Lyulph Stanley, the uncle of Bertrand Russell, was an influential and articulate aristocrat who believed that every child should learn from a good teacher in a comfortable building. He championed the school board cause during the latter half of the Victorian era, a time of tremendous educational change in England. With the great increase in urban populations, the schooling provided by voluntary organizations had become inadequate. The state had taken control of education, working through its local representatives, the elected school boards. But controversy arose between churches, which were opposed to secular education, and school boards, and between local and central authorities. The author follows Stanley's political career, clarifying the views of the school board supporters and analyzing the political differences underlying the controversies. Students of education, history, and politics can benefit from his contribution to the re-assessment of this turbulent period in English educational history.
Composition as a Cultural Practice

Composition as a Cultural Practice

France presents a comprehensive critique of composition theory and pedagogy from a leftist perspective. He contests the notion that composition courses have no content and are only skills courses, devoid of intellectual suppositions and cultural premises. Writing instructors should therefore focus on teaching students how to retextualize contemporary cultural practices and become proficient in dissenting from as well as affirming the status quo. Each chapter extends the argument for a critical composition practice from theory into explicit, detailed narratives of composition techniques and analysis. Issues covered are the implicit ideology and curricular function of composition, the definition of a materialist rhetoric, the place of feminism in the writing classroom, the interrogation of dominant ideology in business and professional writing courses, the critique of knowledge making in the context of social-epistemic pedagogy, and the historical and rhetorical relations of religion to persuasion.

Therapists are increasingly called to court to testify as practitioners or expert witnesses. How does a non-legally trained hypnotherapist prepare for a court appearance? How does he or she handle direct and cross-examination? Written primarily for clinicians who practice hypnotherapy, Trance on Trial offers a comprehensive, authoritative evaluation of the use of hypnosis in the courts, as well as practical strategies for maximizing the legal rights of clients while minimizing the liabilities of practitioners. Illustrated with numerous case examples, enlivened by simulated direct and cross-examination exchanges, and extensively referenced to the legal and psychiatric literature, Trance on Trial is an invaluable resource.

Logical Empiricism as Scientific Philosophy

Logical Empiricism as Scientific Philosophy

This Element offers a new account of the philosophical significance of logical empiricism that relies on the past forty years of literature reassessing the project. It argues that while logical empiricism was committed to empiricism and did become tied to the trajectory of analytic philosophy, neither empiricism nor logical analysis per se was the deepest philosophical commitment of logical empiricism. That commitment was, rather, securing the scientific status of philosophy, bringing philosophy into a scientific conception of the world.

Any alteration of the natural processes occurring on a piece of land will have expected as well as unanticipated effects, and those effects have little regard for arbitrary human boundaries. Consequently, it is not enough for land managers to consider only how they might maintain the parcels for which they are responsible; they must also anticipate how changes to neighboring lands might impact their properties. Land Use Scenarios: Environmental Consequences of Development demonstrates how the success of local decision making is largely determined by factors that are difficult to control or forecast. It shows the importance of geographic vulnerability analysis, which takes into consideration possible scenarios about how, where, and when future patterns of land use might develop. It points to the consideration of critical uncertainties—those aspects of the future, that while difficult to predict, may have a profound impact on pending decisions. Detailing research supported by the United States Marine Corps, the text presents a study of the region of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and Air Station Miramar in California. While this area remains largely un-built, but extensively used, ongoing regional growth is having dramatic impact on the land and must be factored into any decision making. This research— Provides a better understanding of the potential consequences of urban development on native flora and fauna Describes theoretical concerns prompted by scenario-based projections Gives an overview of the history of scenario-based techniques for urban and regional planning Helps define measures for maintaining undeveloped lands in rapidly developing areasIn publishing this research, the investigators provide information regarding issues of urban development and possible environmental consequences to stakeholders and jurisdictions whose actions may influence the future of the region. More broadly, the book will aid managers and stakeholders from other areas to engage spatial contingencies toward the goal of developing more resilient landscapes.

The Two Hands of God: The Myths of Polarity

""The Two Hands of God: The Myths of Polarity"" is a thought-provoking book written by Alan W. Watts. In this book, Watts explores the concept of polarity and how it has been depicted in various myths and religions throughout history. He delves into the idea that the universe is made up of opposing forces, such as light and dark, good and evil, and male and female. Watts argues that these opposing forces are not truly separate, but rather two sides of the same coin, and that they are necessary for balance and harmony in the world.Throughout the book, Watts draws on examples from a wide range of cultures and traditions, including Christianity, Taoism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. He examines the myths and stories associated with these religions and shows how they all contain elements of polarity. He also discusses the ways in which individuals can use this understanding of polarity to achieve greater balance and harmony in their own lives.Overall, ""The Two Hands of God: The Myths of Polarity"" is a fascinating exploration of a complex and nuanced concept. It is a must-read for anyone interested in mythology, religion, or spirituality, and offers valuable insights for anyone seeking to better understand themselves and their place in the world. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
