Despite the celebrated history of not-for-profit institutions of higher education, today more than 2 million students are enrolled in for-profit colleges such as ITT Technical Institute, the University of Phoenix, and others. Yet little is known about why for-profits have expanded so quickly and even less about how the power and influence of this big-money industry impact individual lives. Lower Ed, the first book to link the rapid expansion of for-profit degrees to America's increasing inequality, reveals the story of an industry that exploits aspirations.

Father Ed is the first biography of Father Edward Dowling, SJ, whose guidance transformed Alcoholics Anonymous founder Bill Wilson's life and deepened the spirituality of the twelve-step movement. Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson has one of the greatest legacies of any person of modern times. Time magazine placed him at No. 20 on its list of the most important people of the 20th century. But whenever Wilson himself had the opportunity to name the greatest human being he had ever met, he had but one answer: Father Edward Dowling, SJ Jesuit Father Ed Dowling (1898-1960) rescued Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson from debilitating depression and gave him the spiritual guidance he needed to bring AA to international prominence. Although not an alcoholic himself, he came to devote his ministry to helping people in recovery--not only alcoholics but also people in troubled marriages (as a co-founder of the Cana Conference) and those suffering from nervous disorders (as an early champion of Recovery, Inc., now known as Recovery International). But he was also a champion of civil rights and other social-justice issues, and his pastoral interests presaged the priorities of the Church under Pope Francis.

A sci-fi thriller about a next-gen form of psychiatry: 'subliminal hitmen' injected into your mind who hunt down the demons that haunt you. Ex-military sharpshooter Colin McClure is Mezign Corp's most recent recruit for the still-experimental (and often deadly) job of subliminal hitman. McClure is the perfect candidate for two reasons: a) he's a killing machine, and b) he lost his legs in the war, so subliminal-ops are his only way to see any action. But he's also a dangerous candidate for one reason unknown to Mezign: Colin's true motive is to enter the mind of his catatonic daughter and bring her out of a coma. Collects issues 1-5.

At the time he met Marjorie, Ed Osler was at the end of his "dating rope." He was tired of dating, disgusted with who he was meeting, and wondered if he would ever meet his "special someone." He met Marjorie online-on a dating site that allowed him to express how he felt in words and in poetry. They emailed each other for close to three weeks before they actually met. By the time they had their first date, they had developed a relatively strong friendship. When they finally met for their dinner date, Marjorie in person was no different than the woman he was emailing. The evening's date was effortless. Everything flowed so easily. By the time the date ended Ed was sad, for he wondered if they would ever have a second date. Love-call it karma or fate or simply an emotional connection-does exist-even in this day and age. Dating is not difficult as long as both parties remain open and honest with their feelings and hold fast that unconditional love does exist. It is real and special. We experience happy emotions and sad emotions and as long as we retain our sense of humor, we will find that special someone to spend our life with. About the AuthorBorn and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Edward L. Osler is the only adult child of Alvin and Ruth Osler. Osler loves to write poetry and currently lives in Delray Beach, Florida.

In Chasing Ed: Was Major General Edward G. Lansdale the Mastermind of the JFK Assassination?, Greg Lavin "follows the money" in conjunction with the politics of the time to reveal Ed Lansdale's alleged involvement in the assassination of John F. Kennedy.Chasing Ed details author Greg Lavin's experiences with Ed Lansdale. Lavin studied Ed in graduate school at Cornell, met him in 1973, and kept in contact with him until Ed died in 1987. Letters from their correspondence can be found in the appendix of this book. Throughout their close acquaintance, Lavin repeatedly questioned Ed on a number of issues, focusing mainly on his use of finances to build modern Asian states. Ed built governments in the Philippines and South Vietnam and introduced the concept of "counter insurgency" in dealing with unfriendly Communist nations. After Ed died, Lavin discovered that as an OSS agent in World War II in the Philippines, Ed had discovered $1.2 trillion in gold, platinum, and gems taken from the Chinese by the Japanese. President Truman declared the cache a "state secret," and Ed and the intelligence community were granted control of the funds free from Congressional oversight. As Ed's career progressed in the Pentagon, he became a general officer and expert in "special operations" including assassinations. Such particularly sensitive matters required maintaining ongoing "mythologies" to hide the truth behind the operations. Lavin reveals that Ed had sufficient resources to "buy off" inconvenient opponents and could lay false stories to continue sidestepping responsibility for one particular assassination-that of President John F. Kennedy.

It's no secret that the world of higher education in the U.S. is in trouble. It faces image problems, some of the worst financial pressures ever, political turmoil in at least half the states in our country, and much more. Not all these challenges are of academia's own making, but many are. Too many silos, deep roots in tradition, and confused institutional missions all contribute to the state of affairs. Chapter by chapter the author lays bare what he regards as the most consequential matters confronting our higher education enterprise today. These include everything from enrollment volatility and decline to the impact of a culture war on the DEI movement, dim prospects for improved operational funding, growing partisanship of university trustees and system boards, the impacts of heavy reliance on contingent faculty, increasingly unattractive and non-competitive faculty salaries, and institutional missions that have strayed or enlarged, with unintended consequences. As exhausting as this short list is, it covers only part of the territory. Colleges and universities of all stripes are affected, from community and technical colleges to four-year and graduate colleges and universities - both private and public. While there is no silver bullet at the ready, the author outlines a rough blueprint for the kinds of initiatives and strategies needed to tackle the most consequential challenges we face today. For many a school, survival is truly at stake, but achieving a turnaround is possible only if their leaders have the vision and courage to guide their institutions in the direction of life-changing innovation and renewal.
Vita Ed Opere Di Santa Caterina Da Genova

Robert Gluck

New York Review Books

A moving memoir about love, AIDS, grief, and memory by one of the most adventurous writers to come out of San Francisco's LGBTQ+ scene. "I was a writer, but not the writer I needed to be. For that I had to become a different person," Robert Gl ck, widely acclaimed as a novelist and as a theorist of "the new narrative," recently told the Paris Review, in which a section of About Ed has appeared. About Ed is Gl ck's portrait of the artist Ed Aulerich-Sugai, his sometime lover, met in the seventies in San Francisco, when gay life emerged unabashedly from the closet. "I wanted to find in Ed something to latch on to that was outside my egotism and fear, my threadbare relation to the world--a leap through Ed into lyric time," Gl ck has said, and in this book that is both "a novel and my version of an AIDS memoir" he wanted to capture the full range of his feelings for Ed: "estranged from Ed, bored by him, moved by him." It is a book about the life they lived together--art and writing and family and sex and death--and, composed over many decades, it is also a book about how the past continues to change in memory and to charge the present. "What is the right question to ask about a life?" Gl ck asks, describing About Ed as a "collaborative project," since "Ed helped me write this book." Ed gave him "notes to fashion a chapter about the day he was diagnosed so I could describe his experience from the inside," and "after Ed died, Daniel, Ed's partner, lent me Ed's dream journals. . . . He started writing them in 1970, the year that we met. We both used his journals, not as puzzles to solve the truth of a self but as a commons producing images that we harvested for paintings and poems. And fifty years later, there I was reading and copying out and running away from his dreams. Are they a condensed version of Ed? Shorthand? Distillation? Is he knowable and unknowable in the same degree sleeping or waking?" About Ed is a challenging and beautiful book by one of America's finest and most adventurous writers.

Four guys. Constant moaning. And a revolving door across the college suite I somehow ended up in because my first name is Shawn. They don't discriminate. Girls. Guys. Grandmas. Plants (okay maybe not plants) all walks of life stroll in stressed to the brim, and leave so satisfied I'm wondering what sort of talents lie behind that door. My roommate calls them the pleasure ponies. But the rest of the college campus? They just call them the new face of Wingmen Inc. A paid for relationship service that makes big promises. Breakup? They'll glue you back together again. Depressed? They have the magic pill. Lonely? Just spend a few minutes while they rub you down and you'll forget all about it. And broken hearts? Well, that's their specialty. They'll fix you. For a price… I swore I wouldn't get involved. But apparently they like a challenge, and a girl who doesn't put up with their BS is basically like waving a red flag in front of a bull. They. All. Charged. But one holds my attention above the rest. Knox Turner looks like a Viking — and getting pillaged is starting to look more appealing by the day. Though he's hiding something — all of them are. And the closer I get. The more I realize that some things are left better in the past. You've read reverse harem books before — but you've never read one like this. It's not what you think, or is it? Dive in and find out… Knox, Leo, Finn, and Slater are waiting, and they aren't patient men. Welcome to the new face of Wingmen Inc — You're welcome.

Un dramma sociale che ha interessato circa il sette per cento delle nascite, nell'Ottocento ed anche nei cinque secoli precedenti, sia pure con diverse percentuali.
