A Year in the Life of the P&O Cruises Fleet

For most people, a week or two aboard a cruise ship offers the chance to explore several different ports while travelling in comfort and luxury and enjoying the facilities on board. However, behind the scenes, the infrastructure of a small city is provided to ensure there is light and power, food and drink, propulsion, waste disposal and laundry as well as a myriad of other services and functions that ensure the ship gets to its destinations on time. So, how does it work? What really happens behind the scenes? Sharon Poole and Andrew Sassoli-Walker have been given unprecedented access to the seven ships of the P&O Cruises' fleet as, with contributions from passengers, officers, crew and shoreside staff, they go into the planning and execution of a year's travel aboard a P&O Cruises' ship. Starting with ensuring the itineraries are in place, berths are booked at destinations and that brochures are ready, they then look at the ships themselves, covering everything you would expect to see on a normal cruise, as well as many of the behind-the-scenes activities that make a P&O Cruise a relaxed and exciting experience for all passengers.

A Passage to India: Introduction by P. N. Furbank
A beautiful Everyman's Library Contemporary Classics hardcover edition of one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, with an introduction by P. N. Furbank. Britain's three-hundred-year relationship with the Indian subcontinent produced much fiction of interest but only one indisputable masterpiece of English literature: E. M. Forster's A Passage to India, published in 1924, at the height of the Indian independence movement. Centering on an ambiguous incident between a young Englishwoman of uncertain stability and an Indian doctor eager to know the English better, Forster's book explores, with unexampled profundity, both the historical chasm between colonizer and colonized and the eternal one between individuals struggling to ease their isolation and make sense of their humanity. Everyman's Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket. Contemporary Classics include an introduction, a select bibliography, and a chronology of the author's life and times.

"Please, sir, it's about my salary." His age was twenty-two and his name was Roland Bleke. Mr. Fineberg, at his word, drew himself together much as a British square at Waterloo must have drawn itself together at the sight of a squadron of cuirassiers. "Salary?" he cried. "What about it? What's the matter with it? You get it, don't you?" "Yes, sir, but --" "Well? Don't stand there like an idiot. What is it?" "It's too much." Mr. Fineberg's brain reeled. It was improbable that the millennium could have arrived with a jerk; on the other hand, he had distinctly heard one of his clerks complain that his salary was too large. . . .

This volume contains an edition of P. Brooklyn 47.218.135, a papyrus dated to the fifth or fourth century b.c. in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum. Despite the relatively poor state of preservation, the papyrus contains a wisdom text of considerable interest, as it is one of the few literary works written in the hieratic script known from the Late period. It displays similarities with both the earlier pharaonic and the later Demotic compositions. Classicists and biblical scholars will certainly also wish to consider possible connections with Hellenistic and biblical wisdom traditions. The volume contains a hieroglyphic transcription, consecutive translation, philological commentary, glossary, bibliography, plates, and a discussion by the author of the script, grammar, content, and significance of the text.
