C.S. Lewis: A Short Introduction

C.S. Lewis: A Short Introduction

Philip Vander Elst

C.S. Lewis (1898-1953) was the most talented and lucid apologist for Christianity that the last century produced. In essays, critical studies, poems, novels and works of autobiography, he turned his formidable literary gifts to the task of re-presenting the Christian view of human destiny to a world bewildered by scientific materialism. He did not shrik the real difficulties that Christian belief encounters, nor did he downplay the cost of faith in an age of self-indulgence. Nevertheless, the radiant happiness and good sense that shine through his prose have never ceased to find new and eager readers, and his books remain part of the canonical wisdom of our culture. Philip Van der Elst surveys the whole of Lewis's vast output and gives a clear and illuminating summary of his stance towards the outstanding questions of our civilisation. Setting the writings within the context of Lewis's own painful life and striking conversion, he shows the enduring importance of a thinker whose vision of modern life was both comprehensive and profoundly optimistic. Van der Elst's book provides a lucid and stimulating introduction; for those already familiar with Lewis's writings it offers a challenging analysis of their meaning and of the continuous thread of argument which runs all through their various themes. An indispensable guide to an indispensable thinker. Philip Van der Elst's previous book, Resisting Leviathan: The Case Against a European State, was published by Claridge Press (Continuum) in 1991.

How unfair", wrote one national newspaper in 1951, 'that accomplishments enough to satisfy the pride of six men should be united in Mr Day-Lewis.' Poet, translator of classical texts, novelist, detective writer (under the pen-name Nicholas Blake), performer and, at that time, Professor of Poetry at Oxford, C. Day-Lewis had many careers all at once. This first authorised biography tells the private story behind the many headlines that this handsome, charming Anglo-Irish Poet Laureate generated in his lifetime. With unparalleled access to Day-Lewis' archives and the recollections of first-hand witnesses, Peter Stanford traces the link between life and art to reassess the work of a poet lauded in his lifetime but whose literary reputation has latterly become a matter of controversy, with Westminster Abbey refusing him the place in Poets' Corner traditionally allotted to Poets Laureate. Day-Lewis first made his name as one of the 'poets of the thirties', launching a communist-influenced poetic revolution alongside WH Auden and Stephen Spender that aspired to spark wholesale political change to face down fascism. In the 1940s, 'Red Cecil', as he had become known, broke with communism and Auden and went on to produce some of his most popular and enduring verse, prompted by his long love affair with the novelist Rosamond Lehmann. Torn between her and his wife, he reflected on his double life in verse and became for some the supreme poet of the divided heart. Later, with his second wife, the actress Jill Balcon, he promoted poetry with a series of popular recitals and radio and television programmes. Together, they had two children, Tamasin and Daniel, later an Oscar-winning actor. Day-Lewis was always pulled between a fulfilling domestic life and a restless desire to explore. His travels, exploration of his Irish roots and his infidelities are all part of the rich and many-faceted life that Peter Stanford describes. It is, however, as a poet that he is best remembered and the poetry itself, often autobiographical, forms an integral part of this intriguing and long-overdue biography.

C. S. Lewis's Dangerous Idea: In Defense of the Argument from Reason
Who ought to hold claim to the more dangerous idea-Charles Darwin or C. S. Lewis? Daniel Dennett argued for Darwin in Darwin's Dangerous Idea. Offering careful, able development of Lewis's thought, Victor Reppert now champions C. S. Lewis, demonstrating that Lewis's "argument from reason" can bear up under the weight of the most serious philosophical attacks.

There can be many obstacles to faith. As Art Lindsley says, Lewis knew what it was like not to believe. He struggled with many doubts along the way to faith. Since he was an ardent atheist until age thirty-one, Lewis's experience and education prepared him to understand firsthand the most common arguments against Christianity. As a scholar and teacher of literature at Oxford, Lewis confronted many questions: Aren't all religions just humanly invented myths? Doesn't evil in the world indicate an absence of any personal or loving God? Why should what is true for one person be true for me, especially when it comes to religion? How can anyone claim that one religion is right? Why follow Jesus if he was just another good moral teacher? This book provides a readable introduction to Lewis's reflections on these and other objections to belief in Jesus Christ and the compelling reasons why Lewis came to affirm the truth of Christianity. Art Lindsley is a helpful and reliable guide to the voluminous and sometimes challenging writings of Lewis for both seekers and those who want to grasp their own faith more deeply.
