Traditional and Western Medicine

Traditional and Western Medicine

Caryl James Bateman

University of the West Indies Press

Traditional and Western Medicine: Voices from Jamaican Psychiatric Patients is for anyone interested in broadening their perspective on alternative treatment models, particularly the use of traditional methods alongside Western biomedical techniques. Caryl James Bateman critiques the tensions that exist between conventional approaches in psychiatric treatment and highlights how these may interfere with patients' views, especially those patients who have endemic beliefs in spiritual influences on health and traditional cures and rituals, often originating from African teachings. Through the stories of six former patients who, despite receiving Western biomedical treatment, conceptualize their illness using a traditional viewpoint, James Bateman empowers the patients to tell their own stories of their personal journeys and share their lived experiences of mental illness, giving the reader a rare first-hand account of what lies beyond the label of a psychiatric diagnosis.

This valuable book focuses on a collection of powerful methods of analysis that yield deep number-theoretical estimates. Particular attention is given to counting functions of prime numbers and multiplicative arithmetic functions. Both real variable (”elementary”) and complex variable (”analytic”) methods are employed. The reader is assumed to have knowledge of elementary number theory (abstract algebra will also do) and real and complex analysis. Specialized analytic techniques, including transform and Tauberian methods, are developed as needed.Comments and corrigenda for the book are found at www.math.uiuc.edu/~diamond/.

Formation Evaluation with Pre-Digital Well Logs covers the practical use of legacy materials for formation evaluation using wireline logging equipment from 1927 until the introduction of digital logging in the 1960s and ‘70s. The book provides powerful interpretation techniques that can be applied today when an analyst is faced with a drawer full of old “E logs." It arms the engineer, geologist and petrophysicist with the tools needed to profitably plan re-completions or in-fill drilling in old fields that may have been acquired for modern deeper and/or horizontal drilling.
Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder

Anthony W. Bateman; Roy Krawitz

Oxford University Press
2013
nidottu
Over the past two decades considerable progress has been made in developing specialist psychosocial treatments for borderline personality disorder (BPD), yet the majority of people with BPD receive treatment within generalist mental health services, rather than specialist treatment centres. This is a book for general mental health professionals who treat people with borderline personality disorder (BPD). It offers practical guidance on how to help people with BPD with advice based on research evidence. After a discussion of the symptoms of BPD, the authors review all the generalist treatment interventions that have resulted in good outcomes in randomised controlled trials, when compared with specialist treatments, and summarise the effective components of these interventions. The treatment strategies are organised into a structured approach called Structured Clinical Management (SCM), which can be delivered by general mental health professionals without extensive additional training. The heart of the book outlines the principles underpinning SCM and offers a step-by-step guide to the clinical intervention. Practitioners can learn the interventions easily and develop more confidence in treating people with BPD. In addition, a chapter is devoted to how to help families - an issue commonly neglected when treating patients with BPD. Finally the authors discuss the top 10 strategies for delivering treatment and outline how the general mental health clinician can deliver these strategies competently.

The Transformative Potential of Participatory Budgeting
In this book, George Robert Bateman, Jr. presents a philosophical examination of the potential benefits of participatory budgeting (PB), with recommendations of how they might be realized. The work of social philosophers like Thomas Jefferson, John Dewey, Robert Putnam are studied to better understand the potential benefits and their effect on individuals and communities. Using social provisioning and John Fagg Foster’s theories of instrumental value and institutional adjustment, Bateman demonstrates how participatory budgeting in New York City (PBNYC) can realize its full potential and transform individual participants into their better selves and also transform their communities. This transformation can occur when participants are able to make decisions about things that matter in their lives. As more of us become empowered and actively engaged in deliberations concerning local economic/political issues the more we will experience public happiness, greater understanding of others, greater development of our morality, and an increased sense of belonging. The Transformative Potential of Participatory Budgeting will be of great interest to scholars in the fields of normative political theory, political philosophy, local politics, heterodox economics, institutional economics, political sociology, urban sociology, and community sociology.

What is psychoanalysis? Is it relevant to today’s mental health crisis? How can psychoanalysis help people suffering from psychological distress and illness? This vital new book examines how psychoanalysis has changed since its inception, and how it has adapted to the needs and concerns of 21st-century mental health professionals and patients. The first part of this book provides a concise and unbiased account of the origins of psychoanalysis, and the theories which characterise the main post-Freudian schools – neo-Freudian, Kleinian, interpersonal, self-psychological, Lacanian – and the ways in which they agree and diverge. The second part uses clinical illustrations to examine the practicalities of psychoanalytic technique in the consulting room – assessment, free association, dream analysis, transference, and counter-transference. Whatever their allegiance or role, mental health professionals – psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, child mental health professionals, mental health nurses – need to be conversant with the strengths, relevance, and limitations of the psychoanalytic approach. This book provides an indispensable, up-to-date, and accessible account of psychoanalysis today. Shaped throughout by considering the viewpoint of an interested 21st-century reader, it is of great interest to psychoanalysts and related mental health professionals, as well as students and all those interested in the treatment of mental health.

A History of Youth Justice

A History of Youth Justice

A History of Youth Justice charts the development of juvenile justice in England and Wales from the time of its earliest distinctions from adult justice. It explores the major trends across political generations, contextualised by political pressures, personalities, events and ideologies driving change. The author also details the rise and fall of each innovation, from the prison hulks to boot camps, examining their impetus, implementation and problems. The book highlights recurring issues in the formation and implementation of interventions with young offenders. It notes the consistencies in hopes and fears from policies, and the repeated problems and mistakes. Furthermore the book relates these patterns to the most recent generation of youth justice interventions – showing how we are still repeating hopes and mistakes from the past. The author asks how much this history can tell us about ‘what works’ in youth justice provision and what has repeatedly not worked. The book presents a typical model of policy development and uses this to predict the pitfalls in current and future developments. The conclusions challenge policymakers to learn key lessons from the past for the success of youth justice in the future.

Partial Differential Equations of Mathematical Physics

H. Bateman

Cambridge University Press

pokkari
Harry Bateman (1882–1946) was an esteemed mathematician particularly known for his work on special functions and partial differential equations. This book, first published in 1932, has been reprinted many times and is a classic example of Bateman's work. Partial Differential Equations of Mathematical Physics was developed chiefly with the aim of obtaining exact analytical expressions for the solution of the boundary problems of mathematical physics.

Lean thinking is a powerful method that allows organizations to improve the productivity, efficiency and quality of their products or services. Achieving these benefits requires good teamwork, clear communication, intelligent use of resources and a commitment to continuous improvement. This book shows how lean thinking can be applied in practice, highlighting the key challenges and pitfalls. The authors, based at a leading centre for lean enterprise research, begin with an overview of the theory of lean thinking. They then explain the core tools and techniques and show how they can be applied successfully. The detailed implementation of lean thinking is illustrated by several case studies, from a range of industries, in which the authors had unprecedented access to the management teams. With its focus on implementation and practical solutions, this book will appeal to managers at all levels, as well as to business students and researchers in lean thinking.
