Underserved Populations in Science Education: Enhancement Through Learning Community Participation A positive relationship between college anatomy students' achievement and academic language proficiency in the context of a learning community was studied. For many students the barrier to learning science is language. It was determined that a relationship exists between low academic language proficiency and lack of success among students, in particular failure among at-risk minority and language- minority students. The study involved students of Anatomy classes at a community college in Central California having a high percentage of culturally and linguistically diverse students. Students from each semester participated in the academic language proficiency and science achievement studies. A number of students enrolled in a Learning Community (LC) that included instruction in academic language in the context of the anatomy course content. Other students also participated in Peer-led Support (PLS) sessions. Several participated in a textbook use study and in a Cooperative-Learning (CL) study.

Pour de nombreux tudiants, l'obstacle l'apprentissage des sciences est la langue. Il a t d termin qu'il existe une relation entre une faible ma trise de la langue acad mique et le manque de r ussite des tudiants, en particulier l' chec chez les tudiants des minorit s risque et des minorit s linguistiques. L' tude a port sur les tudiants des classes d'anatomie d'un community college de Californie centrale ayant un pourcentage lev d' tudiants de diverses cultures et langues. Les tudiants de chaque semestre ont particip aux tudes sur les comp tences linguistiques et les r sultats scientifiques. Un certain nombre d' tudiants se sont inscrits dans une communaut d'apprentissage (Learning Community - LC) qui comprenait un enseignement de la langue acad mique dans le contexte du contenu du cours d'anatomie. D'autres tudiants ont galement particip des sessions de soutien par les pairs (PLS). Plusieurs ont particip une tude sur l'utilisation des manuels scolaires et une tude sur l'apprentissage coop ratif (CL).

Foi determinado que existe uma rela o entre a baixa profici ncia lingu stica acad mica e a falta de sucesso entre os estudantes, em particular o fracasso entre os estudantes de minorias em risco e os estudantes de minorias lingu sticas. O estudo envolveu estudantes de aulas de Anatomia numa faculdade comunit ria na Calif rnia Central, tendo uma elevada percentagem de estudantes cultural e linguisticamente diversificados. Os estudantes de cada semestre participaram nos estudos acad micos de profici ncia lingu stica e de realiza o cient fica. V rios estudantes matriculados numa Comunidade de Aprendizagem (LC) que inclu a instru o em l ngua acad mica no contexto do conte do do curso de anatomia. Outros estudantes tamb m participaram em sess es de Apoio Liderado por Pares (PLS). V rios participaram num estudo de utiliza o de manuais escolares e num estudo Cooperative-Learning (CL).

Most of the applications on EZT algorithm were applied on wavelet transformation. In the last ten years, the contourlet transformation has shown its higher efficiency compared to the wavelet transformation as it is able to deal with multidirections instead of the vertical and horizontal directions covered by the wavelet transformation.In the present research, the contourlet coefficient has been adopted as an input to the EZT (which are normally a wavelet coefficient). Arranging the contourlet coefficient to be studied as an input to EZT, the result of adopting modified contourlet coefficient has been studied on two parameters, namely the file size and threshold value, and also been tested by evaluating three factors, viz. correlation, MSE and PSNR.Studying the effect of the contourlet coefficient to see which of them have the high effects and the effect of the levels of composition. The result shows that the high components of the coefficient have low effect with high compression ratio in addition to high correlation factor.
