Alain Badiou
Alain Badiou (b. 1937) is the most influential—and controversial—contemporary French philosopher. Since the publication of his magnum opus, L’être et l’évenement (Being and Event), in 1988, Badiou has emerged as a thinker whose scope and depth equal those of Derrida, Deleuze, and Foucault. The significance of Badiou’s thought, the editors of this new Routledge title argue, consists in breaking decisively with the legacies of post-Heideggerean phenomenology and French poststructuralism. Most controversially, they say, Badiou reaffirms the Platonic bond between philosophy and mathematics, and draws on mathematical resources to effect a rehabilitation of the universal. Although critically contested, Badiou’s reactivation of the power of the universal imbues his thought with a synoptic scope rare in academic philosophy. (Indeed, his work is informed by innovations in contemporary politics, music, drama, literature, and cinema, as well as by developments in contemporary mathematics, and this breadth of cultural references may explain why Badiou’s often difficult works appeal to non-academic readers, and why they have been translated into so many languages.) Furthermore, Badiou’s commitment to egalitarian politics is unwavering and he is a key source of inspiration for political activists not only in Europe and North America, but also in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.Over the past several decades, many evaluations of Badiou and his work have emerged: from his encounters with Plato, St Paul, Spinoza, Kant, Hegel, Heidegger, Wittgenstein, Althusser, Lacan, and Deleuze, to his appropriation of mathematics, politics, and art. Some of this literature—widely dispersed across edited collections, journals, and other periodicals, and not all of it currently available in English translation—is characterized by painstaking engagement; some of it is highly polemical. Now, to help researchers and students distinguish the useful from the tendentious and to enable them to navigate and make better sense of this complex body of scholarship, Routledge announces Alain Badiou, a new addition to its Critical Assessments of Leading Philosophers series. Edited by Ray Brassier and Alberto Toscano, two leading experts, this four-volume ‘mini library’ is a carefully curated compendium of all the most significant Badiouian secondary literature.

Belle dame sans merci (Beautiful lady with no mercy) (1424) is not readily available in moden English translation elsewhere, making this an essential addition to any library with a medieval literature or French literature collection.

Among the most innovative and influential filmmakers of the twentieth century, Alain Resnais (1922-2014) did not originally set out to become a director. He trained as an actor and film editor and, during the sixty-eight years of his working life, delved into virtually every corner of filmmaking, working at one time or another as screenwriter, assistant director, camera operator and cinematographer, special effects coordinator, technical consultant, and even author of source material. From such award-winning documentaries as Van Gogh and Night and Fog to the groundbreaking dramas Hiroshima mon amour, Last Year at Marienbad, and Muriel, Resnais's films experiment with such themes as consciousness, memory, and the imagination. Distinguishing himself from associations with the French New Wave movement, Resnais considered his films to be ""anti-illusionist,"" never allowing his spectators to forget they were watching a work of art.In Alain Resnais: Interviews, editor Lynn A. Higgins collects twenty-one interviews with the filmmaker, twelve of which are translated into English for the first time. Spanning his entire career from his early short subjects to his final feature film, the volume highlights Resnais's creative strategies and principles, illuminates his place in world cinema history, and situates his work relative to the New Wave, American film, and experimental filmmaking more broadly. Like his films, the interviews collected here reveal a creator who is at once an intellectual, a philosopher, an entertainer, a craftsman, and an artist.

Few European male actors have been as iconic and influential for generations of filmgoers as Alain Delon. Emblematic of a modern, European masculinity, Delon’s appeal spanned cultures and continents. From his breakthrough as the first on-screen Tom Ripley in Purple Noon in 1960, through two legendary performances in Rocco and His Brothers and The Leopard in the early 1960s, to his roles in some of Jean-Pierre Melville’s most celebrated films noirs, Delon came to embody the flair and stylishness of the European thriller as one of France’s most recognizable film stars. This collection examines the star’s career, image and persona. Not only focusing on his spectacular early performances, the book also considers less well documented aspects of Delon’s long career such as his time in Hollywood, his work as director, producer and screenwriter, his musical collaborations, his TV appearances, and his enduring role as a fashion icon in the 21st century. Whether the object of reverence or ridicule, of desire or disdain, Delon remains a unique figure who continues to court controversy and fascination more than five decades after he first achieved international fame.

Halloween with Alain Bao Phan: Bikini Girl - End of the Hallway
Dear cherished readers, the stories that I am about to tell you, I have kept to myself for the last twenty-five years. To be honest, to this day, I am still unsure if what happened was reality, or just a figment of my imagination. But alas, Halloween is near, and I wish to tell my tale - to relieve this burden from my heart, and to offer you, my readers, a contemplation of the dark side ...

Placing Robbe-Grillet’s filmic oeuvre in the related contexts of both his novelistic work and the different historical and cultural periods in which his films were made, from the early 1960s to the present, the book traces lines of influence and continuity throughout his work, which is shown to exhibit a consistent preoccupation with an identifiable body of themes, motifs and structures. Close readings of all the films are skilfully combined with a thematic approach, ranging across the entire filmic corpus. The book also contains chapters on cinematography and technique. Now available in paperback, this lucid, comprehensive and fascinating study shows Robbe-Grillet’s contribution to the evolution of the cinematic art both in France and internationally to have been considerably more important than previously acknowledged.

Alain Badiou is one of the world's most influential living philosophers. Few contemporary thinkers display his breadth of argument and reference, or his ability to intervene in debates critical to both analytic and continental philosophy. Alain Badiou: Key Concepts presents an overview of and introduction to the full range of Badiou's thinking. Essays focus on the foundations of Badiou's thought, his "key concepts" - truth, being, ontology, the subject, and conditions - and on his engagement with a range of thinkers central to his philosophy, including Plato, Descartes, Spinoza, Heidegger and Deleuze.
