Ellsworth Kelly: Austin
The only building the artist designed, Austin is Kelly’s most enduring legacy In January 2015, the renowned American artist Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015) gifted to the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas, the design concept for his most monumental work. A 2,715-square-foot stone building with luminous colored glass windows, a totemic wood sculpture and 14 black-and-white marble panels, the work is titled Austin, following the artist’s tradition of naming particular works after the places for which they are destined. The structure is the only building the artist designed, despite Kelly’s lifelong interest in architecture and architectural form dating back to his earliest window studies made while living in Paris in the 1940s. Envisioned by Kelly as a site for joy and contemplation, Austin is a cornerstone of the Blanton’s permanent collection and a new icon for the city in which it stands. This comprehensive volume from Radius Books provides a thorough look at the project, from its first inception to its current position as one of the artist’s most important and enduring works. An incisive essay by Carter E. Foster, deputy director of curatorial affairs at the Blanton Museum of Art, includes archival material, drawings, historic photographs and nearly all related works Kelly created as he developed the building’s design.

Austin Valentine considered his situation. Being stuck in an elevator was no picnic Ah, but it could be a picnic. Having just bought a few groceries to deliver to his baby sister, there was food and drink available. And, he wasn't alone. His lone passenger was a beautiful, African-American woman. He hoped she was good company. After another argument with his fianc , and a hectic day at the Valentine and Wright Development Company, he longed for a quiet weekend at home. He looked forward to starting his weekend after making his grocery delivery. Now that he was stuck, he hoped his fellow passenger was friendly.Austin smiled at the woman, and she returned a nervous grin.Simone Watson inwardly sighed her frustration. How many times had she been stuck in an elevator? Too many times Had she not gone on an errand for her aunt Agatha, she would be home right now-stilettos off, bra removed, dressed in a lounging gown with warm socks on her tired feet. But looking at the brighter side, at least she was trapped with one person instead of three, like last time. And her fellow passenger was an attractive white man. He had a nice smile. But looks could be deceiving Suddenly, every story about the Civil Rights era rushed to the forefront of her mind by way of her aunt Agatha's accounts of the past, and current-day racial clashes and rallies. Was the man a racist?

"By the Rivers of Edo" calls to mind the Rivers of Babylon in the Psalms. Old Edo too was crisscrossed by rivers, moats and canals, laid out in a regular grid, a network much more organized than the narrow wandering streets. The best means of transportation was by boat. Edo was often referred to as the "Venice of the East." In these poems, "rivers" serves as a metaphor for memory and imagination. This second volume follows my pedagogical peregrinations first to Osaka Japan, then to Austin Texas, then to Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo. Poems are from my first three published volumes: Following the Serpent (1984), Proletarian Life (1987), and San Luis Obispo Sundeck Afternoons & Other Disasters (1989)
