This book examines how the principal British maritime industries - shipping, shipbuilding and ports - adapted, or failed to adapt, to a changing world in the period 1918 to 1990, and discusses their reactions to the great opportunities seemingly offered by offshore oil and gas from the mid-1960s. At the outbreak of World War I, Britain's maritime industries still dominated the world. The British merchant fleet was by far the largest in the world, the nation's shipbuilding output eclipsed all rivals, and British ports were busy and expanding. By 1990, British shipping was a shadow of its former self, shipbuilding seemed on the verge of total collapse, and although the ports had been modernised, trade was concentrated at only a few of them. For almost four centuries, these industries had been of vital importance to Britain's wealth and power, but by 1990, politicians scarcely gave them a second thought.

The emphasis, as in the first edition, is on understanding mechanisms of sublethal effects on fish and their responses to these environmental stressors. The first chapter covers the basic principles involved in understanding how fish respond, in general, to environmental alterations. Each subsequent chapter is devoted to a particular organ system or physiological function and begins with a short overview of normal physiology of that system/function. This is followed by a review of how various toxic chemicals may alter normal conditions in fish. Chapters covering environmental hypoxia, behavior, cellular enzymes, and acid toxicity are also included. The book closes with a discussion on the practical application of physiological and biochemical measurements of fish in water pollution control in research and regulatory settings.

The quantity and variety of local history resources available on the internet continues to increase exponentially, and these resources are now not only very valuable as research tools but for much local history work have become simply essential. This booklet identifies 1000 websites which are potentially of major value and great interest to local historians in Britain-some 430 of these being newly included in this edition. It is of course selective-no listing of this sort could possibly be anything else-and it will unavoidably be outdated quite quickly, as addresses change and sites are closed. However, regular updates will be made. Indeed, for this edition over 210 previous entries have been deleted, mostly because the websites no longer function satisfactorily, or they are untraceable and presumed deleted, or they have been absorbed into a different website. Every site has been checked online and website addresses have been updated as required.

All ruminants are dependent on the microorganisms that live in their forestomach - the rumen - to break down ingested feed constituents into a form that the host animal can utilize.
