Complex and unexplained phenomena tend to foster unorthodox perspectives. This publication is an example, as is a prior publication that emphasized the concept that intermediary metabolism might play a significant and determining role in hepatocyte proliferation and 1 tumorigenesis. Formulation of this hypothesis was based on an attempt to clarify several poorly understood phenomena; including the observations: 1) that xenobiotic peroxisome proliferators such as the fibrate hypolipidemic agents induce hepatocyte proliferation and carcinogenesis in rodents; 2) that benign and malignant liver tumors complicate the human syndrome of glycogen storage disease type I (glucose-6-phosphatase deficiency); and 3) that in this same syndrome, administration of glucose exerts an anti-tumor effect. Fatty acid and glucose metabolism are tightly linked in a we- established and profoundly inportant interplay. This connection, together with the fact that peroxisome proliferator-induced hepatocyte proliferation and carcinogenesis reflects inhibition of mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase-I and fatty acid oxidation, suggested the possibility that regulation of fatty acid metabolism could prove to be a pivotal determinant in the control of cell growth. In 1993, the year in which the paper cited above was published, insight into the importance of growth factors and signal transduction pathways in cell cycle regulation was increasing rapidly, but metabolic and energetic aspects of cell proliferation had attracted relatively little attention. Despite this, the concept seemed inescapable that the two seemingly distinct and unrelated determinants — signal transduction and metabolism — were integrally linked.

It is a distinct pleasure to have the opportunity to introduce Professor Malliavin's book to the English-speaking mathematical world. In recent years there has been a noticeable retreat from the level of ab­ straction at which graduate-level courses in analysis were previously taught in the United States and elsewhere. In contrast to the practices used in the 1950s and 1960s, when great emphasis was placed on the most general context for integration and operator theory, we have recently witnessed an increased emphasis on detailed discussion of integration over Euclidean space and related problems in probability theory, harmonic analysis, and partial differential equations. Professor Malliavin is uniquely qualified to introduce the student to anal­ ysis with the proper mix of abstract theories and concrete problems. His mathematical career includes many notable contributions to harmonic anal­ ysis, complex analysis, and related problems in probability theory and par­ tial differential equations. Rather than developed as a thing-in-itself, the abstract approach serves as a context into which special models can be couched. For example, the general theory of integration is developed at an abstract level, and only then specialized to discuss the Lebesgue measure and integral on the real line. Another important area is the entire theory of probability, where we prefer to have the abstract model in mind, with no other specialization than total unit mass. Generally, we learn to work at an abstract level so that we can specialize when appropriate.

From its inception in 1983, ESPRIT (the European Strategic Programme for Research and Development in Information Technology) has aimed at improving the competitiveness of European industry and providing it with the technology needed for the 1990s. Esprit Project 623, on which most of the work presented in this book is based, was one of the key projects in the ESPRIT area, Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). From its beginnings in 1985, it brought together a team of researchers from industry, research institutes and universities to explore and develop a critical stream of advanced manufacturing technology that would be timely and mature for industrial exploitation in a five year time frame. The synergy of cross border collaboration between technology users and vendors has led to results ranging from new and improved products to training courses given at universities. The subject of Esprit Project 623 was the integration of robots into manufacturing environments. Robots are a vital element in flexible automation and can contribute substantially to manufacturing efficiency. The project had two main themes, off-line programming and robot system planning. Off-line programming enlarges the application area of robots and opens up new possibilities in domains such as laser cutting, and other hazardous operations. Reported benefits obtained from off-line program­ ming include: - significant cost reductions because re-programming eliminates robot down-time; - faster production cycles, in some cases time-savings of up to 85% are reported; - the optimal engineering of products with improved quality.
