Food Policy and Practice in Early Childhood Education and Care
This book is about food and feeding in early childhood education and care, offering an exploration of the intersection of children’s food, education, family intervention, and public health policies. The notion of ‘good’ food for children is often communicated as a matter of common sense by policymakers and public health authorities; yet the social, material, and practical aspects of feeding children are far from straightforward. Drawing on a detailed ethnographic study conducted in a London nursery and children’s centre, this book provides a close examination of the practices of childcare practitioners, children, and parents, asking how the universalism of policy and bureaucracy fits with the particularism of feeding and eating in the early years. Looking at the unintended consequences that emerged in the field, such as contradictory public health messaging and arbitrary policy interventions, the book reveals the harmful assumptions about disadvantaged groups that are perpetuated in policy discourse, and challenges the constructs of individual choice and responsibility as main determinants of health. Children’s food practices at the nursery are examined to explore the notion that, whilst for adults it is what children eat that often matters most, to children it is how they eat that is more important. This book contributes to a growing body of literature evidencing how children’s food is a contested domain, in which power relations are continuously negotiated. This raises questions not only on how children can be included in policy beyond a tokenistic involvement but also on what children’s well-being might mean beyond the biomedical sphere. The book will particularly appeal to students and scholars in food and health, food policy, childhood studies, and medical anthropology. Policymakers and non-governmental bodies working in the domains of children’s food and early years policies will also find this book of interest.

This book offers a zemiological approach for understanding border control practices, state power, and their social impact. Drawing on an ethnographic study on the borderisation of the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, it explores border harms from the perspective of the non-migrant community.Social Harm at the Border examines a range of social harms associated with border control, and draws on themes of security, racialised humanitarianism, economic harms, environment, and culture. It explores the ways in which borderisation exercises control over both migrants and non-migrants, ensuring that border communities remain subordinated to the power of institutional actors, and it offers a novel framework with which to illuminate and explain border harms and their generative mechanisms. An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, zemiology, sociology, criminal justice, politics, geography, and those interested in the harms caused by border control practices.

This is a book about urban complexity – how it evolves and how it gets destroyed. It explores the structures of interdependency which underpin cities, where the many different “parts” (people, streets, industry sectors) interact to form an evolving “whole”.The book explores the evolution and destruction of complexity in one city – Greater Manchester – but also other post-industrial cities, including Sheffield and Newcastle, Detroit and New Haven. The focus is on the networked qualities of public urban space, and how street networks work as multiscale systems. The book also explores economic networks, and the evolving sets of interconnecting economic capabilities which help to shape urban economies. It demonstrates how cities evolve through processes of self-organisation – and concludes by considering how policy makers can best harness such processes as they rebuild urban complexity following insensitive planning interventions in the 1960s and 1970s.The book will appeal to anybody with an interest in cities, and how they work. It is interdisciplinary in scope, weaving in strands from architecture, economics, history, anthropology and ecology. It is written for academics but also non-academics, including urban planners, architects, local economic development actors and other policy makers.

First Published 1970, Muscovy presents a lively and amusing selection of travellers’ tales from the most important of old and rare books. There is the journal of the Dutch sailor Struys, whose imbroglios with Cossacks and Tartars reads more like a picturesque novel than a seaman’s log. There are accounts by visitors long resident in Russia, who learned the language, made friends with people like Captain John Perry, engineer to Peter the Great, Dr Cook, physician to Prince Galitzin, Martha Wilmot, the Irish girl who helped Princess Dashkov to write her memoirs, Daniel Wheeler, the Quaker whom Alexander I invited to drain the marshes of St. Petersburg. Most of the travellers were baffled by the immense scale of Russia, some perplexed and amused by its different ways of life. They describe the Russian landscape and the Russian people: how they lived in their cities and their villages, what they ate and drank, how they built their homes, tilled their fields, how they worshipped, bore tyranny under which they lived, celebrated birth, marriage, and death. Although Miss Wilson’s account ends in 1900, her readers will recognize in the writings of the travellers’ sudden echoes and likenesses of Russia today. This is a must read for students of Russian history.

There are fairy tales that surprise, destabilise, or even shock us: these are uncanny fairy tales that manipulate familiar stories in creative and bewildering ways in order to express new meanings. This work analyses these tales, basing its approach on a reformulation of Freud’s concept of the uncanny. Through a cognitive outlook the employed theoretical framework provides new perspectives on the study of experimental literary fairy tales. Considering English-language literature, complex and unsettling reinterpretations of the fairy-tale discourse began to appear during the Victorian Age, later resurfacing as a postmodern trend. This research individuates uncanny-related narrative techniques and cognitive responses as means to decodify and explore these tales, and as ways to discover unseen connections between Victorian and postmodern texts. The new theorisation of the uncanny is linked with three subconcepts: mirror, hybridity, and wonder, which function as tools to describe and investigate the cognitive and emotional entanglements characterising enigmatic and disorienting fairy tales.

This is the first translation of the Hystoria de via or ‘Monte Cassino Chronicle,’ one of the few surviving crusader sources from Southern Italy, where it was probably compiled (partly from known sources) between the 1130s and 1140s. The chronicle’s original sections offer new and fresh insight on the knowledge and reception of the First Crusade in Southern Italy, and the devotional and pilgrimage practices which surrounded it. The introduction contextualises the chronicle in the environment which produced it, discussing the historiographical tradition at Montecassino, the likely sources for the Hystoria, and its significance as an original source. The introduction also comments extensively on the theological framework of the Hystoria, which offers an intensely religious view of the crusade as pilgrimage, and insists particularly on the primacy of violence in its vision of Christian devotional practice, and the crusade as continuous movement through suffering for the pilgrims. The translation, which is both faithful to the text and highly readable, is accompanied by detailed references and a full commentary. The volume makes an important addition to the canon of crusader sources and provides a little-known example for specialists of the literature of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.

Over the last few decades international organisations, national governments, and governmental and private actors have all multiplied their efforts to limit the extent to which natural catastrophes, man-made atrocities and political and economic breakdowns affect civil populations. The European Union and Humanitarian Crises: Patterns of Intervention addresses the allocation of foreign aid within the framework of the European Union’s Humanitarian Aid policy and analyses different Member States’ intervention strategies designed to cope with these emergencies. Joining the debate about bilateral and multilateral allocation of foreign aid in crisis situations and exploring the cooperative actions undertaken by the European Union and its Member States to cope with them the book questions how the context of the crises themselves impacts on strategies of intervention and investigates how strategies change depending on the characteristics of the crisis.
