Generation Y has grown up in an age of the brand, bombarded by name products. In Branded, Alissa Quart illuminates the unsettling new reality of marketing to teenagers, as well as the quieter but no less worrisome forms of teen branding: the teen consultants who work for corporations in exchange for product the girls obsessed with cosmetic surgery who will do anything to look like women on TV and those teens simply obsessed with admission into a name-brand college. We also meet the pockets of kids attempting to turn the tables on the cocksure corporations that so cynically strive to manipulate them. Chilling, thought-provoking, even darkly amusing, Branded brings one of the most disturbing and least talked about results of contemporary business and culture to the fore-and ensures that we will never look at today's youth the same way again.
Culture, Ethics, and Advance Care Planning

Culture, Ethics, and Advance Care Planning

Set against a backdrop of cultural diversity, the current emphasis on advance care planning, both in the United States and abroad, necessitates a sourcebook on how to navigate such complex terrain. This book will serve as a guide to best practice for advance care planning in a multicultural society. Such a guide will help those trying to engage in the often delicate discussions that take place during advance care planning to do so in a culturally sensitive manner. In addition, the book will provide general guidance in discussing difficult issues in a multicultural clinical setting. Given how entrenched advance care planning is in the medical context, to not attempt to engage in the process in a culturally sensitive way smacks of a dangerous indifference and sets the stage for conflict where calm could exist. In the fast-paced world of clinical medicine, recognizing and acknowledging differences in worldviews is often overlooked. When dealing with the delicate issues broached in advance care planning, such oversights can lead to deep rifts within the health care provider-patient relationship. This damage can be irreparable. By providing guidance to those engaged in such endeavors and setting advance care planning in a global context, health care practitioners will be better able to care for their patients and achieve the noble goal of advance care planning_giving volume to the voice of the patient in the last chapter of her life.

Gender and Succession in Medieval and Early Modern Islam

Gender and Succession in Medieval and Early Modern Islam

In Gender and Succession in Medieval and Early Modern Islam: Bilateral Descent and the Legacy of Fatima, Alyssa Gabbay examines episodes in pre-modern Islamic history in which individuals or societies recognized descent from both men and women. Fatima, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, features prominently in this study, for her example constituted a striking precedent for acknowledging bilateral descent in both Sunni and Shi‘i societies, with all of its ramifications for female inheritance, succession and identity. Covering a broad geographical and chronological swath, Gender and Succession in Medieval and Early Modern Islam presents alternative perspectives to patriarchal narratives, and breaks new ground in its focus upon how people conceived of family structures and bloodlines. In so doing, it builds upon a tradition of studies seeking to dispel monolithic understandings of Islam and Gender.

Age range 2 to 5In Barron's top-selling The Potty Book for Girls, renowned children's author Alyssa Satin Capucilli introduced us to Hannah as she graduated from nappies to potty. Now, Capucilli returns with a new adventure for Hannah; she's getting a new brother or sister! Having a new baby in the house brings about a range of emotions in an older sibling, from excitement to joy to jealousy. In Hannah is a Big Sister, Capucilli and Stott employ straightforward text and eye-catching illustration to explore all of these feelings through a child's eyes. Starting on the big day when the baby arrives home from the hospital, Hannah will hold the tiny new bundle, count fingers and toes, try to figure out why the baby is crying, help with nappies and bath time, and anticipate teaching her new sibling all sorts of things - like using the potty when the time comes. Waiting until the baby is old enough to play is a big factor for young children, so here Hannah will also learn the importance of being patient.

The Wizard of Oz as American Myth

The Wizard of Oz as American Myth

Since the publication of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900, authors, filmmakers, and theatrical producers have been retelling and reinventing this uniquely American fairy tale. This volume examines six especially significant incarnations of the story: Baum's original novel, the MGM classic The Wizard of Oz (1939), Sidney Lumet's African American film musical The Wiz (1978), Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (1995), Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's Broadway hit Wicked: A New Musical (2003), and the SyFy Channel miniseries Tin Man (2007). A close consideration of these works demonstrates how versions of Baum's tale are influenced by and help shape notions of American myth, including issues of gender, race, home, and magic, and makes clear that the Wizard of Oz narrative remains compelling and relevant today.

The Ends of Mourning

The Ends of Mourning

The Ends of Mourning explores from an interdisciplinary perspective the contemporary crisis of mourning. In an age skeptical of history and memory, we relate to the past only as a spectacle, a product to be consumed in the cultural marketplace. The book charts the emergence and development of the problem of mourning in the writings of Freud, Proust, and Freud's successor Lacan. Freud's idea of "sorrow work" and Proust's concept of involuntary memory defined the terms of the classic modernist account of mourning in the fields of psychoanalysis and literature. Yet their insistence on the egotistical aspects of loss to the exclusion of all ethical and political considerations threatens the dissolution of the question of mourning.
