The Sunday school model of religious education has been much beloved in our Unitarian Universalist tradition. Half a century ago, and at the time of its inception, Sunday school was a significant draw for children and families and was popular in dominant culture. Over the past two decades, religious professionals and lay leaders have been questioning the effectiveness of this model. Working harder, moving things around, and investing more money in Sunday school has not increased its effectiveness. These strategies have not worked in part because we have failed to convey that the way we have always done things is no longer serving our Unitarian Universalist congregations. While we have been applying a multitude of technical fixes to this adaptive challenge, we have failed a generation of young Unitarian Universalists. Today's reformation calls for the centering of faith formation in the mission of communities of faith.
The Meaning of Finding Coins

You are being invited to a heavenly conversation. In this enchanting book of true miracle stories, written to share encouragement, love and wonder, angelic guides provide spiritual insight into the messages offered to you by a "found coin." If I told you that picking up the random coins you come across could add a whole new layer of depth and meaning to your life, would you find that hard to believe? I mean, really, is finding a quarter, or a dime, or a penny on the street a big deal? Yeah. It really could be. What if the coin, as you picked it up, gave you a sense of love and support that only your mom could give you, even though your mom's in Heaven now? What if you suddenly felt able to let go of financial concerns that were plaguing you? What if every time you found a coin in a most unusual way you understood that you'd just been invited to enter a state of wonder, enjoy the life-enhancing benefits of that wonder, and were able to relax into the soothing comfort of divine reassurance? What if, from past experience, you knew that an oddly placed coin was sent as a loving reminder to take a step back and review what's going on in your life? What if you knew the coin served as an affirmation that you're on the right track? What if, over time, you came to believe that these remarkable experiences are actually part of ongoing communication from the divine realm? Would you feel less alone in this world? Would that add meaning to your life? It certainly has added meaning to mine. This book is the result of one long chain of events. I experienced interesting encounters with random coins and I began to talk to others about what had been happening. When I brought up the subject to those who'd already had their own unique coin encounter, they smiled at me knowingly, eyes twinkling, eager to talk about it, like we were part of some special club. Then, I wrote a post on the subject and put it on my blog. The post turned out to be some type of energetic call sent into the Universe to expand my awareness on the subject. I later learned that I'd opened up what the guides call "an energetic pathway." I began to record the information that was being "downloaded" to me with the inkling it was meant to be a book. The "download" was not just about coins. In addition to the meanings and possible reasons that people start to find coins in ways that are just plain hard to ignore, there was also an interesting blend of spiritual insight. Some of the reasons people find coins you've probably already heard of. Some of the reasons will surprise you...What are the coins you find trying to tell you?FROM THE BACK COVER: What if the simple act of picking up a coin could begin a heavenly conversation so mystical that it altered the way you view life? That is what happened to this author. In 2010, Kimberly Ahri began to find coins everywhere-every single day. This curious experience lasted for weeks, prompting her to pray for guidance and ask the question, "Is there meaning in finding coins?" The answer changed her life and initiated a wonder-filled journey that infused her spirit with hope during some of her most challenging times. Her journey also revealed spiritual insights and messages in the coins sure to help anyone feel more connected to the divine in life. This book is an answer to her calling: To share the information given to her so others may experience the same sense of encouragement and wonder. What if you could enter into a divine conversation that would give you a sense of love, reassurance, and comfort-every single time you find a coin? You can. And you've already been invited.
When Faith Is All There Is: Faith Is Enough: An Ancient Prophet Speaks to Today's World
Part in-depth biblical study, part interactive devotional, When Faith Is All There Is: Faith Is Enough is an inspirational journey of perseverance and hope in the face of injustice. In part one, coauthor Stanton G. Winder explores the book of Habakkuk both in relation to the ancient prophet's crisis of faith and the parallels of Habakkuk's society to the modern world. Habakkuk calls upon God to punish the wicked and deliver justice. God answers with swift and frightening vengeance, leaving Habakkuk questioning the nature of his Creator. However, with time, Habakkuk learns to rejoice in God's plan. Like the prophet, you'll learn about the character of a faith-filled life in chapters on honesty, humility, perseverance, and more. In part two, coauthor Kimberly E. Allston outlines a four-week devotional based on the virtues extolled in part one, as the values of faith, hope, patience, and trust transcend the years between Habakkuk's era and our own. The interactive and reflective spiritual workbook follows the first part's structure, analyzing the obstacles faced by believers during both ancient and modern times. Each week, you'll learn to take heart in the Lord, just as Habakkuk did, and learn practical ways to walk each day by extraordinary faith.

Farmer and conservationist Wendell Berry has published more than thirty books, making his name a household word among environmentalists. From his Kentucky farm, Berry preaches and practices stewardship of the land as he seeks to defend the value and traditions of farm life in an industrial capitalist society. A central figure in the greening of American agrarianism, Berry has been an advocate of small farming and traditional values who has tirelessly reminded readers that sustainable agriculture is more than a catchphrase. Kimberly Smith now reveals the depth of his ideas and their relevance for American social and political theory. Berry's central teaching focuses on the fragility of our natural and social worlds; Smith's timely book revisits the problem of living a meaningful life in a world filled with both deadly perils and unimagined possibilities. Here is the first book to explore the implications of this central tenet and other key aspects of Berry's thought, as well as his overall contribution to environmental theory and politics. Smith shows how the many strands of Berry's thought can be woven together into a coherent agrarian philosophy. Focusing on his relationship to the American agrarian and environmental traditions, the examines how Berry's ecological agrarianism derives from the concept of ""grace,"" or living in concert with nature and society. Along the way, she defends his social theory against accusations of utopianism, shows how his moral theory subverts the notion of rugged individualism usually associated with farming, and reviews his political theory's argument for decentralized democracy. By assessing Berry's reformulation of democratic agrarianism, Smith goes beyond any previous critiques of his writing, and her exploration of Berry's moral vision shows that such vision is more relevant as America continues to move further away from its agrarian past.

African American intellectual thought has long provided a touchstone for national politics and civil rights, but, as Kimberly Smith reveals, it also has much to say about our relationship to nature. In this first single-authored book to link African American and environmental studies, Smith uncovers a rich tradition stretching from the abolition movement through the Harlem Renaissance, demonstrating that black Americans have been far from indifferent to environmental concerns. Beginning with environmental critiques of slave agriculture in the early nineteenth century and evolving through critical engagements with scientific racism, artistic primitivism, pragmatism, and twentieth-century urban reform, Smith highlights the continuity of twentieth-century black politics with earlier efforts by slaves and freedmen to possess the land. She examines the works of such canonical figures as Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Alain Locke, all of whom wrote forcefully about how slavery and racial oppression affected black Americans' relationship to the environment. Smith's analysis focuses on the importance of freedom in humans' relationship with nature. According to black theorists, the denial of freedom can distort one's relationship to the natural world, impairing steward-ship and alienating one from the land. Her pathbreaking study offers the first linkage of the early conservation movement to black history, the first detailed description of black agrarianism, and the first analysis of scientific racism as an environmental theory. It also offers a new way to conceptualize black politics by bringing into view its environmental dimension, as well as a normative environmental theory grounded in pragmatism and aimed at identifying the social conditions for environmental virtue. Smith's work offers a new approach to established writers and thinkers and shows that they justly deserve a place in the canon of American environmental thought. ""African American Environmental Thought"" enriches our understanding of black politics and environmental history, and of environmental theory in general. Because slavery and racism have shaped the meaning of the American landscape, this body of thought offers us fresh conceptual resources by which we can make better sense of our world.

Over the course of the twentieth century, the United States emerged as a global leader in conservation policy—negotiating the first international conservation treaties, pioneering the idea of the national park, and leading the world in creating a modern environmental regulatory regime. And yet, this is a country famously committed to the ideals of limited government, decentralization, and strong protection of property rights. How these contradictory values have been reconciled, not always successfully, is what Kimberly K. Smith Sets out to explain in The Conservation Constitution—a book that brings to light the roots of contemporary constitutional conflict over environmental policy. In the mid-nineteenth century, most Progressive Era conservation policies would have been considered unconstitutional. Smith traces how, between 1870 and 1930, the conservation movement reshaped constitutional doctrine to its purpose—how, specifically, courts and lawyers worked to expand government authority to manage wildlife, forest and water resources, and pollution. Her work, which highlights a number of important Supreme Court decisions often overlooked in accounts of this period, brings the history of environmental management more fully into the story of the US Constitution. At the same time, illuminating the doctrinal innovation in the Progressives’ efforts, her book reveals the significance of constitutional history to an understanding of the government’s role in environmental management.

Why did it take so long for American law schools to start teaching about climate change? Although most environmental law professors were aware of climate change by 1990, it took nearly fifteen years for them to incorporate the topic into their curriculum. In her innovative new work, Kimberly K. Smith explores how American environmental law professors have addressed climate change, identifying the barriers they faced, how they overcame them, and how they created “climate law” as a domain of legal specialization.Making Climate Lawyers explores the history of why American law schools were resistant to teaching about climate change and how that changed over the course of a forty-year period, resulting in law schools across the country incorporating climate change into their curricula, with many even establishing centers on the environment. Smith challenges dominant explanations of why the United States was slow to develop climate policy: it wasn’t just political opposition or short-sightedness. Creating climate legal professionals required changing the fundamentals of legal education.Based on dozens of interviews with faculty and students, Making Climate Lawyers fills a gap in the literature on the intellectual history of climate change, most of which focuses on the history of climate science. Smith focuses instead on how the climate problem fits (or doesn’t fit) into the structure of American law. She uses this story as a lens through which to understand both the transformation of legal education since the 1980s and the nature of climate change as a policy problem.

This book offers the first authoritative guide to assumptions about time in theories of contemporary world politics. It demonstrates how predominant theories of the international or global ‘present’ are affected by temporal assumptions, grounded in western political thought, that fundamentally shape what we can and cannot know about world politics today. The first part of the book traces the philosophical roots of assumptions about time in contemporary political theory. The second part examines contemporary theories of world politics, including liberal and realist International Relations theories and the work of Habermas, Hardt and Negri, Virilio and Agamben. In each case, it is argued, assumptions about political time ensure the identification of the particular temporality of western experience with the political temporality of the world as such and put the theorist in the unsustainable position of holding the key to the direction of world history. In the final chapter, the book draws on postcolonial and feminist thinking, and the philosophical accounts of political time in the work of Derrida and Deleuze, to develop a new ‘untimely’ way of thinking about time in world politics.
