New Concepts on Abdominoplasty and Further Applications
This book documents the important advances that have been achieved in abdominoplasty over the past 15 years, in particular through the introduction of a nontraumatic approach associated with minimal morbidity owing to the avoidance of resection of abdominal panniculus and damage to the perforating vessels. The surgical principles of this procedure, including in combination with liposuction, are fully described by its developer, Juarez Avelar, with the aid of a wealth of color illustrations. A miniabdominoplasty option is also discussed and recent significant technical contributions such as various new plication techniques and means of minimizing complications are clearly presented. In addition, a series of chapters explain how the surgical principles underlying the described nontraumatic method of abdominoplasty can now be applied to other areas of the body, for example to improve rhytidoplasty, ear reconstruction, body contouring, and medial thigh lifting. This book enables the plastic surgeon to apply the latest abdominoplasty techniques effectively and safely.
New Concepts in ECG Interpretation

New Concepts in ECG Interpretation

Springer International Publishing AG
2018
sidottu
This book elucidates a number of new concepts on P-wave evaluation and QRS depolarization properties, and reports on several repolarization findings never covered in previous ECG books. The content is primarily based on case reports, some of which are compared in order to reveal their ostensibly small but significant differences. The book addresses a significant and lingering gap in ECG interpretation, which is the actual cause of many poor decisions in the diagnostic and therapeutic contexts. Further, the book has an interdisciplinary appeal, and will be of equal interest to professionals and scholars with an interest in cardiology and ECG interpretation.
New Concepts in Pathology and Treatment of Autoimmune Disorders

New Concepts in Pathology and Treatment of Autoimmune Disorders

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K
2001
sidottu
Autoimmunity, characterized by autoreactive lymphocytes and autoantibodies, is the consequence of a failure to discriminate between self and non-self, and autoimmune diseases are an increasing threat to people living in the industrialized countries. Autoimmune disorders are treatable, but not curable, and patients can face disability at later stages of the disease. Thus, there is a medical and economic need for new concepts and treatments in autoimmune disorders. New concepts and treatments can only be achieved by an interdisciplinary approach bringing together expertise, technologies, and clinical experience. The workshop focused on multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and type I diabetes, and discussed conventional drug therapies, gene therapy, cell and tissue transplantation therapies, and first treatments using blood stem cells for reprogramming the patients' immune system.

This volume is a compendium of papers presented during the International Workshop on Air Traffic Management, which took place in Capri, Italy, on September 26-30, 1999. The workshop was organized by Italian National Research Council in co-operation with the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This was the fifth in a series of meetings held periodically over a ten-year span for the purpose of encouraging an exchange of views and fmdings by scientists in the field of Air Traffic Management (A TM). The papers presented at the workshop dealt with a wide range of topics and covered different aspects that are currently important in Air Traffic Control and Air Traffic Management. This volume contains only a subset of the papers presented, namely the ones that addressed the main area emphasis in the workshop, new concepts and methods. The subject of the first two papers is Collaborative Decision Making (CDM), a concept which embodies, to a large extent, the new philosophy of partial decentralization and increased delegation of responsibilities to users in A TM operations. In the first of these papers Wambsganss describes the original CDM project and its initial implementation in the form of the Ground Delay Program Enhancements. He also provides a brief description of some of the tools that have been developed as part of the CDM effort and identifies future research and development requirements.

During the last few years, parallel object-relational database management systems have emerged as the leading data management technology on the market. These systems are extensible by user-defined data types and user-defined functionality for the data. This work focuses on the efficient parallel execution of user-defined functionality. The main contributions describe techniques to support data parallelism for user-defined scalar and aggregate functions and intra-function parallelism for the execution of a scalar function on a large object, and a new technology to provide extensibility with regard to new set-oriented database operations that can efficiently implement user-defined functionality in parallel object-relational database management systems.

New Concepts and Applications in Soft Computing

New Concepts and Applications in Soft Computing

The book provides a sample of research on the innovative theory and applications of soft computing paradigms. The idea of Soft Computing was initiated in 1981 when Professor Zadeh published his first paper on soft data analysis and constantly evolved ever since. Professor Zadeh defined Soft Computing as the fusion of the fields of fuzzy logic (FL), neural network theory (NN) and probabilistic reasoning (PR), with the latter subsuming belief networks, evolutionary computing including DNA computing, chaos theory and parts of learning theory into one multidisciplinary system. As Zadeh said the essence of soft computing is that unlike the traditional, hard computing, soft computing is aimed at an accommodation with the pervasive imprecision of the real world. Thus, the guiding principle of soft computing is to exploit the tolerance for imprecision, uncertainty and partial truth to achieve tractability, robustness, low solution cost and better rapport with reality. In the final analysis, the role model for soft computing is the human mind. We hope that the reader will share our excitement and find our volume both useful and inspiring.

New Concepts in Maxillofacial Bone Surgery

New Concepts in Maxillofacial Bone Surgery

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K
2011
nidottu
The present volume is concerned with bone surgery in the area of the facial skeleton. We find this branch of maxillofacial surgery espe- cially challenging because in our work within the Surgical Depart- ment of the University of Basle, we are constantly being confronted with the principles of internal fixation - in the care of poly- 1 traumatized patients, in organizing joint AO-ASIF courses or dur- ing trauma conferences. The problems of fracture disease and the unpleasant sequelae of unanatomical healing are by no means alien to maxillofacial surgery. Our main aim is to broaden our experience of the basic principles of stable anatomical fixation and early function in this branch of trauma and corrective surgery. It soon became apparent that pri- mary healing of fractures and osteotomies, as well as undisturbed re- vascularization of bone transplants and long-term tolerance of inert implants and joint prostheses depend on the stability of fixation un- der preload.
New Concepts in Viral Heart Disease

New Concepts in Viral Heart Disease

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K
2013
nidottu
The recent rapid advances in our knowledge of immunological and virological mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of viral heart disease makes it difficult for everybody working in this field to keep up with the latest developments. How ever, much of what we know is still circumstantial and only vaguely substained. Interdisciplinary understanding and cooperation thus seems necessary to get a better insight into the mechanisms by which viruses may initiate immunological organ-specific tissue injury and disease! This volume evolved out of an international symposium by the same title held on May 25. -28. , 1988 in Tegernsee, near Munich, of which a wide spectrum ofim munological, virological, diagnostical and clinical problems was covered. Both review articles and new experimental and clinical data are included in this volume to give the reader an up-to-date information about current concepts and future aspects. Chapter I serves as an excellent introduction to the epidemiology and natural history of dilated cardiomyopathy / viral heart disease. Although a definite viral etiology in myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy is often difficult to establish, epidemiological and serological data incriminate a viral etiology underlying many cases of "dilated cardiomyopathy". Chapters II and III describe the current think ing on virological and immunological mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of viral heart disease. Among others virus topism, virus persistance, possible mecha nisms and genetic basis of post-infection autoimmunity, and the virus-interaction with the immune system are discussed.

New concepts in geological sciences, chemistry and materials science
This book is the second extended and significantly supplemented edition of the previously published monograph "New Ideas in Crystal Chemistry, Mineralogy, Geochemistry and Materials Science". The new book summarises the results of four previous books and other works of the author on the topic entitled "New Ideas in Crystal Chemistry, Mineralogy, Geochemistry and Material Science" with the presentation of new ideas and approaches. Among the many additions, we will highlight the most important, in our opinion, of undoubted scientific importance. We are talking about the new version of the Mendeleev Table, which most adequately reveals the essence of the periodicity of elements discovered by Mendeleev. And as we know, this law (in the form of a corresponding table) is the basic foundation of modern physics, chemistry and the adjacent sciences.
