In this true-life non-fiction adventure, Dr. Wayne Frye explores famed knife aficionado Jim Bowie's romance with Judalon de Bornay and how it may have inadvertently led to his near death in the famous Visalia Sand Bar Brawl. Called the Rembrandt of words by one European critic, Wayne Frye's historical works read like fiction, as he puts you right in the middle of the action. In this exciting true-life adventure you can sense bullets whizzing all about. You can feel the cold steel of a knife penetrate your flesh. You can hear the clashing swords as you battle for the honour of a lady-so-fair. You can feel the palpitations of your pounding heart as you prepare for a duel with pistols to the death on a field of honour. Jim Bowie was more than a man. He was a legend. Even today, the Bowie knife commands the respect of all who know the mythology of this razor sharp blade that cut its way into folklore in the hands of a man skilled in its use to the point that all he had to do was pull back his coat and display it on his hip to strike fear into any man who dared wrong him. Saint to some, sinner to many but a man of courage to all, Jim Bowie was truly a legend in his own time.

Jim Denevan: Lake Baikal
In March of 2010, land artist Jim Denevan (born 1961) and his crew journeyed to the world’s largest lake--Lake Baikal in southwestern Siberia--where they created the world’s largest artwork on the frozen surface of the water. Enduring sub-zero temperatures and blistering winds, the seven participants used chain fencing to inscribe the ice with a series of circles based on the Fibonacci sequence (where each number is the sum of the previous two), which varied in diameter from an origin point of only 18 inches to nine square miles. The project broke the record for the largest artwork in existence, which was previously held by Denevan’s 2009 work in the Nevada desert. This volume records the highs and lows, the comedy and the drama, of this extraordinary venture, as well as the final ephemeral work itself.

Jim Mangan: The Crick

Jim Mangan: The Crick

In the crumbling community of a fundamentalist Mormon sect, the boys who remained behind reinvent themselves as modern-day cowboys American photographer Jim Mangan began The Crick as a photographic survey of the unorthodox architecture of Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) houses in the Utah-Arizona border town of Short Creek. He soon found that the bigger story lay in a group of teenage boys navigating their disintegrating community, fractured after leader Warren Jeffs was imprisoned in 2011. These subjects were children at the time of the fallout, who remained with their families in Short Creek as others elected to leave the town altogether. The Crick is a meditation on religious succession, patriarchal systems, zealotry and fraternity in the life built by these young men. Mangan’s pictures transport the reader into an alternate reality of the boys’ making: where they explore the rugged terrain of southern Utah, northern Arizona and southern Nevada on horseback, emulating old-time explorers of the Western frontier. His “ecological and sociological approach” to this series, spanning five years, depicts the playfulness of youth against the capricious landscape of the American West. In both their real and imaginary worlds, these subjects have gained a knowledge of and closeness to nature that has largely been lost in the conventions of modern life. The collection of photographs is accompanied by an essay by author Judith Freeman and a text by apostatized former FLDS member and artist Roman Bateman. Jim Mangan (born 1973) is a photographer and filmmaker best known for his images of the American West. His work has been exhibited at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, the Kunst im Tunnel in Düsseldorf and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2015, his project Blast was shown at the Sundance Film Festival.

"Carmody, renowned as a defensive wizard known to many as 'Big Nasty, ' was part of many of the most monumental football victories in Mississippi history." Rick Cleveland, from the introduction "On the surface, Jim Carmody was an 'old school' football coach who consistently put the toughest teams on the field. But he was also innovative, knew how to squeeze the absolute maximum out of each player, and was well-versed on just about any topic you wanted to discuss. His stamp on Mississippi athletics is undeniable." Billy Watkins, Clarion-Ledger features writer "Jim Carmody will always be remembered as the architect of what was known as the 'Nasty Bunch' defense at Southern Miss. A coach that was ahead of his time in the way his teams played and competed - and how he would prepare them - Carmody was the type of coach that you wanted to play for and the type of man that taught you how to be successful in life. His contributions to football in Mississippi can't be measured and will never be forgotten. What a great coach." John Cox, Voice of the Golden Eagles

This first full-length biography of the pioneer covers Jim "Junior" Gilliam's role during important baseball transitions. An established star in the Negro Leagues, Gilliam followed Jackie Robinson in MLB's integration efforts. As both a Brooklyn Dodger and Los Angeles Dodger, Gilliam notched some of the final baseball highlights at Ebbets Field and then served as a face of the new Los Angeles Dodgers.Jim Gilliam faced long odds throughout his life and had a knack for overcoming them. His father died when he was less than a year old. He was raised by his mother in segregated Nashville, Tennessee, during the Great Depression, dropping out of high school to play ball. He rode buses through the Jim Crow south as a member of the Nashville Black Vols and Baltimore Elite Giants, Negro Leagues teams in the 1940s. He spent two years with the Montreal Royals, the Brooklyn Dodgers' top minor-league team, ostensibly because it was easier for the Dodgers to keep mediocre white talent on its big-league roster than face the scrutiny of fielding a team with five Black players. He persevered to win Rookie of the Year honors as part of a long career in the majors, becoming one of MLB's first Black coaches before tragically passing away right before the 1978 World Series. On the field, Gilliam was truly the bridge between Brooklyn and Los Angeles. He recorded the last hit in Brooklyn Dodger history, scored a run in the final game at Ebbets Field, scored the first Dodger run in both the Los Angeles Coliseum and Dodger Stadium, and blasted the first home run in Dodger Stadium. He was also a notable bridge between MLB and the Negro Leagues: Gilliam is the only player to hit a home run in both the Negro League East-West All-Star Game (1950) and the Major League All-Star Game (1959) and is one of the few players to win both a Negro League Championship and a World Series.Gilliam never commanded the spotlight yet was influential in the Dodgers reaching seven World Series, winning four, during his career. He never had a permanent position and was frequently the subject of trade rumors. In the meticulously researched and elegantly written Jim Gilliam: The Forgotten Dodger, Gilliam's life story and its important place in both MLB and Dodgers history is detailed while also providing valuable insights into the racial history of Nashville, the Negro Leagues, MLB and 1960s Los Angeles. Featured are interviews with the Dodgers Gilliam played alongside, played for and coached-Dick Tracewski, Bobby Valentine, Peter O'Malley, Steve Garvey-as well as a foreword from former Dodgers GM Fred Claire.
Jim Isermann: Works 1980–2020
From functional installations to discrete objects, Jim Isermann has chronicled the conflation of postwar industrial design and fine art through popular culture A comprehensive monograph spanning the 40-year career of Palm Springs–based artist Jim Isermann (born 1955), this title shows the artist’s first 20 years of extensive, chronological research of postwar art and design filtered through popular culture and consumerism, followed by 20 years of site-specific public projects and a studio practice of labor-intensive painting, sculpture and the occasional product design project. In 1980, there were no guidebooks to California design or what we now call Midcentury Modern. Isermann constructed his own timeline, object by object, from thrift stores, flea markets and swap meets, making bodies of work that included latch hook rugs paired with painting, stained glass window panels and handsewn fabric wall hangings. By 1999, Isermann had his first computer, and so began the second 20 years of his career, with complex digitally designed patterns that found their form in commercially manufactured modules. Isermann continues to be inspired by the unpredictable, serendipitous moments that breathe life into his work.
