Winner! 2011 Obie for PlaywritingA New York Times Critic's Pick!Invasion! is a tornado of words, images and ideas, all centered around a magical name: Abulkasem. The play assaults our deepest prejudices about identity, race and language. At once hilarious, disturbing and poignant, this deeply subversive play deconstructs a threatening identity - the Arabic male - and forces us to confront our own cultural identity.

"Relentlessly thrilling . . . an orgy of the unpredictable." --New York Times Book Review "Like Thomas Pynchon taking on late capitalism. . . . surrealistic, granular in its details, and concerned with social entropy and desperate attempts at communion." --Wall Street Journal From a major new international voice, mesmerizing, inventive fiction that probes the tender places where human longings push through the cracks of a breaking world. Under Canc n's hard blue sky, a beach boy provides a canvas for tourists' desires, seeing deep into the world's underbelly. An enigmatic encounter in Copenhagen takes an IT consultant down a rabbit hole of speculation that proves more seductive than sex. The collapse of a love triangle in London leads to a dangerous, hypnotic addiction. In the Nevada desert, a grieving man tries to merge with an unearthly machine. After the Sun opens portals to our newest realities, haunting the margins of a globalized world that's both saturated with yearning and brutally transactional. Infused with an irrepressible urgency, Eika's fiction seems to have conjured these far-flung characters and their encounters in a single breath. Juxtaposing startling beauty with grotesquery, balancing the hyperrealistic with the fantastical--"as though the worlds he describes are being viewed through an ultraviolet filter," in one Danish reviewer's words--he has invented new modes of storytelling for an era when the old ones no longer suffice.
Exploring Your Inner Reality: A Guidebook for Out-of-Body Travel
From the Introduction: "... this book is being written for the beginner practitioner. I will assume your knowledge of the subject is limited and will thus offer a simple, step-by-step guide to leaving the body. Although 'astral projection' is often used as a catch-all term for any conscious activity occurring outside the body, throughout this work I will make a clear distinction between etheric projections and astral projections (etheric projections being the most common, at least for me)."By applying the same techniques I use, I believe that anyone can achieve the out-of-body state on a regular basis and with their full critical faculties intact. Surely if I can do it, you can do it (if you really want it). It is only a matter of conditioning, allowing yourself to see the 'door' that you never noticed, to realize the freedom that you never knew you had -- to edge pass the threshold and beyond matter." A Material Rain

A Material Rain

Deeply personal and deeply political, the poems of Kyle-Sidell in A Material Rain are a record, analysis, and critique of current American society. His poetry describes the rage of the impotent, the impotence of the disengaged, and the numbing fog of cynical self-regard that blankets his country. He spares no one - politicians, lobbyists, the wielders of interest, the indifferent - but always, his most unflinching, most searching examination is turned on himself. He is always looking for the glimmer of an answer, for something with which he can arm himself and those he cares for, to make sense, to give hope, to point the way.

A New Book of Words.A zebra without stripes is first to die.To be different runs opposite to human nature. We want to be part of the collective and join in something bigger than ourselves and the biggest group of all is, you guessed it, idiots. You are aware of this and you may already be an idiot yourself. Most people around you are idiots already. This you know, because you see it every day.We say this, not to divide us, because at the end of the day, we, all of us have this in common. We really are feeble minded fools, every single one of us, or soon we will be. Most books demonstrate this in a million ways, which is why they are best avoided, but the easiest way to confirm this fact is just to turn on the television or look at your social media feed. You will see an endless parade of idiots doing and saying the most dull-witted things imaginable, and still, we listen to them, look up to them and often emulate and even imitate them. The Idiot's Guide to Idiots is small book of almost 700 words which will entertain, give you insights, helpful hints, and idiotic usage examples into the evolving English language. This is the new and improved English language. Embrace it. Not that you have a choice. Change is coming. If you want to be a hapless lummox or want to unlearn how to find the doorknob THE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO IDIOTSis for you.On the other hand, in the unlikely event you don't think you are quite ready to join the growing ranks of foolish idiots around you, this is the perfect guide to seeing the world as it is seen by dullards, without restraining the English language with archaic notions of tradition, convention or reality. In the final analysis this A to Z guide is a warm invitation to join the well-established and fast-growing universe of whimsical, wilful ignorance and boisterous buffoonery.

Reading the Odyssey

Reading the Odyssey

A fresh and original introduction to the Odyssey—and how it continues to shape literature, film, art and even the ways we make sense of our livesReading the Odyssey is an introduction to Homer’s masterpiece like no other. It combines a cultural and intellectual history of the epic with an in-depth exploration of its unique and influential narrative structure and the ways it continues to inform issues of identity, meaning and experience.Reading the Odyssey begins with a broad history of the epic’s reception and interpretation, its place in cultural and intellectual history and its influence today on literature, film and art. After introducing the literary form of the Odyssey, the book turns to its main focus: the layered narrative that lies at the heart of the poem. Taking readers on a tour of the epic, Jonas Grethlein shows the nuanced ways the Odyssey uses a wide variety of narrative forms and functions. At the same time, he highlights how we all rely on narratives, first used by Homer, to form identities, forge communities and make sense of our lives. The result is a compelling guide to the Odyssey that demonstrates why it continues to speak so powerfully to so many readers today.
Mobilities, Networks, Geographies

Mobilities, Networks, Geographies

There have been striking increases in both long-distance travel and in communications through mobile phones, text messaging, emailing and videoconferencing. Such developments in communication, along with a similar increase in physical travel and movement of goods around the globe, reconfigure social networks by disconnecting and reconnecting people in new ways. This original book puts forward one of the first social science studies of the geographies of social networks and related mobilities of travel, communications and face-to-face meetings. The book examines five interdependent mobilities that form and reform these geographies of networks and travel in the contemporary world. These are: physical travel of people for work, leisure, pleasure, migration and escape; physical movement of objects delivered to producers, consumers and retailers; imaginative travel elsewhere through images and memories seen on texts, TV, computer screens and film; virtual travel on the internet; and communicative travel through letters, cards, telegrams, telephones, faxes, text messages and videoconferences. In the book the authors examine the interconnections between these different mobilities. They research how travel and social meetings require systems of coordination using virtual and communicative travel in-between physical travel and meetings. They argue that, while it might be imagined that there would be less need of physical meetings with improved technology, on the contrary, scheduled visits and meetings have become highly significant. The research shows that they are necessary to social life in the contemporary world, both within business and, especially, within families and friendships which are increasingly conducted at a distance.

Landscapes of Wisdom seeks wisdom in contemporary thought. The author, as scholar, and seeker, examines scientific, religious and literary writings, to synthesize a way of knowing accessible to the modern mind, an intellectual path meeting the challenge of science with an equally universal message that speaks of the world and its workings, but also of transcendence and the deepest core of human experience.

Bayesian Heuristic Approach to Discrete and Global Optimization

Bayesian Heuristic Approach to Discrete and Global Optimization

Jonas Mockus; William Eddy; Gintaras Reklaitis

Springer
1996
sidottu
Bayesian decision theory is known to provide an effective framework for the practical solution of discrete and nonconvex optimization problems. This book is the first to demonstrate that this framework is also well suited for the exploitation of heuristic methods in the solution of such problems, especially those of large scale for which exact optimization approaches can be prohibitively costly. The book covers all aspects ranging from the formal presentation of the Bayesian Approach, to its extension to the Bayesian Heuristic Strategy, and its utilization within the informal, interactive Dynamic Visualization strategy. The developed framework is applied in forecasting, in neural network optimization, and in a large number of discrete and continuous optimization problems. Specific application areas which are discussed include scheduling and visualization problems in chemical engineering, manufacturing process control, and epidemiology. Computational results and comparisons with a broad range of test examples are presented. The software required for implementation of the Bayesian Heuristic Approach is included. Although some knowledge of mathematical statistics is necessary in order to fathom the theoretical aspects of the development, no specialized mathematical knowledge is required to understand the application of the approach or to utilize the software which is provided. Audience: The book is of interest to both researchers in operations research, systems engineering, and optimization methods, as well as applications specialists concerned with the solution of large scale discrete and/or nonconvex optimization problems in a broad range of engineering and technological fields. It may be used as supplementary material for graduate level courses.
A Set of Examples of Global and Discrete Optimization
This book shows how the Bayesian Approach (BA) improves well known heuristics by randomizing and optimizing their parameters. That is the Bayesian Heuristic Approach (BHA). The ten in-depth examples are designed to teach Operations Research using Internet. Each example is a simple representation of some impor tant family of real-life problems. The accompanying software can be run by remote Internet users. The supporting web-sites include software for Java, C++, and other lan guages. A theoretical setting is described in which one can discuss a Bayesian adaptive choice of heuristics for discrete and global optimization prob lems. The techniques are evaluated in the spirit of the average rather than the worst case analysis. In this context, "heuristics" are understood to be an expert opinion defining how to solve a family of problems of dis crete or global optimization. The term "Bayesian Heuristic Approach" means that one defines a set of heuristics and fixes some prior distribu tion on the results obtained. By applying BHA one is looking for the heuristic that reduces the average deviation from the global optimum. The theoretical discussions serve as an introduction to examples that are the main part of the book. All the examples are interconnected. Dif ferent examples illustrate different points of the general subject. How ever, one can consider each example separately, too.
Inequality and Prosperity

Inequality and Prosperity

Jonas Pontusson

Cornell University Press
2006

What are the relative merits of the American and European socioeconomic systems? Long-standing debates have heated up in recent years with the expansion of the European Union and increasingly sharp political and cultural differences between the United States and Europe. In Inequality and Prosperity, Jonas Pontusson provides a comparative overview of the two major models of labor markets and welfare systems in the advanced industrial world: the "liberal capitalist" system of the United States and Britain and the "social market" capitalism of northern Europe. These two models balance concerns of efficiency and equity in fundamentally different ways. In the 1990s the much-heralded forces of globalization (together with demographic changes and attendant political pressures) seemed to threaten the very existence of the social-market economies of Europe. Were the social compacts of Sweden and Germany outmoded? Would varieties of capitalism remain possible, or were labor-market and social-welfare arrangements converging on the U.S. norm? Pontusson opposes the notion of inevitable convergence: he believes that social-market economies can survive and indeed flourish in the contemporary world economy. He bases his argument on an enormous amount of highly specialized research on eighteen countries, using national-level data for the last thirty years. Among the areas he explores are labor-market dynamics, income distribution, employment performance, wage bargaining, firm-level performance, and the changing possibilities for the welfare state.
