This book offers both a biography of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, only the second-ever woman appointed to the Supreme Court, and a historical analysis of her impact.Ruth Bader Ginsburg: A Life in American History explores Ginsburg's path to holding the highest position in the judicial branch of U.S. government as a Supreme Court justice for almost three decades. Readers will learn about the choices, challenges, and triumphs that this remarkable American has lived through, and about the values that shape the United States.Ginsburg, sometimes referred to as "The Notorious RBG" or "RBG" was a professor of law, a member of the American Civil Liberties Union, an advocate for women's rights, and more, before her tenure as Supreme Court justice. She has weighed in on decisions, such as Bush v. Gore (2000); King v. Burwell (2015); and Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission (2018), that continue to guide lawmaking and politics. Ginsburg's crossover to stardom was unprecedented, though perhaps not surprising. Where some Americans see the Supreme Court as a decrepit institution, others see Ginsburg as an embodiment of the timeless principles on which America was founded.

A non-technical explanation and description for "the person in the pew." Here were two women separated by time, country, and culture. One was a Moabite, the other a Jew. One married a farmer, the other a king. But God used them both to bring salvation to the world through His Son, Jesus Christ.
As a multi-faceted author, gracious hostess and cook, Ruth has long been admired by her many friends who have been invited to her dinners. One cannot forget her multi-ethnic specialties, among them Romanian eggplant salad, Colombian Ajiaco potato soup, Bukovinian Schmettentorte (sour cream cake), to name just a small sampling of her culinary repertoire. French gastronome Jean Brillat-Savarin once remarked that the discovery of a new dish does more for the happiness of the new race than the discovery of a star. George Bernard Shaw also believed that there was no love more sincere than the love of food. A sampling of the recipes from this book readily confirms both opinions. Vladimir F. Wertsman, author of What 's Cooking in Multicultural America (Scarecrow Press, 1996) This is an unpretentious cookbook designed for epicurean tastes. It is also a tribute to the women of various ethnic backgrounds who left us the legacy of fine cuisine, which I hope to pass on to future generations. The majority of these recipes are from Bukovina, once Northern Romania, and other countries which were once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Some of the Bukovinian dishes are almost legendary in their nostalgia. Many have never before been documented and, most probably, have never been featured on restaurant menus. I have wandered across four continents and have experienced life under monarchies, communism, and fascism, all of which I survived. These multiple acculturations were extremely difficult, but had also some positive effects: one of them being the acquisition of a myriad of recipes. I am pleased to share with you some of them in the hope that you will enjoy this adventure as much as I did. Ruth Glasberg Gold

"Exquisitely imagined, deeply researched . . . brings to the foreground the most enigmatic and fascinating figure in Gone with the Wind. This is a brave work of literary empathy by a writer at the height of his powers, who demonstrates a magisterial understanding of the period, its clashing cultures, and its heartbreaking crises. " --Geraldine Brooks, author of MarchThe only authorized prequel to Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind--the unforgettable story of Mammy. On a Caribbean island consumed by the flames of revolution, an infant girl falls under the care of two French migr s, Henri and Solange Fournier, who take the beautiful child they call Ruth to the bustling American city of Savannah. What follows is the sweeping tale of Ruth's life as shaped first by her strong-willed mistress, and then by Solange's daughter Ellen and Gerald O'Hara, the rough Irishman Ellen chooses to marry; the Butler family of Charleston and their unexpected connection to Mammy Ruth; and finally Scarlett O'Hara--the irrepressible Southern belle Mammy raises from birth. As we witness the lives of three generations of women, gifted storyteller Donald McCaig reveals a nuanced portrait of Mammy, at once a proud woman and a captive, a strict disciplinarian who has never experienced freedom herself. Through it all, Mammy endures, a rock in the river of time. Set against the backdrop of the South from the 1820s until the dawn of the Civil War, here is a remarkable story of fortitude, heartbreak, and indomitable will--and a tale that will forever illuminate your reading of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind.

Sometimes in our lives, rounds of difficulties come our way. They hit like a boxer's left hook, making our legs weak and eyes blurred. This is the world we live in - a place where there is beauty, majesty, love, color, pain, and loss. So how do we navigate those times when pain becomes so loud we can't hear anything else? The book of Ruth provides a window into the lives of two women who are dealing with some really, really hard things. But in the midst of their struggles, God is there; he's got them in his hands. It may be hard to see, but he's in process of caring for their needs and providing a hope and a future. Ruth teaches us the old, but very true axiom that "life is hard, but God is good."
Constituting the first comprehensive look at Ruth Maleczech’s work, Jessica Brater’s companion is a landmark study in innovative theatre practice, bringing together biography, critical analysis, and original interviews to establish a portrait of this Obie-award winning theatre artist. Tracing Maleczech’s background, training, and influences, the volume contextualizes her work and the founding of Mabou Mines within the wider landscape of American avant-garde theatre. It considers her performances and productions, revealing both her interest in making ordinary women important onstage, and her predilection for resurrecting extraordinary women from history and finding their resonances within a contemporary theatrical context. Brater considers Maleczech’s investment in redrawing the boundaries of what women are allowed to say, both on stage and off, and shows how her commitment to radical artistic and production risks has reshaped the contours of a contemporary theatrical experience. Highlights of the volume include discussion of productions such as Mabou Mines’ Lear, Dead End Kids, Hajj, Lucia’s Chapters of Coming Forth by Day, Red Beads, and La Divina Caricatura, as well as a close look at Maleczech’s final work-in-progress, Imagining the Imaginary Invalid.
With her striking looks, the raven-haired, dark eyed Ruth Roman had an air of sophistication that made her seem sexy yet wholesome. She had to strive harder than most to establish herself as a leading actress in Hollywood during its glory years and finally broke through in 1949 with her role in Champion. As one of the last Warner Bros. contract players, she appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's classic Strangers on a Train. Seen at her best in strong parts, such as the ambitious Ronda Castle in Anthony Mann's The Far Country or as a modern-day Lady Macbeth, she enjoyed a varied career as a freelancer before re-inventing herself as a character actress of note on television. A remarkable return to the screen in the bizarre psycho-horror The Baby (1973) assured her of cult status. This is the first book dedicated to a committed but often undervalued actress who is fondly remembered by fans of classic film. More than a biography, it seeks to contextualize the actress within her own time, illuminate her Hollywood experience and celebrate her extensive career.
