Stephen Greenblatt is the most important exponent of 'new historicism', a dynamic critical movement which rejects the traditional reliance on individual canonical texts, exploring a multitude of other, more marginal works and voices. Questioning not just literary but social, political and cultural assumptions about knowledge and power, Greenblatt’s work has had a huge impact on contemporary theory.Mark Robson discusses ideas specific to particular works and explores the relation of Greenblatt’s thought to new historicism as well as other modes of criticism including the key topics of: contextcultural poeticspower, subversion and containmentthick descriptionanecdotes.Providing a starting point for readers new to this crucial theorist’s sometimes complex texts, or support for those deepening their understanding of his work, this guidebook is ideal for students in the fields of literary, history, social and cultural studies.

In the fall of 1925, young Allan Odell conceived the idea of using consecutive signs along the roadside. . . . In 1963 the last signs were taken down, ending the most famous outdoor advertising venture ever."--1977 Minnesota Almanac The whole story is in this book, plus all the jingles used. The signs are gone now, except for one set on permanent display at The Smithsonian. You can have them all, always, in your own library with this book. "Rowsome's volume indexes each of the 600 jingles . . . and as you down the list, preferably reading aloud, it might evoke visions of 1940 Chevies, roadside diners, signs that said EATS. . . . Why were the Burma-Shave jingles so universally loved? Because they were light-hearted and humorous in hard times and war times."--Bov Swift, Knight News Service

nidottu
An Introduction to Chemical Kinetics provides a gentle overview of the subject offering a comprehensive coverage of key topics needed for a clear understanding of the fundamental aspects of kinetics. Emphasis is placed on how experimental data is collected and manipulated to give standard kinetic quantities relating to rates of reaction. The book then moves on to interpret these quantities, and to develop mechanisms describing the chemical steps in a wide variety of reactions in both gas and solution phase. The student is carefully guided through the necessary theory, in particular looking at how and why reactions occur and the physical and chemical requirements for reaction. An invaluable text for students of chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmacy and biochemistry taking a first course in kinetics. This book will also be of interest to professionals in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry needing an accessible introduction to the subject. *Includes learning objectives, summary sections and end of chapter problems. *Step by step guidance and and clear explanation of topics. *Includes a wide variety of worked examples throughout. *Shows the relevance of kinetics to many areas of chemistry.

States of Separation

States of Separation

Laura Robson

University of California Press
2017
sidottu
Across the Middle East in the post-World War I era, European strategic moves converged with late Ottoman political practice and a newly emboldened Zionist movement to create an unprecedented push to physically divide ethnic and religious minorities from Arab Muslim majorities. States of Separation tells how the interwar Middle East became a site for internationally sanctioned experiments in ethnic separation enacted through violent strategies of population transfer and ethnic partition. During Britain's and France's interwar occupation of Iraq, Palestine, and Syria, the British and French mandate governments and the League of Nations undertook a series of varied but linked campaigns of ethnic removal and separation targeting the Armenian, Assyrian, and Jewish communities within these countries. Such schemes served simultaneously as a practical method of controlling colonial subjects and as a rationale for imposing a neo-imperial international governance, with long-standing consequences for the region. Placing the histories of Iraq, Palestine, and Syria within a global context of emerging state systems intent on creating new forms of international authority, in States of Separation Laura Robson sheds new light on the emergence of ethnic separatism in the modern Middle East.
Dressing Constitutionally

Dressing Constitutionally

Ruthann Robson

Cambridge University Press
2013
pokkari
This book examines how the intertwining of clothes and the United States Constitution raises fundamental questions of hierarchy, sexuality and democracy. Constitutional considerations both constrain and confirm daily choices. In turn, appearances provide multilayered perspectives on the Constitution and its interpretations. Garments often raise First Amendment issues of expression or religion, but they also prompt questions of equality on the basis of gender, race and sexuality. At work, in court, in schools, in prisons and on the streets, clothes and grooming provoke constitutional controversies. Additionally, the production, trade and consumption of apparel implicates constitutional concerns including colonial sumptuary laws, slavery, wage and hour laws, and current notions of free trade. The regulation of what we wear - or do not - is ubiquitous. From a noted constitutional scholar and commentator, this book examines the rights to expression and equality, as well as the restraints on government power, as they both limit and allow control of our most personal choices of attire and grooming.
