Kidder to his wife, Harriet, during the Civil War, James M. Greiner recounts the triumphs and tragedies endured by one New York family. Kidder, a carriage maker living in the rural village of Laurens, responded to President Lincoln's call in the summer of 1862 for more troops by personally recruiting over seventy men living nearby. Serving under Emory Upton, considered one of the most talented soldiers produced by the Union, Kidder was captain of Company I of the 121st New York Volunteers. The regiment saw action at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Rappahannock Station, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania. Kidder's letters home contain rich details of camp life, the difficulties of commanding men who had only recently been his neighbors, and the highs and lows associated with soldiering during the Civil War. They also reveal Harriet's struggle to maintain the family home and business due to the uncertainties of army pay.

Traces the development of Lacanian theory, and its possible future.In Beyond Lacan, James M. Mellard traces psychoanalytic literary theory and practice from Freud to Lacan to Zðizûek. While Freud effectively presupposes an unconscious that is textual, it is Lacan whose theory all but articulates a textual unconscious as he offers the epoch a cutting-edge psychoanalytic ideology. Mellard considers this and then asks, "Which Lacan? Is there one or many? Early or late?" As Zðizûek counters the notion of a single, unitary Lacan, Lacanians are asked to choose. Through Lacanian readings of various texts, from novels like Ellison's Invisible Man and O'Connor's Wise Blood to short stories by Glaspell and Fitzgerald, Mellard shows that in critical practice Lacanians produce a middle Lacan, between early and late.Mellard concludes by examining why Zðizûek has perhaps transcended Lacan. More than any other, it is Zðizûek who has constructed early and late Lacan, making possible that middle Lacan of praxis, but in the process he has also claimed an independent authority. Ultimately, Mellard explains how Zðizûek offers a post-Lacanian critique-one built on a pervasive philosophy of paradox-that opens new avenues of analysis of contested cultural and literary issues such as subjectivity, political economy, multiculturalism, and religious belief.

Coding for Channels with Feedback presents both algorithms for feedback coding and performance analyses of these algorithms, including analyses of perhaps the most important performance criterion: computational complexity. The algorithms are developed within a single framework, termed the compressed-error-cancellation framework, where data are sent via a sequence of messages: the first message contains the original data; each subsequent message contains a source-coded description of the channel distortions introduced on the message preceding it. Coding for Channels with Feedback provides an easily understood and flexible framework for deriving low-complexity, practical solutions to a wide variety of feedback communication problems. It is shown that the compressed-error-cancellation framework leads to coding schemes with the lowest possible asymptotic order of growth of computations and can be applied to discrete memoryless channels, finite state channels, channels with memory, unknown channels, and multiple-access channels, all with complete noiseless feedback, as well as to channels with partial and noisy feedback. This framework leads to coding strategies that have linear complexity and are capacity achieving, and illustrates the intimate connection between source coding theory and channel coding theory. Coding for Channels with Feedback is an excellent reference for researchers and communication engineers in the field of information theory, and can be used for advanced courses on the topic.

Strategic Risk examines a fundamental issue in the field of strategic management and organizations: how to study changes in the competitive outcomes of firms. Collins and Ruefli develop the concept of ordinal risk and extend this concept and its associated measures to the more general framework of state-defined systems. The book makes the state-defined risk methodology more accessible to strategic management researchers, and to social scientists in general. The need for quantitative frameworks with which to analyze the dynamics of strategic management has been apparent for some time. The state-defined risk methodology has the advantage of being based on a common usage definition of risk, and is also based on a mathematically well-behaved function. It permits investigation of the chance of gain while yielding a measure of environmental uncertainty. Finally, the development is general and permits applications employing a variety of performance dimensions over a range of entities in a diversity of contexts. The authors demonstrate the practicability and reliability of this approach by applying the model to mutual funds, large mining and manufacturing firms, and public firms on an industry by industry basis.

By understanding simulation, a designer can simulate a design to see if a design works before it is built. This gives the designer an opportunity to try different ideas. Documentation allows a designer to maintain and reuse a design more easily. Verilog's intrinsic hierarchical modularity enables the designer to easily reuse portions of the design as `intellectual property' or `macro-cells'. Some of the formal Verilog syntax are presented here, along with definitions and practical uses. This book does not oversimplify the Verilog language nor does it emphasize theory. However, the book has over 100 examples that are used to illustrate aspects of the language. In the later chapters the focus is on working with modelling style and explaining why and when one would use different elements of the language, and there is a chapter on state machine modelling. This is the story of early iron mining and manufacturing, and what remains to be seen today, in the hills that cross the northeastern border of New Jersey into New York. Centrally located in the Colonies, New Jersey was in an especially advantageous position: its waterways provided power and excellent transportation and its dense forests furnished the charcoal essential for making pig and bar iron. During the two major wars on American soil New Jersey and New York ironworks turned out badly needed supplies—among them the huge chains and booms used to block the British advance up the Hudson during the Revolution; and ordnance, made and shipped in record-breaking time, for Union troops. This is also the story of the hardy men who made this industry possible—where they came from, what their homes and company towns that grew up near each ironworks were like, how they lived, and left their mark on American history. James Ransom spent twenty-five years inspecting remains of mines (75 are described and located), furnaces and forges, dams and millraces, and other ruins closely associated with iron production in the Ramapo region. But not all was on-the-spot research. He also searched through old account books, newspapers, and records, and he has evaluated their historical importance. When word spread of his intense interest in the field, he was offered material unknown to historians—in particular, a collection of old ledgers, some dating back two hundred years, and a group of rare photographs from 1865 to 1905. From such extensive investigation, Mr. Ransom has uncovered previously unknown facts, filled in gaps, and corrected mistakes made by earlier writers on the subject.
