"Your pleasure is my pleasure, Miss Fairhurst." Sir Ragnor Withersby to Miss Judith Fairhurst, in a cupboard, the British Museum, London 1817A skill at cards is not usually part of a young lady's repertoire. An astounding skill at piquet? Unheard of. Yet here's Miss Judith Fairhurst, a natural at the game, facing renowned expert Sir Ragnor Withersby across the table-and thoroughly defeating him. Their first hand arouses his interest, their first kiss arouses a lot more, and elegant man-about-town Sir Ragnor is about to find out what it's like to tumble headfirst off a dangerous cliff into unknown waters. There will be gambling, of course. Potential scandals, cheats and revelations will abound. There will be new friends, sculptures, a strange decanter of brandy and a very nice bottom. Perhaps Fate has set their feet on a path to pleasure, but not all their steps will be smooth. Some games must be very carefully played...

Judith Butler's Gender Trouble is a perfect example of creative thinking. The book redefines feminism's struggle against patriarchy as part of a much broader issue: the damaging effects of all our assumptions about gender and identity. Looking at the factionalism of contemporary (1980s) feminism, Butler saw a movement split by identity politics. Riven by arguments over what it meant to be a women, over sexuality, and over class and race, feminism was falling prey to internal problems of identity, and was failing to move towards broader solidarity with other liberation movements such as LGBT. Butler turned these issues on their head by questioning the basis that supposedly fundamental and fixed identities such as 'masculine/feminine' or 'straight/gay' actually have. Tracing these binary definitions back to the binary nature of human anatomy ('male/female'), she argues that there is no necessary link between our anatomies and our identities. Subjecting a wide range of evidence from philosophy, cultural theory, anthropology, psychology and anthropology to a renewed search for meaning, Butler shows both that sex (biology) and gender (identity) are separate, and that even biological sex is not simplistically either/or male/female. Separating our biology from identity then allows her to argue that, while categories such as 'masculine/feminine/straight/gay' are real, they are not necessary; rather, they are the product of society's assumptions, and the constant reproduction of those assumptions by everyone around us. That opens up some small hope for change: a hope that – 25 years after Gender Trouble's publication – is having a huge impact on societies and politics across the world.

A groundbreaking, anachronistic experiment in literature informed by the countertraditions of New Narrative and queer writingJudith, an academic celebrity, and Wendy, a slightly less famous academic celebrity, fall in love. They break up. In her ensuing grief, Wendy finds herself in a pornographic, epistolary haze that slumps toward the narrative. Fueled by the only things that cut through the pain--sex and democratic theory--Wendy takes us along on her wild ride toward self-actualization. In Claire Star Finch's first novel, love and the void question each other in action.Claire Star Finch (born 1988) is a Paris-based experimental writer and performer. In 2024 they completed a doctorate in Gender Studies at the University of Paris 8 that explores the literary queerfeminisms of Kathy Acker, H l ne Cixous, Violette Leduc and Audre Lorde.
The Story of Judith and the Triumph of the Oppressed: A Deep Dive into the Narrative, Theology, and Impact of a Biblical Icon
In an era where resilience and faith were essential for survival, Judith's story shines as a beacon of courage and spiritual triumph. Revered as a powerful heroine in the Apocryphal texts, Judith defies not only an oppressor's might but also the societal constraints of her time, emerging as a symbol of hope and strength. In The Story of Judith and the Triumph of the Oppressed, Wanda G. Hiller meticulously explores the layers of narrative and theology that have immortalized Judith as a cultural and religious icon. With a focus on the historical and socio-political context that shaped this story, Hiller brings to light the timeless themes of justice, faith, and divine intervention that resonate across generations. This scholarly yet accessible analysis sheds new light on Judith's role in shaping Jewish identity and her profound influence on both Jewish and Christian traditions.
