J.S. Bach's Major Works for Voices and Instruments
Designed for the music lover in need of a better understanding of the dramatic thrust of Bach's four major works for voices and instruments, this guide is based on extensive program notes prepared for the renowned Baldwin-Wallace College Bach Festival, an annual event with a tradition of presenting the four masterworks in cyclical fashion going back to the festival's founding in 1933 by Albert Riemenschneider. Giving priority to the most prominent auditory and dramatic features of the music, it guides the listener through each work, movement by movement, and with an integrated presentation of commentary and text-translation. Particular attention is given to the interaction of text and music, suggesting reasons for Bach's musical choices. The libretti are rendered according to the new critical edition of Bach's works (Neue Bach-Ausgabe). Scriptural texts appear in italics; chorale (hymn) texts are printed in bold. The book also includes a helpful glossary of terms, an index of movements, and a bibliography.
Historical Dictionary of Choral Music

Historical Dictionary of Choral Music

The human voice an incredibly beautiful and expressive instrument, and when multiple voices are unified in tone and purpose a powerful statement is realized. No wonder people have always wanted to sing in a communal context-a desire apparently stemming from a deeply rooted human instinct. Consequently, choral performance has often been related historically to human rituals and ceremonies, especially rites of a religious nature. This Historical Dictionary of Choral Music examines choral music and practice in the Western world from the Medieval era to the 21st century, focusing mostly on familiar figures like Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Britten. But its scope is considerably broader, and it includes all sorts of music-religious, secular, and popular-from sources throughout the world. It contains a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and more than 1,000 cross-referenced dictionary entries on important composers, genres, conductors, institutions, styles, and technical terms of choral music.

You've Been Had!

With all of the negative media about environmental threats over the last four decades, is it any wonder that most people believe disaster is just around the corner? But despite what the media would lead us to believe, annual reports from the Surgeons General show that Americans are the healthiest they have ever been, are becoming healthier and are, in fact, the healthiest people on the planet. In You’ve Been Had!, Melvin Benarde aims to set the record straight and counteract the culture of complaint and worry with an unbiased account of the scientific facts — facts which suggest we are worried and frightened about the wrong things. Contrary to what the media would have us believe, he argues that the environmental factors that most adversely affect our health are those that are within our power to alter, such as smoking, diet, drugs, stress, guns speed, exercise, and basic safety precautions. Topics covered include: carcinogens and anti- carcinogens; dietary supplements and neutraceuticals; food safety, pasteurization and irradiation; genetically modified foods; microbial threats to health; hazardous and toxic waste; radiation and skin cancer; global warming; risk-taking; obesity, asthma, violence and longevity. Benarde also looks at the ways the media reports science and evidence-based medicine.
The Adventures of Amos 'n' Andy

The Adventures of Amos 'n' Andy

Melvin Patrick Ely

Forty million Americans indulged in a national obsession in 1930: they eagerly tuned in Amos 'n' Andy, the nightly radio comedy in which a pair of white actors portrayed the adventures of two black men making a new life in the big city. Meanwhile, some angry African Americans demanded that Amos 'n' Andy be banned, even as others gathered in the barbershops and radio stores of Harlem to chuckle over the adventures of Amos, Andy, and the Kingfish. Melvin Patrick Ely unveils a fascinating tale of America's shifting color line, in which two professional directors of blackface minstrel shows manage to produce a serives so rich and complex that it wins admirers ranging from ultra-racists to outspoken racial egalitarians. Eventually, the pair stir further controversy when they bring their show to television. In a preface written especially for this new edition of his acclaimed classic, Ely shows how white and black responses to his Adventures of Amos 'n' Andy since 1991 tell a revealing story of their own about racial hopes and fears at the turn of the twenty-first century.

Frederick Law Olmsted is famous for his urban landscape designs: Central Park in Manhattan, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and Franklin Park in Boston. Olmsted devoted much of his later life to this work. What was the source of this creative energy and imagination in his fascinating years? Melvin Kalfus is the first author to examine Olmsted's troubled, sometimes tragic childhood and adolescence in a search for the inner sources of his creative imagination. Kalfus argues that Olmsted's distressing early experiences fired his ambition and led him so obsessively to seek the world's esteem through his works. Kalfus also looks at Olmsted's varied early career during which he worked as an apprentice merchant, a seaman, a farmer, a manager of a mining plantation in California, a journalist, and author of three istorically important books on slavery, and as the General Secretary of the Civil War's Sanitary Commission, and enormous project organized to provide medical aid to Union soldiers.

Administrative Barriers to Foreign Investment

Administrative Barriers to Foreign Investment

World Bank Publications

When at every turn, they find a new twist, or a new requirement, foreign investors in Africa can be easily discouraged from setting up businesses. Although many African governments have liberalized and reformed investment policies and promote themselves as investment sites, the reality facing investors differs greatly. To help change the "lack of investor response" to Africa's enticements, this book examines the administrative constraints to investment in several African countries. It presents the experience that confronts investors when they set up a company. The case histories demonstrate how the morass of licenses, approvals, permits, and other requirements that result in undue delays and unforeseen costs encourage bribery and corruption and foster an environment of pervasive uncertainty for all investors. The chapters are divided into four areas, which correspond roughly to the chronological process of investment. They are: general approvals, licenses, and registrations; specialized approvals; requirements to gain access to land, site development, and utility connections; and operational requirements. This publication will be of interest to government officials, academics, and investment firms.

Better

Melvin Bray

Chalice Press

What if we could actually change the world by telling better stories? What if the world we have-with its racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, religious hatred, ecological disregard-is exactly the world we have spun into existence through the stories we have told? In his new book, Melvin Bray insists that a better world is possible if the stories around which we organize our lives begin to match the beauty we imagine is possible. Bray puts forth his own daring yet faithful reimaginings of classic faith stories that inspire more beautiful, more just, more virtue-filled ways of being in the world. Better offers a spiritual path on which people-for whom life has called into question many of their assumptions about God and the world-can continue to hold onto their faith, while joining others of goodwill in seeking sustainable, cooperative, and courageous answers to the seemingly intractable problems of our time.
