A New Meta-heuristic Optimization Algorithm Based on the String Theory Paradigm from Physics
This book focuses on the fields of nature-inspired algorithms, optimization problems and fuzzy logic. In this book, a new metaheuristic based on String Theory from Physics is proposed. It is important to mention that we have proposed the new algorithm to generate new potential solutions in optimization problems in order to find new ways that could improve the results in solving these problems. We are presenting the results for the proposed method in different cases of study. The first case, is optimization of traditional benchmark mathematical functions. The second case, is the optimization of benchmark functions of the CEC 2015 Competition and we are also presenting results of the CEC 2017 Competition on Constrained Real-Parameter Optimization that are problems that contain the presence of constraints that alter the shape of the search space making them more difficult to solve. Finally, in the third case, we are presenting the optimization of a fuzzy inference system, specificallyfor finding the optimal design of a fuzzy controller for an autonomous mobile robot. It is important to mention that in all study cases we are presenting statistical tests in or-der to validate the performance of proposed method. In summary, we believe that this book will be of great interest to a wide audience, ranging from engineering and science graduate students, to researchers and professors in computational intelligence, metaheuristics, optimization, robotics and control.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG

sidottu
Focusing on comprehensive comparisons of the performance of stochastic optimization algorithms, this book provides an overview of the current approaches used to analyze algorithm performance in a range of common scenarios, while also addressing issues that are often overlooked. In turn, it shows how these issues can be easily avoided by applying the principles that have produced Deep Statistical Comparison and its variants. The focus is on statistical analyses performed using single-objective and multi-objective optimization data. At the end of the book, examples from a recently developed web-service-based e-learning tool (DSCTool) are presented. The tool provides users with all the functionalities needed to make robust statistical comparison analyses in various statistical scenarios. The book is intended for newcomers to the field and experienced researchers alike. For newcomers, it covers the basics of optimization and statistical analysis, familiarizing them with the subject matter before introducing the Deep Statistical Comparison approach. Experienced researchers can quickly move on to the content on new statistical approaches. The book is divided into three parts:Part I: Introduction to optimization, benchmarking, and statistical analysis – Chapters 2-4.Part II: Deep Statistical Comparison of meta-heuristic stochastic optimization algorithms – Chapters 5-7.Part III: Implementation and application of Deep Statistical Comparison – Chapter 8.

Populism as Meta Ideology

Populism as Meta Ideology

Kire Sharlamanov

Springer International Publishing AG
2022
sidottu
This book explores the most important aspects of populism as a significant social phenomenon. It recapitulates the approaches to defining populism in the social sciences, singles out the most important concepts in the definition of populism, and presents them to the readership. Specific to this book is that it seeks to promote an approach that sees populism as a meta-ideology, that is, an ideology that uses other political ideologies instrumentally. In addition, the book Populism as Meta Ideology identifies the most important factors that have contributed to the growth of populism in recent times. Modernization, globalization, the crisis of political parties, and the transformation of the public sphere have been identified as such factors. A chapter is devoted to each of these factors in the book. The book concludes by examining the interaction between populism and liberal democracy, both theoretically and practically.

Nietzsche’s Meta-Existentialism

Nietzsche’s Meta-Existentialism

Vinod Acharya

De Gruyter
2013
sidottu
Vinod Acharya presents a new existential interpretation of Nietzsche's philosophy. He contends that Nietzsche's peculiar form of existentialism can be understood only by undertaking a thorough analysis of his characterization and critique of metaphysics. This reading remedies the shortcomings of previous existential interpretations of Nietzsche, which typically view existentialism as concerned primarily with the meaning of individual existence, and therefore necessarily at odds with the abstraction and objectivity of metaphysical thought. Acharya argues that the approach of Nietzsche's philosophy, especially in his mature works, is to make the typical existential position foundational, and then to develop to the fullest the implications of this position. This meta-existential approach necessarily yields an ambiguous and open-ended critique of metaphysics. Taking issue with the Heideggerian, the poststructuralist, and the naturalistic interpretations, this book contends that Nietzsche neither simply overcomes metaphysics nor remains trapped within its confines. Acharya argues that an ever-renewed encounter with and critique of metaphysics is an essential aspect of Nietzsche's meta-existentialism.

Testi trevigiani della prima metà del Trecento
This volume describes the scripta used in Treviso in the first half of the fourteenth century, based on the study of different practical texts. The analysis of an accounting notebook allows for the first time to describe the more municipal variety of the Treviso dialect, while the edition of a handful of short legal texts helps reconstruct the characteristics of a vernacular influenced by Venetian.
Forms and Functions of Meta-Discourse

Forms and Functions of Meta-Discourse

Maria Cristina Lo Baido

De Gruyter
2024
sidottu
This book constitutes the first systematic analysis of meta-discourse in the spoken domain, addressing the question of how, why, and when speakers switch from discourse to meta-discourse by means of comment clauses (e.g., ‘I think’). The case of Present-day Italian is considered, exploring the internal properties of comment clauses (e.g., morphosyntax and semantics of the verb), their relations with the surrounding discourse (e.g., position of comment clause), and their prosodic profiles. This study shows that speakers recur to meta-discourse to convey a non-random set of functions, having mainly to do with the online process of reference construction (e.g., approximation and reformulation) and with the degree of speaker’s commitment (e.g., epistemicity and emphasis). Comment clauses are also used as attention-getting or topic-resuming devices, though less frequently. One of the most interesting results of this study is the identification of a close relation between meta-discourse and stance-taking in spoken domain, with speakers recurring to comment clauses to convey their attitude. Finally, meta-discourse turns out to be highly influenced, if not constrained, by universal properties of the spoken domain (i.e., non-linearity).

Dynamic Parameter Adaptation for Meta-Heuristic Optimization Algorithms Through Type-2 Fuzzy Logic

Dynamic Parameter Adaptation for Meta-Heuristic Optimization Algorithms Through Type-2 Fuzzy Logic

In this book, a methodology for parameter adaptation in meta-heuristic op-timization methods is proposed. This methodology is based on using met-rics about the population of the meta-heuristic methods, to decide through a fuzzy inference system the best parameter values that were carefully se-lected to be adjusted. With this modification of parameters we want to find a better model of the behavior of the optimization method, because with the modification of parameters, these will affect directly the way in which the global or local search are performed.Three different optimization methods were used to verify the improve-ment of the proposed methodology. In this case the optimization methods are: PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization), ACO (Ant Colony Optimization) and GSA (Gravitational Search Algorithm), where some parameters are se-lected to be dynamically adjusted, and these parameters have the most im-pact in the behavior of each optimization method.Simulation results show that the proposed methodology helps to each optimization method in obtaining better results than the results obtained by the original method without parameter adjustment.
