Opening Day: The Story of Jackie Robinson's First Season
This bestselling account of the most important season in baseball history, 1947, tells the dramatic story of how Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and changed baseball forever. April 15, 1947, marked the most important opening day in baseball history. When Jackie Robinson stepped onto the diamond that afternoon at Ebbets Field, he became the first black man to break into major-league baseball in the twentieth century. World War II had just ended. Democracy had triumphed. Now Americans were beginning to press for justice on the home front--and Robinson had a chance to lead the way. In Opening Day, Jonathan Eig tells the true story behind the national pastime's most sacred myth. He offers new insights into events of sixty years ago and punctures some familiar legends. Was it true that the St. Louis Cardinals plotted to boycott their first home game against the Brooklyn Dodgers? Was Pee Wee Reese really Robinson's closest ally on the team? Was Dixie Walker his greatest foe? How did Robinson handle the extraordinary stress of being the only black man in baseball and still manage to perform so well on the field? Opening Day is also the story of a team of underdogs that came together against tremendous odds to capture the pennant. Facing the powerful New York Yankees, Robinson and the Dodgers battled to the seventh game in one of the most thrilling World Series competitions of all time. Drawing on interviews with surviving players, sportswriters, and eyewitnesses, as well as newly discovered material from archives around the country, Jonathan Eig presents a fresh portrait of a ferocious competitor who embodied integration's promise and helped launch the modern civil-rights era. Full of new details and thrilling action, Opening Day brings to life baseball's ultimate story.

The field of genetics has changed considerably since the first edition of Genetics for Cat Breeders was published in 1971. For decades the discussion of genetics was limited to observations of populations but now geneticists are beginning to look at the actual molecular mechanisms behind the traits and diseases seen in the cat. Continuing the pioneering work of the late Roy Robinson, Carolyn Vella and her team of experts have significantly expanded the scope of previous editions to produce a work which is now of equal benefit to both veterinary surgeons and cat breeders. Their aim has been to make the book more accessible and understandable whilst providing an impartial look at sometimes controversial and complex issues. The book retains the most important information published in previous editions and also incorporates some of the continuing work done by Roy Robinson prior to his death. A considerable amount of new information has been added in order to provide both breeders and veterinarians with the broadest possible range of information. The authors have not only reviewed the traditional sources of scientific literature and recently published studies, but have also conducted interviews with veterinarians, researchers and breeders. * The 4th edition of Roy Robinson's established text on cat genetics has been updated by a team of specialists to reflect a decade of changes and advances in genetic research * The authorship now includes a practising veterinarian as well as experienced cat breeders, thus making this new edition useful at both veterinary and breeder levels * New technical and historical appendices contain important reference material and a glossary has been added for ease of reference

The Brooklyn destination the "New York Times" called "one of the most extraordinary restaurants in the country"--which began as a pizza place and quickly redefined the urban food landscape--releases its highly anticipated debut cookbook. When Roberta's opened in 2008 in a concrete bunker in Bushwick, it was a pizzeria where you could stop in for dinner and stumble out hours later, happy. It's still a down-the-rabbit-hole kind of place but has also become a destination for groundbreaking food, a wholly original dining experience, and a rooftop garden that marked the beginning of the urban farming movement in New York City. The forces behind Roberta's--chef Carlo Mirarchi and co-owners Brandon Hoy and Chris Parachini--share recipes, photographs, and stories meant to capture the experience of Roberta's for those who haven't been, and to immortalize it for those who've been there since the beginning.

Robicheaux's Roots

Robicheaux's Roots

James Lee Burke developed the character of Cajun detective Dave Robicheaux through twenty mystery novels published over three decades. Despite readers' increasing interest in Detective Robicheaux, his habits and preferences originate from a culture still unfamiliar to many of the books' fans. In Robicheaux's Roots, Patricia M. Gaitely explores the music, food, language, and folklore of southwest Louisiana and illuminates the cultural sources that Burke incorporated into this gripping series.Part of Robicheaux's appeal, Gaitely shows, rests in his connection to his hometown of New Iberia, with its faults, charm, and reliance on the old ways. Multiple cultural strands coexist in this region, including Creole and Cajun French dialect; African American folk sayings; swamp pop, zydeco, and blues music; and voodoo, Catholicism, evangelicalism, and faith healing. These aspects of Cajun life weave throughout Robicheaux's world. The commingling of so many traditions provides multiple meanings for even the most common encounters- water can be both natural element and medium between living and dead; and gumbo, jambalaya, and crawfish may represent more than simply regional foods. Additionally, Gaitely demonstrates that beneath the pleasant veneer of southern hospitality, a persistent legacy of violence and vengeance leaves a lasting mark on the lives of Robicheaux and the other characters.Robicheaux's Roots reveals how elements of south Louisiana's culture signal a sense of belonging but also recall the area's history of isolation. As a result, readers gain a deeper understanding of Robicheaux himself and an enhanced appreciation for Burke's acclaimed series.

Robert Penn Warren is one of the best-known and most consequential Kentucky writers of the twentieth century and the only American writer to have won three Pulitzers in two different genres. All the King's Men, generally considered one of the finest novels ever written on American politics, transcends sensationalism and topicality to stand as art. It was a bestseller, won the Pulitzer Prize, and became an Academy Award--winning movie. Depicting the rise and fall of a dictatorial southern politician -- modeled on Huey Long of Louisiana -- the timeless story and memorable characters raise questions about the importance of history, moral conflicts in public policy, and idealism in government. In Robert Penn Warren's All the King's Men: A Reader's Companion, author Jonathan S. Cullick considers the themes of this famous novel within the context of America's current political climate. He addresses the novel's continuing relevance and interviews a cross-section of elected and appointed officials, as well as journalists, in Kentucky to explore how Warren's novel has influenced their work and approach to politics.By focusing on what Warren's novel has to say about power, populism, ethics, and the force of rhetoric, Cullick encourages readers to think about their own identities and responsibilities as American citizens. This volume promises to be not only an indispensable companion to All the King's Men but it also provides context and a new diverse set of perspectives from which to understand this seminal novel.

Richard S. Kennedy

University of Missouri Press
1993
sidottu
Asolando, Robert Browning's final volume of poetry, was, when first published in 1889 - on the day of his death, deemed as ""charming"" by reviewers. Richard Kennedy asserts that ""Asolando"" was a fitting cap to this great poet's career. In this text, Kennedy fuses biography and critical commentary to provide a account of this poet's last years and his last volume of poems. Kennedy describes how Browning experienced a creative resurgence during the final years of his life, a period influenced by his association with the Amerian widow Katharine Bronson. After an introductory overview of those productive years, Kennedy provides critical commentary - sometimes analytical, and often judgmental - on each of the poems, indicating how they are representative of Browning's ideas and practices. Chapters are devoted to Browning's personal poems, his love poems, and those on religion, philosophy, and art. A selection of the poems from this text is reprinted in the appendix, and photographs, sketches, and reproductions of artworks complement the text throughout, offering insight into the last years of this poet's life. This book is aimed at readers who love poetry as well as at experts in Romantic and Victorian literature.
Postmodernism of Resistance in Roberto Bolaño's Fiction and Poetry

Postmodernism of Resistance in Roberto Bolaño's Fiction and Poetry

Postmodernism of Resistance in Roberto Bolaño's Fiction and Poetry examines the ways in which Bolaño employs a type of literary aesthetics that subverts traits traditionally associated with postmodernism. Pasten B. coins these aesthetics "postmodernism of resistance" and argues that this resistance stands in direct opposition to critical discourses that construe the presence of hopeless characters and marginal settings in Bolaño's works as signs of the writer's disillusionment with the political as a consequence of the defeat of the Left in Latin America. Rather, he contends, Bolaño creates a fictional world comprised of characters and situations that paradoxically refuse to accept defeat - even while displaying the scars of terrible historical events. In this work Pasten B. challenges some critical assumptions about Bolaño's fiction and poetry that led to decontextualized interpretations of his work and offers a singularly comprehensive investigation that synthesizes multiple perspectives of a complicated author into one text.
