising the importance of procuring infrastructure within an overall national or regional development policy and strategy, the authors have demonstrated the importance of linking investment and resource decisions to local social, economic and environmental needs. With each chapter carefully written to reflect part of the infrastructure delivery chain and illustrated with practical examples and case studies from around the world, this book offers a new blueprint for infrastructure investment and resource management.

The official school drop-out figure in the US in recent years has been 25 per cent of the cohort. Estimates from large cities are often double these rates, and in some areas 60 per cent or worse. This text focuses on this problem in US schools, but from an unusual perspective. It is a study gained from in-depth interviews of 100 "stop-outs" - that is, those who dropped out but then decided to return to school. Four basic questions are posed by this text: who drops out?; why did they drop out?; what caused them to return?; and what intervention policies can be formulated to prevent students dropping out in the first place? The answers provided by this text for the last question are intended to make it of particular interest to school administrators.

A chance meeting in 1936 gave Lisa and Jimmy Sheridan the opportunity of a lifetime. Keen amateur photographers, their company Studio Lisa was engaged by the then Duke and Duchess of York to take casual photographs of their family, including the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, at their homes, Royal Lodge and at 145 Piccadilly, London. At a time of tradition and formality, when it was unheard of for mere unknowns to be given such an opportunity, the hiring of Studio Lisa proved to be a revolutionary and popular move on the part of the royals as it humanised them in the eyes of their subjects. They soon struck up an unlikely friendship with Lisa and Jimmy – one that would span over more than thirty years and yield thirteen separate photographic sessions, the last of which included Queen Elizabeth’s young children.Informally Royal charts the story of Studio Lisa, from its humble beginnings right through to the granting of two Royal Warrants. For the first time Studio Lisa’s cache of remarkable royal photographs is brought together, producing a marvellous collector’s item and a treasure thankfully preserved for posterity.
The Rise and Fall of the Arab Empire and the Founding of Western Pre-eminence
Flooding out of poverty-stricken medieval Arabia, in a century of unprecedented conquest, plunder-seeking tribesmen led by zealous successors of the prophet Mohammed, to whom the Word of God had been given, created the nation of Islam, an empire of faith, certainties, riches and slaves, of scholarship, science and the arts, and a lasting ethos from the Atlantic coasts of Morocco and Iberia to the great rivers of northern India and the borders of China. Murderous clan rivalry, however, fierce sectarianism, pervasive extravagance and corruption and inept statecraft led within decades to the break up of the empire. Successor states, lesser empires, often striving to extend their powers, most lasting but a few score years, struggled under attack from outside and rebellion from within. All failed eventually under the burdens of dynastic rivalry and inability to reform. These factors, added to hardships imposed by the scarcity of natural resources, the effects of warming climate change in the early Middle Ages, famine and pestilence, and the evolution of crucial terms of trade in the Mediterranean to the advantage of the Europeans, led finally to the fall of the Arabs into 500 years of poverty and ignorance. In the eleventh century, the Christian-military reawakening of Europe from the so-called Dark Ages, a Europe with its wealth of natural resources and its more temperate climate, led to significant commercial advances being made by Westerners, to the dawning of capitalism with all its virtues and defects and the beginnings of a prosperous middle class; 'humanism' and the Renaissance, the recognition of the need for separation of church and state; the intervention and spread of the printing press and with it, learning, to the discovery of the Americas, the Reformation of the Roman church, the Scientific and Industrial Revolutions, and to today's world. No comparable events have yet stirred the Muslim world.
God, the Multiverse, and Everything

God, the Multiverse, and Everything

Rodney D. Holder

Modern cosmology tells us that the universe is remarkably 'fine-tuned' for life. If the constants of physics or the initial conditions at the Big Bang were different by the smallest of margins then the universe would have been dull and lifeless. Why should the universe be so accommodating to life? Many cosmologists believe that the existence of many universes can explain why ours is so special. In this book Rodney Holder subjects this 'multiverse' hypothesis to rigorous philosophical critique. A multitude of problems is exposed. Going substantially further than existing treatments, Holder argues that divine design is the best explanation for cosmic fine-tuning, specifically that design by God is a superior explanation in terms of both initial plausibility and explanatory power, and is therefore the most rational position to take on the basis of the cosmological data.

His findings lead to a shocking revelation that sends shockwaves through the village. The prolonged investigation takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of twists and turns. How will this clash of cultures be resolved and will innovation triumph over tradition? Will the true suspect be captured or will a miscarriage of justice occur? Who is travelling in the Dead man's curve and who will survive?

Tennessee's John Wilder

Tennessee's John Wilder

University Press of America

sidottu
The Honorable John S. Wilder has served the constituents of Tennessee for over forty-years, and this historical accomplishment serves as the foundation of this work. In his political life, Lieutenant Governor Wilder has directly or indirectly impacted some of the most important administrative and public policy decisions over this period of time. Through archival document analysis and personal interviews with the Lieutenant Governor and many of his closest aids, political colleagues, and staunch opponents, the authors of this text have traced the history of John S. Wilder's accomplishments and defeats from the late 1950s to the present. This triangulation of data collection and analysis helped the authors uncover forgotten political stories, and assisted in substantiating facts about many of the Lieutenant Governor's major political decisions. Highlighted in the text are Wilder's political triumphs over two coup attempts within the Democratic Party to oust him as Speaker of the Senate in the late 1980s. These efforts failed when the longest serving State Legislator in American history reached across party lines to maintain control of the second most powerful position in Tennessee state government. Now in his late 80's, Wilder is still determined as ever to continue leading the Tennessee Senate well into the twenty-first century. This book chronicles the political career of the man from Somerville.
