The Clerkenwell Riot

The Clerkenwell Riot

Gavin Thurston

TAYLOR FRANCIS LTD

nidottu
This book, first published in 1967, examines the implications of a now-forgotten minor riot that occurred in 1833, a turbulent year with the working classes striving for recognition in a changing social order. A political meeting in London had been declared illegal, the police breaking up the crowd were met with resistance, and in the fracas a policeman was stabbed to death. A bad-tempered inquest followed, at which the jury returned a verdict of justified killing – for which a section of the public hailed them as heroes. This analysis sets the crime and verdict against the political protests of the time.

The Routledge Handbook to the Music of Alfred Schnittke
The Routledge Handbook to the Music of Alfred Schnittke is a comprehensive study of the work of one of the most important Russian composers of the late 20th century. Each piece is discussed in detail, with particular attention to the composer’s groundbreaking polystylism, as well as his unique approach to musical symbolism and his deep engagement with Christian themes. This is the first publication to look at Schnittke’s output in its entirety, and for most works it represents either the first ever published analysis or the first in a language other than Russian. The volume presents new research from the Ivashkin-Schnittke Archive at Goldsmiths, University of London and the collection of Schnittke’s compositional sketches at the Julliard Library in New York. It also draws on the substantial research on Schnittke’s music published in the Russian language. Including a work list and bibliography of primary and secondary sources, this is an essential reference for all those interested in Russian music, 20th-century music and performance studies.
Media Piracy in the Cultural Economy

Media Piracy in the Cultural Economy

Gavin Mueller

TAYLOR FRANCIS LTD

nidottu
This book takes a Marxist approach to the study of media piracy – the production, distribution, and consumption of media texts in violation of intellectual property laws – to examine its place as an endemic feature of the cultural economy since the rise of the Internet. The author explores media piracy not in terms of its moral or legal failings, or as the inevitable by-product of digital technologies, but as a symptom of a much larger restructuring of cultural labor in the era of the Internet: labor that is digital, entrepreneurial, informal, and even illegal, and increasingly politicized. Sketching the contours of this new political economy while engaging with theories of digital media, both critical and celebratory, Mueller reveals piracy as a submerged social history of the digital world, and potentially the key to its political reimagining. This significant contribution to the study of piracy and digital culture will be vital reading for scholars and students of critical media studies, cultural studies, political theory, or digital humanities, and particularly those researching media piracy, digital labor, the digital economy, and Marxist theory.
Whole Onflow

This book describes ‘whole onflow’ which is, at once, the emergence and becoming of the entirety of the world/universe and any actual, unique position whatsoever in it ‘now’. A physical plane and self-organizing process that owes its energy to the big bang; in our region it now unfolding the infinitely complex and varied world we engage, contribute to and experienceThere have been many academic ideas on the nature of emergence and becoming in the world, including ideas on the world’s overall emergence and becoming. In this book we extend some of these ideas to conceptualise a physical plane incorporating all possible positions and local variability – all geographies - what we refer to as ‘whole onflow’. We answer some key questions including: What is the processual nature of whole onflow through which the world emerges and becomes in the moment? How might thinking in terms of whole onflow expand our ideas on the world’s productions from health, to aging to capitalism and beyond? How might this help us get to grips with today’s kinetic, energy-dependent, multi-textured, and process-ignorant world? The book lays out the broad theoretical landscape. It demonstrates how principles and processes established by physics and cosmology might be combined with principles and processes conveyed by social theory to describe the world in whole onflow.Dealing then with the very origins of all that is, and all that is social, the book is core reading for social scientists who like to think fundamentally. It is very much a speculative and provocative piece, but a necessary one, and will be of particular interest to those studying the world through poststructuralist, posthumanist, new materialist and non-representational theoretical lenses. Moving forward, certain scholars might follow the specific points of departure and pathways the book signposts. Others might choose to tread the new ground the book opens-up in their own ways.

First published in 1951, My Dear Holmes is a biography of Sherlock Holmes, which originated from the author’s re-reading of the Sherlock Holmes stories to his daughter, supplies answers to mysteries such as when was Holmes born? Which was his university? How many times was Watson married and in what years? Why did he leave Baker Street without a word of explanation in 1896? Why did the two Moriarty brothers have the same Christian name? Why were there apparently different cases all known as "the Second Stain"? The author takes the sixty cases narrated by Watson, many of which are undated, deduces the year in each case, and weaves the whole into a single continuous story, with the intention of filling the gaps in our knowledge of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. To those who are partial to the London of gaslight, hansom cabs, feather boas and income tax at one shilling and twopence in the pound, this book can be recommended.

Spatio-Temporal Methods in Environmental Epidemiology with R, like its First Edition, explores the interface between environmental epidemiology and spatio-temporal modeling. It links recent developments in spatio-temporal theory with epidemiological applications. Drawing on real-life problems, it shows how recent advances in methodology can assess the health risks associated with environmental hazards. The book's clear guidelines enable the implementation of the methodology and estimation of risks in practice.New additions to the Second Edition include: a thorough exploration of the underlying concepts behind knowledge discovery through data; a new chapter on extracting information from data using R and the tidyverse; additional material on methods for Bayesian computation, including the use of NIMBLE and Stan; new methods for performing spatio-temporal analysis and an updated chapter containing further topics. Throughout the book there are new examples, and the presentation of R code for examples has been extended. Along with these additions, the book now has a GitHub site (https://spacetime-environ.github.io/stepi2) that contains data, code and further worked examples.Features:• Explores the interface between environmental epidemiology and spatio-temporal modeling• Incorporates examples that show how spatio-temporal methodology can inform societal concerns about the effects of environmental hazards on health• Uses a Bayesian foundation on which to build an integrated approach to spatio-temporal modeling and environmental epidemiology• Discusses data analysis and topics such as data visualization, mapping, wrangling and analysis• Shows how to design networks for monitoring hazardous environmental processes and the ill effects of preferential sampling• Through the listing and application of code, shows the power of R, tidyverse, NIMBLE and Stan and other modern tools in performing complex data analysis and modelingRepresenting a continuing important direction in environmental epidemiology, this book – in full color throughout – underscores the increasing need to consider dependencies in both space and time when modeling epidemiological data. Readers will learn how to identify and model patterns in spatio-temporal data and how to exploit dependencies over space and time to reduce bias and inefficiency when estimating risks to health.
Trade Fetishism

Trade Fetishism

Gavin Fridell; Patrick Clark

TAYLOR FRANCIS LTD

Trade Fetishism argues that ‘trade’ not only meets material goals, but simultaneously works as a fantasy that seeks to satisfy and sooth our unconscious desires and anxieties. Countering the idea that trade is driven ultimately by rational economic, political, and strategic logics, it argues that non-rational beliefs and unconscious desires are equally motivating in our obsession with trade and its promises of enjoyment. Reassessing trade and trade politics, Fridell and Clark make a distinct contribution through systematic case studies that explore trade agreements in North America, between Europe and the Caribbean, and at the World Trade Organization. Drawing on case study research on specific trade agreements and trade justice movements, and engaging with a wide range of thinking about trade - from neoclassical economics and international law, to Marxist, feminist, postmodern and other critical approaches – the book contends that trade and trade agreements are increasingly ‘fetishized’: offered up as near-magical objects that meet our desires, soothe our anxieties, and offer simple solutions to complex problems, even if they perpetually disappoint. An exploration of the desires and anxieties embedded in the widespread and enduring faith in global trade and free trade - a faith that persists despite abundant contradictions, gaps, and injustices – Trade Fetishism will appeal to scholars of sociology, social and political theory and economics with interest in international trade and political economy.

The Concept of Mind in Hindu Tantra

The Concept of Mind in Hindu Tantra

Gavin Flood

TAYLOR FRANCIS LTD
2024
sidottu
This book presents an account of the concept of mind in Hindu Tantra through a study of religious and philosophical texts in the medieval period.Offering an understanding on how the mind is conceptualized both as that which keeps a person bound to the cycle of reincarnation and as having transformative potential in allowing a person to achieve liberation or salvation, this book examines mostly previously untranslated sources. It shows how there are different understandings of the mind that relate to different ideas of redemption. The main tantric tradition, the Saiva Siddhanta, adopts a model of mind from Yoga in which the wandering mind keeps us trapped, whereas the nondualist Saiva tradition, sometimes called ‘Kashmir’ Saivism, sees the mind as inherently pure and free. The book traces a history of the concept of mind from early sources, especially Buddhism, through to the tantric medieval period, and ending with the eighteenth century. The author shows how the concept changes and what is retained. A comparison of the tantric ideas of mind with those of some European philosophy – notably Descartes’ dualism and German idealism’s non-dualism – sharpens the concept of mind in the tantric tradition.A historical and philosophical study of key ideas in the tantric traditions, this book will be of interest to researchers in the field of Religious Studies, Asian Religion, Hindu Studies, Indian philosophy, and comparative philosophy.

Teaching the Humanities in a Fractious World

Teaching the Humanities in a Fractious World

Gavin Kitching

TAYLOR FRANCIS LTD
2025
sidottu
This book confronts an ever more popular suspicion – that a university education in the humanities and social sciences is an ‘elitist’ indoctrination into ‘leftist’ or ‘liberal’ views. Having taught them for nearly 40 years, Gavin Kitching shows that, on the contrary, studying these subjects leads one to question all political and social views (left-wing, right-wing, ‘elite’, ‘popular’, religious, secular) and to be sceptical of all the beliefs about human identity (whether racial, gender, national, or class) to which they give rise. The book is divided into 34 brief sections which can be read as stand-alone discussions of some topic or as sequential steps in an argument. This modular structure makes it an excellent teaching text for students. It is written in an accessible, even colloquial, style which gives it the broadest possible appeal, and its arguments are illustrated by a host of ‘everyday’ linguistic, sociological and psychological examples. These not only enliven the book but demonstrate that philosophical ideas are most persuasive when used to illuminate non-philosophical matters. Accordingly, Teaching the Humanities… explores such issues as the climate crisis; individualism and postmodernism; nationalism; globalisation and its relationship to economic inequality and political polarisation; all of which are currently the subject of fierce debate inside and outside the university.
