Providing tools to enhance treatment of any clinical problem, this book shows how integrating motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can lead to better client outcomes than using either approach on its own. The authors demonstrate that MI strategies are ideally suited to boost client motivation and strengthen the therapeutic relationship, whether used as a pretreatment intervention or throughout the course of CBT. User-friendly features include extensive sample dialogues, learning exercises for practitioners, and 35 reproducible client handouts that can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size. This book is in the Applications of Motivational Interviewing series, edited by Stephen Rollnick, William R. Miller, and Theresa B. Moyers.
The Case for the Corporate Death Penalty

A critical examination of the wrongdoing underlying the 2008 financial crisis An unprecedented breakdown in the rule of law occurred in the United States after the 2008 financial collapse. Bank of America, JPMorgan, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, and other large banks settled securities fraud claims with the Securities and Exchange Commission for failing to disclose the risks of subprime mortgages they sold to the investing public. But a corporation cannot commit fraud except through human beings working at and managing the firm. Rather than breaking up these powerful megabanks, essentially imposing a corporate death penalty, the government simply accepted fines that essentially punished innocent shareholders instead of senior leaders at the megabanks. It allowed the real wrongdoers to walk away from criminal responsibility. In The Case for the Corporate Death Penalty, Mary Kreiner Ramirez and Steven A. Ramirez examine the best available evidence about the wrongdoing underlying the financial crisis. They reveal that the government failed to use its most powerful law enforcement tools despite overwhelming proof of wide-ranging and large-scale fraud on Wall Street before, during, and after the crisis. The pattern of criminal indulgences exposes the onset of a new degree of crony capitalism in which the most economically and political powerful can commit financial crimes of vast scale with criminal and regulatory immunity. A new economic royalty has seized the commanding heights of our economy through their control of trillions in corporate and individual wealth and their ability to dispense patronage. The Case for the Corporate Death Penalty shows that this new lawlessness poses a profound threat that urgently demands political action and proposes attainable measures to restore the rule of law in the financial sector.

Celebrate Black History Month by journeying into the minds of the young African-American men and women who fought for equality during the civil rights movement. Though the social movement began in the late 1950s and continued through the 1960s, the issue remains every bit as relevant today as racial bias continues to permeate American life. In Black Lives Matter, playwright Steven A. Butler Jr. strips away the caricatures and stereotypes to reveal the complicated and fiercely beautiful truth underneath -- the joys, pains, struggle and heartbreak that define those who strove to reconcile humankind. Courtney Baker-Oliver directs this timely and important theatrical piece for Restoration Stage.

This book is about the p53 gene, one of the most frequently mutated or deleted genes in human cancers. The frequent occurrence of inactivated p53 implicates this gene product in the genesis of many human cancers. The p53 gene can suppress the growth of cancer cells and the transformation process by oncogenes. The p53 protein is a transcription factor that can repress or activate promoters containing one of three p53 DNA-binding motifs. The activity of p53 is regulated by phosphorylation and other transcription factors. Replacement of the p53 function or restoration of the p53 biochemical pathway is a focus of gene therapy.

A cold case that's heating up. A truth that looks both ways. And a move only a chess master could see. Step into mysteries that demand courage, discernment, and the will to seek the truth. Conceived and co-written by the daughter of Robert Arthur - the creator of the Three Investigators universe - this restoration of the classic series takes its iconic characters into a new age, with gripping contemporary adventures for young readers who crave meaning, want to share in the growth of characters they admire, and seek a world they can return to again and again. In the tenth book of a 26-book story arc, The Three Investigators find themselves working on a cold case with a personal connection. When Freya Haldorsson introduces them to Jimmy Littlewolf, a member of her high school chess club and a Shoshone Indian whose father was killed on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming the previous year, the team agrees to investigate - even though the death occurred more than 12 months ago and 1,000 miles away, in a place they've never been. The Three Investigators get lucky when they learn from Hector Sebastian, the famous mystery writer and mentor to the boys, that his Wyoming bolthole is right next to the Wind River Reservation. They get lucky again when they discover that their friend Phillipa Paxton has a sister, Georgina, whose veterinary practice is close to where Thomas Littlewolf's body was found. Georgina was even on the witness list compiled by the sheriff who investigated Littlewolf's death. As the team crisscrosses southern California to gather clues - from a visit to the Mission Indian casino in Highland where Jimmy's half-brother Jake works, to a trail ride in the San Bernardino Mountains with a cowboy named Travis Garrett - a confusing list of suspects and motives begins to emerge. What does an old DNA test have to do with Jimmy's skill at chess? What is his half-brother Jake Blackhorse hiding? What is Janusian creativity, anyway? And why exactly was Billy Redsmoke fired from his wrangling job on the Triple X? While Mallory goes undercover as a homeless teenager and Worthington poses as a chess hustler, Pete works to bring Hector and Phillipa together, Bob starts to view Freya in a new light, and Jupiter's creativity takes him to unexpected places. In this unusual variation on a Three Investigators case, Jupiter, Pete, Bob, and Mallory tackle a mystery that is very different - and a lot more gratifying - than it initially appears.
