The prospect of entering treatment is overwhelming for anyone facing a diagnosis of cancer. While patients have access to a vast amount of medical information online, this advice is often unreliable or confusing. In Living with Cancer, Drs. Vicki A. Jackson and David P. Ryan have crafted the first step-by-step guide aimed at helping people with this life-defining disease grasp what's happening to them while coping physically and emotionally with cancer treatment. An empathetic resource full of relatable patient stories, this book teaches patients and caregivers how to ask the right questions to get the best possible care-beginning at the moment of diagnosis. Drs. Jackson and Ryan explain how to work with a team of doctors and nurse practitioners to minimize symptoms and side effects while living as fully as possible in the face of cancer. They relay important information about understanding prognosis, and they translate what doctors mean when they describe tests, treatments, and medical procedures. Finally, they discuss hospice care and answer questions about continuing treatment and managing the final phase of life. Based on new research and a groundbreaking program in which patients are treated with palliative care-along with the best cancer care-during the course of their illness, this honest and caring book provides the right advice to use at the right time throughout a journey with cancer. It allows a person with cancer to concentrate on living the best life possible, despite an uncertain future. Patients at every stage will find Living with Cancer a comprehensive, thoughtful, and accessible guide for navigating the illness and its treatment.

The definitive book on what is known about the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene archaeological record in the Southeast The 1996 benchmark volume The Paleoindian and Early Archaic Southeast, edited by David G. Anderson and Kenneth E. Sassaman, was the first study to summarize what was known of the peoples who lived in the Southeast when ice sheets covered the northern part of the continent and mammals such as mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and ground sloths roamed the landscape. The American Southeast at the End of the Ice Age provides an updated, definitive synthesis of current archaeological research gleaned from an array of experts in the region. It is organized in three parts: state records, the regional perspective, and reflections and future directions. Chapters survey a diversity of topics including the distribution of the earliest archaeological sites in the region, chipped-stone tool technology, the expanding role of submerged archaeology, hunter-gatherer lifeways, past climate changes and the extinction of megafauna on the transitional landscape, and evidence of demographic changes at the end of the Ice Age. Discussion of the ethical responsibilities regarding the use of private collections and the relationship of archaeologists and the avocational community, insight from outside the Southeast, and considerations for future research round out the volume.

Using pagan prose fiction produced in Greek and Latin during the early Christian era, Bowersock investigates the complex relationship among perceived and presented 'historical' and 'fictional' truths. Bowersock's superb lecturing style is successfully transferred into writing with force and eloquence, as he weaves accounts from a wide range of sources into his text, illuminating social attitudes of the period and persuasively arguing that fiction of the period was influenced by the emerging Christian Gospel narratives. In the second half of the first century emerges a new kind of fiction including outlandish tales of travel, romance and comic novels. Bowersock concentrates on secular literature, illuminating not only its literary motifs, but also reconstructing the societal context as one engrossed in fabrications and all kinds of revisions or rewriting. Using these less familiar materials as his points of reference, he reads into familiar Christian material, making linkages and casting new light on familiar subjects, as well as providing some provocative interpretations of familiar Christian texts. Bowersock uses close historical and literary analyses of specific passages of works, and pays attention to larger and more general issues and questions around the relationship between fiction and history and how we read them. This book will be of basic intellectual concern to all raised in the environment of Christian belief.

A spin-off of The Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry R.F.D. became successful in its own right. The show aired from 1969 through 1971 and was consistently in the top 15 of the Nielsen ratings. Its demise was caused by the sudden elimination of rural-oriented series by CBS in 1971 in order to make room for more "realistic" fare. The show's popularity owed much to the casting; George Lindsey (playing Goober Pyle), Jack Dodson (Howard Sprague), Paul Hartman (Emmett Clark), Ken Berry (Sam Jones), and others who moved seamlessly from The Andy Griffith Show to the new series. Episode-by-episode, this is the definitive reference to Mayberry R.F.D. Each entry provides episode title, writer, director, regular and guest cast, and numerous other facts about it. Capsule biographies of guest stars are given within the entry for the initial episode in which they worked, while more detailed biographies of the writers, directors, and major stars follow the episode guide.
A Critical Edition of Anthony Munday`s Palmerin d`Oliva

A Critical Edition of Anthony Munday`s Palmerin d`Oliva

This is an original-spelling, critical edition of Anthony Munday’s (1560–1633) translation of Palmerín de Olivia, an anonymous Iberian chivalric romance published in 1511 — here conjecturally attributed to a female author — that was also translated into Dutch, French, and Italian during the early modern period. Munday translated it into English not directly from the Spanish original, but instead using Jean Maugin’s French version (printed in 1546) as his source text, while also consulting Mambrino Roseo da Fabriano’s Italian rendition. The English Palmerin d’Oliva, first published in 1588 in two parts, was printed at least five times by 1637 but has not been reissued since then. Therefore, this volume now presents the English Palmerin d’Oliva to modern-day readers for the first time since 1637. The editorial standards of this MLA-approved edition exceed the corpus of Iberian romances of chivalry. The method followed aims to present the English text in a form as close as possible to its authorial inscription as can be recovered from the extant printed editions and other textual witnesses. All editorial interventions and departures from the copy-text are recorded in the textual apparatus and intended to restore authorial intentions, eliminate textual corruption, and present authoritative readings. Thus, the critical text is accompanied by a comprehensive textual apparatus that guarantees the traceability of all editorial decisions and provides readers with all the evidence needed for accessing the entire printed tradition of this romance. Edited with an introduction, critical apparatus, notes, and glossary by Jordi Sánchez-Martí
