Very little has been written about prison staff. They have been discussed only in relation to achieving reformative and rehabilitative goals, and are frequently criticized for opposing these goals. It is natural that interest should be concentrated on the prisoner community, but the prison staff must also be examined if prisons are to be fully understood. This book sets out to demonstrate that the central figure in any prison system is the basic grade uniformed officer and that the collective views of officers have a direct and supreme impact on the working of the system.Dr Thomas discusses the role of the prison officer in the English prison system, a highly centralized organization between the years 1850 to 1970. The definition of new organizational tasks during this time brought considerable problems of adjustment for staff which were never properly examined or understood, and which led to major crises. This story of the English prison service and the role of the officer in its evolution, is relevant to prison systems in all advanced societies and raises many controversial issues of importance to policy-makers in prison services.

Artists have long been drawn to Oman’s picturesque settlements and dramatic landscapes. During the 1840s and 1850s, Charles Golding Constable, second son of the British painter John Constable, made a series of watercolour sketches of coastal Oman and other locations in the Gulf in his role as a maritime surveyor for the East India Company. This large-format volume reproduces 29 of his watercolours, along with his acclaimed 1860 chart of the Gulf, and a full facsimile and transcript of the commonplace book that he kept on his voyages. This collection is on long-term loan from Sheikh Fahad bin Abdullah bin Ali al-Araimi at the National Museum – Sultanate of Oman. Impressions of Oman & the Gulf is written by J.E. Peterson, a leading historian of the region, and his fascinating introduction provides a biographical portrait of Constable and the historical context of his artworks.

Mr Trinity stood in the middle of the mirror and snapped his fingers once more. A big black book that had been lying on the sideboard moved from its pile and flew across the room into Mr Trinity's outstretched hands. After leaving school, he joined the merchant navy and during his service saw more than 30 countries around the globe. He later trained as a car paint technician and started his own motor repair shop. He has served in the Territorial Army and more recently he has worked as a delivery driver.J E Stirzaker has always written poetry and many of his poems have been included in published collections both in Britain and abroad. In 2003 he won an Outstanding Achievement Award from the International Society of Poets and he is currently planning to publish a collection of his works. This is his first children's book, part of a planned sequence of works.
