Il libro riassume i risultati di un'indagine condotta tramite questionario in un piccolo centro rurale cinese nell'arco di un mese. La ricerca esplorativa confronta i risultati del campione cinese con dati simili relativi alle comunit europee dell'ESS in sei ambiti di ricerca: visione del mondo, fiducia nell'uomo, soddisfazione, comportamento umano, scopo della vita e valori umani. I risultati della ricerca mostrano che i cinesi sono notevolmente pi affidabili e disponibili rispetto ai loro omologhi europei. I cinesi sono molto soddisfatti del proprio Paese, ma valutano anche la situazione economica del loro Paese come prestigiosa. Sono meno soddisfatti della situazione sanitaria e dell'istruzione. La soddisfazione generale delle persone incluse nel campione notevolmente superiore alla media degli europei. Per quanto riguarda i valori umani, il valore pi importante la sicurezza della loro madrepatria. Secondo il modello LVPLS creato per il collegamento strutturale degli indicatori di valore e degli indicatori di scopo della vita, i valori che servono gli interessi individuali influenzano in misura maggiore gli scopi della vita che servono gli interessi della comunit .
