Chekhov: A Biography is a comprehensive and insightful account of the life and work of the Russian writer Anton Chekhov. Written by Ernest J. Simmons, a noted Chekhov scholar, the book delves into the personal and professional experiences that shaped Chekhov's career as a playwright, short story writer, and physician. The biography begins with Chekhov's childhood and early years, tracing his development as a writer and his eventual rise to fame in the literary world. It explores his relationships with family and friends, as well as his romantic entanglements and his struggles with illness.Simmons also provides a detailed analysis of Chekhov's literary output, examining the themes and styles that distinguish his work from that of his contemporaries. He explores Chekhov's use of realism and his innovative approach to character development, as well as his exploration of themes such as love, death, and the human condition.Throughout the book, Simmons draws on a wealth of primary sources, including Chekhov's letters, diaries, and personal papers, as well as the recollections of his friends and colleagues. The result is a richly detailed and engaging portrait of one of the most important writers of the modern era. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

The book provides case studies for reflection in a broad array of situations that that provosts must deal with. The short scenarios and case studies are useful for thinking about problems or issues in advance and considering options that might be available. When analyzing circumstances, readers may find it useful to identify setting aspects that apply to their institutions. While there are differences in involvement, actions and outcomes, each case provides multiple connectors and situational insights for a provost. The book presents tips on deciding to become a provost, interviewing successfully, and managing the “honeymoon” period in a new position. It addresses challenges unique to the provost, such as balancing academic and institutional priorities or leading from a perspective of diversity. Questions on assessing the “fit” of your team and creating a shared vision of academic affairs are probed through example. Collaborations across other divisions of the university and the provost’s role in shared governance guide the reader to examine how to lead change. Leading change is having a vision for the academy and provosts are agents of power outside of their own institutions who shape the dialog of future higher education.

Skinny Women Are Not Created Equal: Weight Loss Surgery in a Commercial Diet World.
So many people that have known me for most of my life who see me now, have said to me, "What happened to youuu? " When I tell them that I lost more than 120lbs. they say, "Girl, that's wonderful How'd you do it?" When I say, "I tried every weight loss program out there and decided to have weight loss surgery..." They back up, "Wwwwhat? Really? You took the easy way out " Surgery is never the easy way out. After the surgery you have a lifetime of work to keep you at the weight that you desire. If you decide to take on a commercial diet program, you still have a plan that you have to work to follow. So to say that the surgery is the easier road, is absolutely ridiculous The only difference in my opinion is that you were desperate and serious enough to allow doctors to go into your body and alter your stomach so that you are forced to begin the change that you desire. If you don't comply, it's painful both physical as well as mental. The purpose for this book is to encourage and inspire you to rediscover who you are. I don't want you to look at the big picture and get overwhelmed. Just look at the little picture and work on that a step at a time. While there are many experiences, I want you to get my step by step experiences and hopefully something in my story will help you to conquer your weight concerns once and for all. Maybe you have already had weight loss surgery and it was successful. But maybe you've had it and you've gained your weight back. Perhaps you are not going that route at all and have decided to try one of the many commercial diet programs out there, or still maybe you have tried them all like me and nothing has worked and you are at a loss. Maybe you are considering weight loss surgery but the thought frightens you. Whatever the case, my endeavors are not to persuade you either way on the surgery but to give you insight on my journey through commercial diets and then through surgery. I want to give you a little information on both and you make the decision on your own.

In the last hours of Halloween he has returned to the dying town of Elm Haven, his boyhood home, where he hopes to find peace in isolation. But moving into a long-deserted farmhouse on the far outskirts of town -- the one-time residence of a strange and brilliant friend who lost his young life in a grisly "accident" back in the terrible summer of 1960 -- is only the latest in his long succession of recent mistakes. Because Dale is not alone here. He has been followed to this house of shadows by private demons who are now twisting his reality into horrifying new forms. And a thick, blanketing early snow is starting to fall ...
