First Published 1970, Muscovy presents a lively and amusing selection of travellers’ tales from the most important of old and rare books. There is the journal of the Dutch sailor Struys, whose imbroglios with Cossacks and Tartars reads more like a picturesque novel than a seaman’s log. There are accounts by visitors long resident in Russia, who learned the language, made friends with people like Captain John Perry, engineer to Peter the Great, Dr Cook, physician to Prince Galitzin, Martha Wilmot, the Irish girl who helped Princess Dashkov to write her memoirs, Daniel Wheeler, the Quaker whom Alexander I invited to drain the marshes of St. Petersburg. Most of the travellers were baffled by the immense scale of Russia, some perplexed and amused by its different ways of life. They describe the Russian landscape and the Russian people: how they lived in their cities and their villages, what they ate and drank, how they built their homes, tilled their fields, how they worshipped, bore tyranny under which they lived, celebrated birth, marriage, and death. Although Miss Wilson’s account ends in 1900, her readers will recognize in the writings of the travellers’ sudden echoes and likenesses of Russia today. This is a must read for students of Russian history.

There are fairy tales that surprise, destabilise, or even shock us: these are uncanny fairy tales that manipulate familiar stories in creative and bewildering ways in order to express new meanings. This work analyses these tales, basing its approach on a reformulation of Freud’s concept of the uncanny. Through a cognitive outlook the employed theoretical framework provides new perspectives on the study of experimental literary fairy tales. Considering English-language literature, complex and unsettling reinterpretations of the fairy-tale discourse began to appear during the Victorian Age, later resurfacing as a postmodern trend. This research individuates uncanny-related narrative techniques and cognitive responses as means to decodify and explore these tales, and as ways to discover unseen connections between Victorian and postmodern texts. The new theorisation of the uncanny is linked with three subconcepts: mirror, hybridity, and wonder, which function as tools to describe and investigate the cognitive and emotional entanglements characterising enigmatic and disorienting fairy tales.

This is the first translation of the Hystoria de via or ‘Monte Cassino Chronicle,’ one of the few surviving crusader sources from Southern Italy, where it was probably compiled (partly from known sources) between the 1130s and 1140s. The chronicle’s original sections offer new and fresh insight on the knowledge and reception of the First Crusade in Southern Italy, and the devotional and pilgrimage practices which surrounded it. The introduction contextualises the chronicle in the environment which produced it, discussing the historiographical tradition at Montecassino, the likely sources for the Hystoria, and its significance as an original source. The introduction also comments extensively on the theological framework of the Hystoria, which offers an intensely religious view of the crusade as pilgrimage, and insists particularly on the primacy of violence in its vision of Christian devotional practice, and the crusade as continuous movement through suffering for the pilgrims. The translation, which is both faithful to the text and highly readable, is accompanied by detailed references and a full commentary. The volume makes an important addition to the canon of crusader sources and provides a little-known example for specialists of the literature of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.

Over the last few decades international organisations, national governments, and governmental and private actors have all multiplied their efforts to limit the extent to which natural catastrophes, man-made atrocities and political and economic breakdowns affect civil populations. The European Union and Humanitarian Crises: Patterns of Intervention addresses the allocation of foreign aid within the framework of the European Union’s Humanitarian Aid policy and analyses different Member States’ intervention strategies designed to cope with these emergencies. Joining the debate about bilateral and multilateral allocation of foreign aid in crisis situations and exploring the cooperative actions undertaken by the European Union and its Member States to cope with them the book questions how the context of the crises themselves impacts on strategies of intervention and investigates how strategies change depending on the characteristics of the crisis.

I made choices. Messy. Soul-shattering. Forbidden choices. The kind that could burn everything to the ground. From the outside, my life looks perfect. Devoted husband. Two beautiful kids. Even a perky ass at thirty-nine. But inside? I'm drowning. In silence, in guilt, in a version of myself I barely recognize. A pretty train wreck held together with smiles and lies. Then Dylan Hayes crashes into my world. Rugged. Addictive. Off-limits. He makes me feel alive. Wanted. Seen. One problem... I'm married. Now I have to choose between the life I built or risking it all for a man who isn't mine. Secrets unravel. Hearts shatter. No one walks away untouched. Because not every love story is a sunset. Some are wildfires. JINXED HEARTS isn't just about love or healing. It's raw. Bold. And every shade of grey. A story that dares you to question the life you're living... to tear it all apart... and to start again.
The Blessing in Disguise, Revealed: A story of how far faith can take you
There are all kinds of roads we go down in life, there are all kinds of choices we make that can change and alter our God giving purpose. I have learned it is what doesn't kill us, that makes us stronger; and that even when you turn your back on God, he is still there waiting on you. This is my story of hitting rock bottom, not once but twice; of surviving rape, of being in the depths of a drug and alcohol addiction and of losing too many loved ones. This journey has taken me through 24 years of being in a verbally abusive marriage and two suicide attempts to see I couldn't do this by myself. It's about turning to God because you have no one else to turn to and though you closed him out and you stopped talking, he never stopped listening. When you truly give your life over to him, even though your not worthy, even though your not perfect, he will change your life, he will bless you beyond measure. This book is about walking out on faith when I couldn't see through the darkness, yet somehow knowing God would take care of it, having "Crazy faith" like my Bishop taught us. It's about trusting that God has you, that he has bigger plans than even you could dream of.This is the story of how far faith can take you.
