The First Lady of World War II: Eleanor Roosevelt's Daring Journey to the Frontlines and Back
The first book to tell the full story of Eleanor Roosevelt's unprecedented and courageous trip to the Pacific Theater during World War II.On August 27, 1943, news broke in the United States that First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was on the other side of the world. A closely guarded secret, she had left San Francisco aboard a military transport plane headed for the South Pacific to support and report the troops on WW2's front lines. Americans had believed she was secluded at home.As Allied forces battled the Japanese for control of the region, Eleanor was there on the frontlines, spending five weeks traveling, on a mission as First Lady of the United States to experience what our servicemen were experiencing... and report back home."The most remarkable journey any president's wife has ever made."--Washington Times-Herald, September 28, 1943"Mrs. Roosevelt's sudden appearance in New Zealand well deserves the attention it is receiving. This is the farthest and most unexpected junket of a First Lady whose love of getting about is legendary."--Detroit Free Press, August 28, 1943"By a happy chance for Australia, this famous lady's taste for getting about, her habit of seeing for herself what is going on in the world, and, most of all, her deep concern for the welfare of the fighting men of her beloved country, have brought her on the longest journey of them all--across the wide, war-clouded Pacific."--Sydney Morning Herald, September 4, 1943"No other U.S. mother had seen so much of the panorama of the war, had been closer to the sweat and boredom, the suffering."--Time, October 4, 1943

A Pre-Raphaelite Journey: The Art of Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale

Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale (1872-1945) was an accomplished painter, illustrator and designer whose artistic life bridged the Victorian and modern worlds. Her work was much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite artists whose love of detail, colour, symbolism, storytelling and nature was so hugely influential on mid Victorian Britain. Eleanor’s own work carried the Pre-Raphaelite style forward into the 20th century. Indeed she became known as ‘the last Pre-Raphaelite’. Despite her huge popularity in her own time, Eleanor’s work has been neglected since her death in 1945. This book is the first monograph on the artist. It is the result of extensive research by Pamela Gerrish Nunn, whose work on Pre-Raphaelite women artists has done so much to re-assess the art history of the Victorian period. Here, the author takes us on a journey through Eleanor’s training, career and achievements to re-establish her as an important and fascinating figure in the history of Pre-Raphaelite art. Published by Liverpool University Press with National Museums Liverpool.
Damsels and Demons: The Glorious Victories of Eleanor MacLeod Book Three
Her wild honeymoon is only halfway over. Eleanor has already defeated a plethora of spies and fools. She's overcome the most uncomfortable romantic challenges any girl could face on her honeymoon, settling into the odd patterns required to be the wife of a beautiful, tormented, half-human god. What could possibly go wrong? As Eleanor reaches the shores of her husband's beloved native home, she realizes quickly that she is a pawn in a much greater game than she, or any of her divine allies, ever realized. Now that she's finally resigned herself to a life of supporting the powerful, complicated beings around her, will she buckle under the pressure of her own unexpected divine destiny?THE GLORIOUS VICTORIES OF ELEANOR MACLEOD is an art deco fantasy epic that explores feminine strength, the meaning of life and death, and the nature of good and evil. Arranged as five books, each with its own genre, the series follows the life of a vivacious, war-veteran nurse, Eleanor MacLeod, as she crosses paths with a crew of powerful beings and is brought into their fold with divine secrets she cannot reveal, especially to her new half-human husband. Set in the height of the hopeful, scarred, bacchanalian 1920s, Eleanor's story is a poignant yet lighthearted exploration of the ripples of impact created by an exceptionally powerful woman making her imperfect way in the world. DAMSELS AND DEMONS, a modern fairy tale punctuated by mystery and romance, is the third book of the five book series. As much about the inevitable cycles of change and rebirth as they are about the cozy comfort of a life filled with unconditional love, all five books of the series were published at once in August 2019 for consideration in the KindleStorytellerUK contest. They are intended to be read in order as one continuous saga.

Patches and the Baby Bunny: An Eleanor Roosevelt Story

A number of years ago, I spied my loving calico cat named Patches carrying around a baby bunny, just as she would carry a kitten. It soon became apparent that she was attempting to care for the bunny, whose mother had probably fallen victim to a fox. A friend suggested that the tale would make a good children's story, and here it is. Set in one of my favorite places, the site of the Franklin Roosevelt Presidential Library, and featuring my heroine, Eleanor Roosevelt, Patches manages to raise the bunny in spite of a harrowing adventure or two. The story is aimed for children two years and up.
The Daughters of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine: A Comparative Study of Twelfth-Century Royal Women
The three daughters of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine all undertook exogamous marriages which cemented dynastic alliances and furthered the political and diplomatic ambitions of their parents and their spouses. It might be expected that the choices made by Matilda, Leonor, and Joanna with regard to religious patronage and dynastic commemoration would follow the customs and patterns of their marital families, yet in many cases these choices appear to have been strongly influenced by ties to their natal family. Their involvement in the burgeoning cult of Thomas Becket, their patronage of Fontevrault Abbey, the names they gave to their children, and the ways in which they were buried, suggests that all three women were able, to varying degrees, to transplant Angevin family customs to their marital lands. By examining the childhoods, marriages, and programmes of patronage and commemoration of Matilda, Leonor and Joanna, this monograph compares and contrasts the experiences of three high-profile twelfth-century royal women, and advances the hypothesis that there may have been stronger emotional ties within the Angevin dynasty than has previously been allowed for.

Dr. Eleanor`s Book of Common Spiders

Spiders have a problem, and it's us. Despite their magnificent talents for crafting webs, capturing mosquitoes, and camouflage, for millennia arachnophobia has hampered our ability to appreciate these eight-legged and -eyed marvels. No longer! In this witty, accessible, and beautifully illustrated guide, Eleanor Spicer Rice and Christopher M. Buddle metamorphose creepy-crawly revulsion into spider wonder. Emerging from ambitious citizen science project Your Wild Life (an initiative based at North Carolina State University), Dr. Eleanor's Book of Spiders with Chris Buddle provides an eye-opening arachnological overview of the natural history of species most noted by project participants, showcasing some of the fascinating spiders found in our attics and tents, front lawns and forests and even introducing us to spiders that fish. Exploring species from the tiny (but gymnastic) zebra jumping spider to the naturally shy and woefully misunderstood black widow, this guide will be a tremendous resource for teachers, students, and scientists alike. But more than this, it will transform the way we perceive the environment around us by deepening our understanding of its littlest inhabitants, inspiring all of us to find our inner naturalist, get outside, and crawl across the dirt magnifying glass in hand.

Words and Things: Cognitive Neuropsychological Studies in Tribute to Eleanor M. Saffran
To understand mental function, we need to uncover the representations and processes underlying our ability to comprehend and to produce words, sentences, numbers and objects (or pictures of them). The unique contribution of the field of cognitive neuropsychology is the investigation of these representations and processes in individuals who have sustained selective brain damage. Indeed, studies of such individuals provide a window into the mental system and allow us to explore the functional architecture that is necessary and sufficient for cognition. This special issue of Cognitive Neuropsychology is a collection of papers that exemplifies this type of cognitive neuropsychology research. The special issue is designed to honour and pay tribute to Eleanor M. Saffran, one of the pioneers of this discipline, who adopted this approach in her wide-ranging investigations of individuals with cognitive impairment following brain damage. The papers included in this collection all explore issues concerning behavioural and neural mechanisms mediating cognition and are divided into four separate sections. Two of these focus on language, with the emphasis of the first on single word recognition and the second on processes that are invoked beyond the single word level. Conceptual and semantic processes are covered in a third section and the final section is concerned with issues related to more peripheral processes, which, when impaired, give rise to alexia, agnosia and/or agraphia. This extensive collection of papers represents a comprehensive overview of the current state of the field and the papers elucidate the most recent findings in the domain of cognitive neuropsychology.
