Loss and the Other in the Visionary Work of Anna Maria Ortese

Loss and the Other in the Visionary Work of Anna Maria Ortese

This book examines the ?vre of Anna Maria Ortese (1914-1998) from her first literary writings in the Thirties to her great novels in the Nineties. The analysis focusses on two interweaving core themes, loss and the Other. It begins with the shaping of personal loss of an Other following death, separation, abandonment, coupled with melancholy for life's transience as depicted in autobiographical works and in her masterpiece Il porto di Toledo. The book then addresses Ortese's literary engagement with social themes in realist stories set in post-war Naples in her collection Il mare non bagna Napoli and then explores her continuing preoccupation with socio-ethical issues, imbued with autobiographical elements, in non-realist texts, including her masterful novels L'Iguana, Il cardillo addolorato and Alonso e i visionari The book combines theme and genre analysis, highlighting Ortese's adoption and hybridization of diverse literary forms such as poetry, the novel, the short story, the essay, autobiography, realism, fairy tales, fantasy, allegory. In her work Ortese weaves an ongoing dialogue with literary and non-literary works, through direct quotations, allusions, echoes, adoption of motifs and topoi. The book thus highlights the intertextual relationship with her sources: Leopardi, Dante, Petrarch, Manzoni, Collodi, Montale, Serao; Shakespeare, Milton, Keats, Blake, Joyce, Conrad, Melville, Poe, Hawthorne, Hardy; Manrique, Gongora, de Quevedo, Villalón, Bello, Cantar del mio Cid; Heine, Valery, Puccini's Madam Butterfly, folklore, popular songs, and the Bible. Ortese thus shapes her literary themes in the background of social, political and economic upheavals over six decades of Italian history, culminating in an allegorical critique of modernity and a call for a renewed bond between humans and the Other.
Family Engagement in Black Students’ Academic Success
This timely volume presents powerful stories told by Black families and students who have successfully negotiated a racially fraught, affluent, and diverse suburban school district in America, to illustrate how they have strategically contested sanctioned racist practices and forged a path for students to achieve a high-quality education.Drawing on rich qualitative data collected through interviews and interactions with parents and kin, students, community activists, and educators, Family Engagement in Black Students’ Academic Success chronicles how pride in Black American family history and values, students’ personal capabilities, and their often collective, proactive challenges to systemic and personal racism shape students’ academic engagement. Familial and collective cultural wealth of the Black community emerges as a central driver in students’ successful achievement. Finally, the text puts forward key recommendations to demonstrate how incorporating the knowledge and voices of Black families in school decision making, remaining critically conscious of race and racial history in everyday actions and longer term policy, and pursuing collective strategies for social justice in education, will help eliminate current opportunity gaps, and will counteract the master narrative of underachievement ever-present in America. This volume will be of interest to students, scholars, and academics with an interest in matters of social justice, equity, and equality of opportunity in education for Black Americans. In addition, the text offers key insights for school authorities in building effective working relationships with Black American families to support the high achievement of Black students in K-12 education.

Attributional style and self-regulated learning strategies as predictors of intrinsic
INTRODUCTION Globally, there has been an increasing concern in the education sector on how to make sure that students learn optimally at school and achieve excellence in their academic settings. It has been observed that some students in the classroom do not pay attention to what the teacher is doing as they are easily caught engaged in other activities and to see students slouched in their chairs and not listening to the teacher or participating in the classroom discussion which illustrates lack of engagement (Jones, 2008). Thus, motivating students and engaging them in learning at school is a matter of great concern for educationist today and achieving success is one of the greatest challenges of this century (Awan, Noureen and Nas, 2011). Hence, motivation and engagement have been taken as an important components for enhanced learning outcomes of students. Empirically, researches (Eccles & Wigfield, 2002; Ryan, & Deci, 1991; Berndt & Keefe, 1995; Ryan & Deci, 2000; Dweck and Leggett, 1988) point towards gender, parents, peers, teachers, personality, as being significant determinants of motivation and engagement. Despite strong theoretical associations of attributional style and self-regulated learning strategies with various academic outcomes, little research has been conducted on exploring linkages between these two variables with motivation and engagement. Attribution is a significant component of academic success. Prior researches (Hall, 2007; Perry, 1993; Perry, 1989) have shown that by altering dysfunctional attributional style, students' academic performance, motivation and success can be enhanced. In the light of these researches, it can be stated that functional attributional style has a prominent role to play in motivation and engagement. Similarly, self-regulated learning strategies have been proved (Pintrich and Garcia,1991; Zimmerman, 2002) to be significantly correlated with academic outcomes. Keeping in mind, the significance of attributional style and self-regulated learning strategies in the domain of academics, it becomes essential to explore as to how do these two factors are related to and contribute in motivation and engagement. Motivation and engagement play an essential role in students' interest in and enjoyment of school and study. These can also underpin students' achievement (Liem & Martin, 2012; Martin, 2007, 2009; Martin, Marsh, & Debus, 2001a, 2001b; 2003; Pintrich, 2003; Schunk, 1990). Thus, motivation and engagement have been found to be crucial factors in academic success and achievement because the student may,
Medicalizing Ethnicity

Medicalizing Ethnicity

In Medicalizing Ethnicity, Vilma Santiago-Irizarry shows how commendable intentions can produce unintended consequences. Santiago-Irizarry conducted ethnographic fieldwork in three bilingual, bicultural psychiatric programs for Latino patients at public mental health facilities in New York City. The introduction of "cultural sensitivity" in mental health clinics, she concludes, led doctors to construct essentialized, composite versions of Latino ethnicity in their drive to treat mental illness with sensitivity. The author demonstrates that stressing Latino differences when dealing with patients resulted not in empowerment, as intended, but in the reassertion of Anglo-American standards of behavior in the guise of psychiatric categories by which Latino culture was negatively defined. For instance, doctors routinely translated their patients' beliefs in the Latino religious traditions of espiritismo and Santería into psychiatric terms, thus treating these beliefs as pathologies.Interpreting mental health care through the framework of culture and politics has potent effects on the understanding of "normality" toward which such care aspires. At the core of Medicalizing Ethnicity is the very definition of multiculturalism used by a variety of institutional settings in an attempt to mandate equality.

Thank God that octogenarian Vilma Ginzberg cannot help herself. She must 'make noise, ' and once again does so insistently, angrily, touchingly, and beautifully in her latest poetry collection unsurprisingly titled making noise. Every poem that Ms. Ginzberg writes truly embodies the woman she is now, the product of her long life as a psychologist, activist, and all around feisty but loving human being. However, it's not enough for Vilma Ginzberg to look back and reflect on politics, sounds, loves, and music, she goes a step beyond and looks forward to her own death in a movingly provocative poem. You can hear Vilma's voice clearly in every poem. There's a gutsiness in the political poems, a bright singing in the poems about writing and creation, a rich solemnity in the poems that honor the memory of creators, poets, musicians, friends, and her own life's work-all part of the celebration reflected in the explosion of color and light chosen for the book's opening image. A very enjoyable read from start to finish.
