Sam Steele’s Adventures on Land and Sea (1906) is a novel by L. Frank Baum. Although he is more widely known as the author of the Land of Oz series, Baum also used several pseudonyms to make forays into more conventional fiction for young adults. Sam Steele’s Adventures on Land and Sea, written under the pen name “Capt. Hugh Fitzgerald,” is a story of discovery, betrayal, fortune, and adventure. “An orphan, now, and alone in the world. This father whom the angry seas had engulfed was the only relative I had known since my sweet little mother wearied of the world and sought refuge in Heaven, years and years ago.” Having already lost his mother as a boy, sixteen year old Sam Steele faces tragedy once more. His father’s ship, the Saracen, was lost at sea near the Lucayan Archipelago, leaving just one sailor alive. All that remains of Captain Steele are his watch, his ring, and a son who never had the chance to say goodbye. Soon, Sam is cut off from his rightful inheritance by Mrs. Ranck, his guardian. Alone in the world, without a penny to his name, Sam reconnects with his maternal uncle Naboth, a sea captain preparing to sail from San Francisco to join the Klondike Gold Rush. Together, they journey into the vast Pacific, where fortune and danger await. While Sam Steele’s Adventures on Land and Sea is far from the fantasy and fairy tale style most of Baum’s readers adore him for, it remains an entertaining work of adventure fiction for devoted fans of the Oz series and newcomers alike. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of L. Frank Baum’s Sam Steele’s Adventures on Land and Sea is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

During his first year at the Dashelmore Warrior Training Academy, Sam Finch proved himself a hero when he saved King Leodin's daughter, Princess Sarah, from an evil sorcerer named Dem likar. But there was a price to pay...In order to save his father's life, Sam had to make a pact with Dem likar. One day the evil sorcerer would call upon Sam to do him a favor. Sam has no idea what that favor might be, but he knows one thing for sure: it won't be good. Now attending his second year at the Academy, Sam continues his warrior training, while also dabbling in Mage Skills and the Holy Arts. As if that isn't enough to keep him busy, he also finds himself struggling with his feelings for two different girls and trying to avoid the class bully, Cully Duke. It doesn't help that he must endure his best friend Curtis's musical night farts, too.Dem likar intends to raise an army of the undead in order to wreak havoc on the world and calls upon Sam to do him the favor he is owed. Sam must decide whether to keep his promise or to risk his father's life. And he will also have to deal with his greatest fear of all: growing up
Having failed miserably while working for his uncle, Sam finds himself shipped off to America. He would much rather have been headed to Canada as he'd fallen in love with the picture of a women he'd found left behind in a remote cabin when he'd vacationed there. That is, until he sees another picture of her, in America, while visiting an old friend. He discovers his dream girl, Kay, is the niece of Matthew Wrenn who works for Mammoth Publishing Company. Sam takes a job with Mammoth Publishing Company and rents the house next door to the Wrenn's. From there he sets out to win Kay's affections. Throw in a mystery of a lost family treasure and a gang of thieves and you have the makings of a spirited romp P. G. Wodehouse at his very best.
