It was September 11 of 1814, during the "forgotten" War of 1812, and the future of American independence was on the line. The most powerful military force in the world, the British Royal Navy, had positioned a massive naval blockade all along the American Atlantic coast to the Gulf of Mexico, slowly strangling the infant U.S. economy. The invasion of Washington, D.C. by Lord Wellington's "Invincibles" the month before had resulted in the burning of the Capitol and White House, scattering Congress and the President to the wind. In the largest assembly of combatants during the entire war, the people and city of Baltimore were targeted by the British as a hated "nest of pirates". At noon that Sunday, church bells sounded the alarm as 50 war ships of the British juggernaught appeared within sight of Fort McHenry Against all odds, one American heroically led the defense that saved his beloved city. Five weeks later, upon hearing the news of the Battle of Baltimore in London, the British government finally relented and maneuvered to quickly negotiate an end to the war. Baltimore and America were saved as Sam Smith became a military hero for the second time in his illustrious life. The fruits of his efforts are recorded in our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, and the results of his deeds are forever emblazoned on every American heart. This is the story that shows what can happen "when freemen shall stand " Here is a tribute to the un-sung patriot and his life of leadership and service. Smith is a bold example of true American heroism and wisdom from one of the darkest days of our existence as a free people. Inspiring us all today, this book is the authors' homage to the early Republic, and Sam Smith's fight for freedom and liberty, illuminating the all important leadership lessons which teach us how one American can make the difference in preserving the "land of the free and the home of the brave."

A tribute to John Hughes movies and the 80es era. Sam never liked his birthdays because not a single one of them was happy. When he turned one, he fell face-down into his birthday cake. When he turned seven, he broke his arm. At his twelfth birthday, his house caught fire. Now Sam is about to turn sixteen and he is dreading the day. The only birthday wish he has is for Jake Timbers, the Mr. Popular of Arcadia High, to acknowledge his existence, or better yet give him a happy-birthday kiss. But that's unlikely to happen. Or is it?

Sam Steele’s Adventures on Land and Sea (1906) is a novel by L. Frank Baum. Although he is more widely known as the author of the Land of Oz series, Baum also used several pseudonyms to make forays into more conventional fiction for young adults. Sam Steele’s Adventures on Land and Sea, written under the pen name “Capt. Hugh Fitzgerald,” is a story of discovery, betrayal, fortune, and adventure. “An orphan, now, and alone in the world. This father whom the angry seas had engulfed was the only relative I had known since my sweet little mother wearied of the world and sought refuge in Heaven, years and years ago.” Having already lost his mother as a boy, sixteen year old Sam Steele faces tragedy once more. His father’s ship, the Saracen, was lost at sea near the Lucayan Archipelago, leaving just one sailor alive. All that remains of Captain Steele are his watch, his ring, and a son who never had the chance to say goodbye. Soon, Sam is cut off from his rightful inheritance by Mrs. Ranck, his guardian. Alone in the world, without a penny to his name, Sam reconnects with his maternal uncle Naboth, a sea captain preparing to sail from San Francisco to join the Klondike Gold Rush. Together, they journey into the vast Pacific, where fortune and danger await. While Sam Steele’s Adventures on Land and Sea is far from the fantasy and fairy tale style most of Baum’s readers adore him for, it remains an entertaining work of adventure fiction for devoted fans of the Oz series and newcomers alike. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of L. Frank Baum’s Sam Steele’s Adventures on Land and Sea is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.
