L'Ibérie Chrétienne et le Maghreb (XIIe - XVe siècles)

L'Ibérie Chrétienne et le Maghreb (XIIe - XVe siècles)

Ch.-E. Dufourcq; Jacques Heers

The late Ch.-E. Dufourcq was one of the first to map out the relations between the Christian and Muslim coastlands of the medieval western Mediterranean. These studies reveal the extent of the contribution he made to the subject, and the care and attention with which he handled the scattered documentary sources. There are three main themes to the volume: one group of articles focuses on the political and diplomatic aspects of the relations between Spain (Catalonia in particular) and the Maghreb (the lands of the modern Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia); a second is concerned more with commercial contacts and with a comparison of the economic conditions north and south of the Mediterranean, and with the day-to-day life of the sailors and merchants who formed the link between the two. A third theme, most prominent in the final articles, is the social and economic history of Catalonia itself, a subject to which he returned in the final years of his life.
The context of this second volume by Professor Duval is the trinitarian controversies of the later 4th century. His work presents a detailed analysis of the 'reconquest' of Northan Italy and Illyricum from the homeist dogmas put in place by Constans II and affirmed by the Council of Rimini in 359-60. Milan occupies a central place, first as a bastion of Arianism, then as the see of Ambrose, who eventually oversaw the victory of orthodoxy; as these studies show, the process was not straightforward, and even after the Council of Aquileia in 381, remained imperilled by the turbulent politics of the Empire. The final item, hitherto unpublished, gives a critical account of some recent work on Ambrose.
L’Hagiographie et l’Iconoclasme Byzantin
The period of Byzantine Iconoclasm remains in many ways a 'Dark Age'. With this volume Marie-France Auzépy continues her fundamental re-examination of one of the key sources for the time, the Life of Stephen the Younger. Previously in this series she has published a new edition, translation and commentary on the text; the present work aims to establish a solid methodology for reading a hagiographical text as a historical source, and includes a systematic literary analysis to illuminate how the author treated his subject matter. Amongst other conclusions, this study shows how the historical presentation of the period was consciously shaped by the patriarchate of Constantinople in the years 787-815, in order to affirm the independence of the Church from imperial power.

The story begins with the Bean family, young Leon Leonwood Bean's love of the outdoors, his first forays into sales (soap, men's clothing), and then his development of the boot and the beginnings of an outdoors outfitting company that ran on a card file system and resisted change. The story of L.L. Bean, Inc.'s phenomenal growth under grandson Leon Gorman is replete with Preppies, MBAs, infighting, and even parodies of a company that would eventually get its own Zip Code.

In 1955 an American family moved into a chalet on the side of a steep Swiss alp. They did not know exactly why God had brought them there, what He wanted them to do, or even where the money to live on would come from. But He began opening doors, and people with questions about life's meaning began finding the way to their home. Edith Schaeffer, wife of Dr. Francis Schaeffer, tells the remarkable story of how God led them step by step, as that one small chalet grew into a whole community. It took the name L'Abri (French for shelter). Day by day, God faithfully provided for their family, and eventually for the entire community. The Schaeffers believed that truth must be demonstrated as well as debated. They wanted to show the world through the transformed lifestyle of a believing community that the personal-infinite God is really here in our generation. In a society losing the ability to distinguish between Christian and non-Christian values, truth and untruth, good and evil, L'Abri equipped people to make that distinction. For more than thirty years, people have come to L'Abri from all walks of life and from many countries, searching for truth and reality. There they find someone who cares for them personally, who listens carefully to their questions, and who gives them answers based on an uncompromising commitment to Biblical truth. L'Abri now has branches in several other countries and has affected the lives of literally thousands of people around the world.

L'Entr e d'Espagne is a fourteenth century Franco-Italian poem, probably composed by its unknown Paduan author at the early Visconti court, which defined a literary trend of the Renaissance; by transforming a typical epic matter - Charlemagne's conquest of Spain - into a chivalric poem, it successfully hybridized epic with classical sources, references to the Breton romances, and European conceptions (or misconceptions) of medieval Islam. This study traces the major influences upon this important work of art, including the backdrop of early fourteenth-century Northern Italian politics. It examines the gradual weakening of the figure of Charlemagne in the poem as a reflection, above all, of the diplomatic and military tensions between France and the early rulers of Milan.

The text of the highly successful version of L'ASSOMMOIR produced at the West Yorkshire Playhouse by the acclaimed team of Jane Gibson, Sue Lefton, Anthony Ingle and Stephen Wyatt. An ensemble piece in words, music and movement. Cast of five women and four men. "Zola's teeming, remorseless view of labouring life in 19th-century Paris translates excellently into vivid theatrical terms. The story is told with superb economy and invention and without any recourse to a spoken, linking narrative." Jeffrey Wainwright in The Independent. "Theatre is swarming with adaptations of novels. Some are better than others and Stephen Wyatt's version of L'Assommoir is amongst the best I've seen" Michael Schmidt in The Dialy Telegraph. "This fine stage version." Michael Coveney in The Observer
